DESCRIPTION:Awake\, Rise\, Act: Contemporary Broadsides \nAn exhibition of Fine Art prints made to resemble 18th century broadsides created for the semiquincentennial celebration of Concord Massachusetts. They are on view at the Wright Tavern\, an historic building that played a role in the founding of the United States and the place where the Provincial Congress was planned. Nineteen artists created prints at Shepherd & Maudsleigh Studio in West Newton\, a large space where artists and printmakers can create their work in a community environment. The Provincial Congress organized a network of intelligence to monitor the British Army and the military supplies throughout the province. Aware of the rebel operations\, the British Army conducted military intelligence missions into the Massachusetts countryside. These efforts would see moments of intrigue\, strife\, and unexpected voices playing an important role in what was to come. Join us at the Wright Tavern on Saturday\, March 22\, 2025 for a living history event that examines the diverse experiences of those involved in this crucial period leading up to the outbreak of war. \nSchedule of Events:\n10:00 a.m. – Site Opens\nExplore the Wright Tavern and learn about the various groups involved in intelligence networks in Massachusetts in the Spring of 1775. Meet Park Rangers and living history volunteers who examine the methods\, experiences\, and challenges of people navigating this difficult period in history. \n11:00 a.m. – “For the information of Gen. Gage:” The British Spy mission to Concord\nJoin us for an interactive program that puts you in the position of a citizen of Concord in March of 1775 when two British Army spies arrived in town. DESCRIPTION:The 2024 Massachusetts Provincial Congress\n“Exploring Democracy – Our Rights and Our Responsibilities”\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOctober 11\, 2024\n9:30am – 4:30pm\nFirst Parish in Concord and The Wright Tavern\n*Register here to attend* \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn October 1774\, the political conflict between Great Britain and Massachusetts reached a crisis. Parliament enacted the “Intolerable Acts” to punish the province for the Tea Party\, and they revoked the charter of 1691 by which the popularly elected House of Representatives joined with the Council and Crown-appointed Governor to rule the Bay Colony. In the ensuing furor\, county conventions protested the changes; crowds closed courts\, Patriots took over county militias\, and encouraged towns to resist the new regime of the General Court. Royal Governor Thomas Gage called the Court to meet in Salem\, but the Assembly never convened. \nAlthough Gage canceled the session\, the representatives decided to meet behind closed and locked doors and reorganize as the Massachusetts Provincial Congress. Its first session opened a week later\, on October 11th\, in Concord\, safe from the control of British authorities. The gathering was a landmark in the history of self-government.  The Congress set the colony on a collision course with Britain and an eventual road to independence.  Even as it proclaimed loyalty to the Crown\, the Congress mobilized the province in a struggle to reclaim the rights and liberties Massachusetts had enjoyed. Without declaring independence\, the popularly elected body seized the reins of power\, charted a new future for Massachusetts\, and set a model of self-government. \nOctober 11\, 2024\, marks the 250th Anniversary of the Massachusetts Provincial Congress. To commemorate this occasion and honor our forebearers\, the Wright Tavern Legacy Trust is sponsoring a gathering in Concord’s First Parish Meetinghouse and the Wright Tavern next door\, where the delegates to the Congress met. This will be a day-long\, engaging program. With noted historians to guide us\, we will return to this crucial moment in the history of the American Revolution and ask what we can learn from the past. With state legislators joining us\, we will examine the state of democratic governance in Massachusetts and the United States today. DESCRIPTION:  Why are there sheep at Ag Day in Concord?  They are part of The Concord 250th plan\, which celebrates this momentous year by adding “history” to every event.\nJoin spinners and sheep on the grounds of the Wright Tavern on Saturday\, September 7\, from 10 to 2.  We will honor the vital role of women leading up to the American Revolution.  Following the Sugar Act\, the Stamp Act\, and the Townsend  Act\,  women in the American colonies formed the Daughters of Liberty to support a boycott of goods arriving from England.  The Daughters opposed drinking British-imported tea and purchasing imported fabrics.  They wove and wore homespun clothes and held public events\, “Spinning Bees” to teach other women how to spin thread from flax and wool.  They melted metal for bullets and sewed uniforms for the American militia. \n \nDuring Ag Day\, spinners will demonstrate their craft near Main Street beside the Wright Tavern. Kids may feed the sheep from Lucky Lane Farm in Lincoln. *These sheep are the smallest breed in America (Ouessant) and are sweet to see no matter what your age!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOriginal Concord 250 ceramic mugs and plates by Newbury Court Potters will be for sale to benefit the Concord Carlisle Community Chest.\n

DESCRIPTION:Lafayette is Coming to Concord  \nOn September 2\, 2024\, Concord\, Lexington\, Boston\, and other towns will celebrate the 200th Anniversary of Lafayette’s Farewell Tour of America. Here is a description of the purpose and plans for this opportunity to recognize this major event as an integral part of the 250th celebrations of the start of the American War for Independence. \nWhy This Is Important  \nIn 1824\, President James Monroe invited General Lafayette of France to come to America and honor those who fought for and supported the War for Independence. France’s role was critical to George Washington and the American forces in the defeat of the British. Without their aid\, it is unlikely we would have prevailed. Like now\, those times were full of serious political polarization\, and President Monroe wanted Lafayette to bring unity through our recognition and appreciation of the French’s contributions. \nThis will also be an opportunity to broaden historical perceptions of the Revolution to be more inclusive of the contributions of African Americans\, women\, immigrants\, and indigenous peoples. This commemorative event gives us the impetus for reflection and discussion of Concord’s legacy and future. According to historian David Hackett Fischer\, “With much encouragement from his friend the Marquis de Lafayette\, Washington’s thinking on race and slavery changed.” Lafayette had a profound impact on the early development of the United States. \nOverview of Lafayette’s Farewell Tour in 2024 – September 2 from 3:00 – 5:00 PM. The American Friends of Lafayette (AFL) is planning and organizing this twenty-five-day (August 16 – September 9) tour\, including reenactors and events in over 40 towns. Each town\, including Concord\, will create its own ceremonies and coordinate the entry and exit of Lafayette’s entourage. \nConcord’s visit will be on Monday\, September 2\, 2024\, (Labor Day Holiday) from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm. Lafayette will be arriving from Lexington. Our program for this day will include: \n\nConcord’s militia will greet him and march with him to First Parish/Wright Tavern.\nTents and a welcoming party will greet Lafayette with a welcome statement from Samuel Hoar\, descendent of the original greeter of Lafayette to Concord.\nWe will have a wreath-laying ceremony by the Daughters of the American Revolution\nPresentations in First Parish will reflect Lafayette vision and values for America:\n\nRobert A. Meet the Lafayette reenactor on the lawn of First Parish in Concord this Labor Day afternoon on the very site and day he came to Concord in 1824. Hear the fife and drum of the Concord militia as “Lafayette” arrives in a carriage and is greeted at the tent before moving inside for a program in the First Parish sanctuary with remarks by historians and town leaders. Organized by the Wright Tavern and the Racial Justice Affinity Group of First Parish\, the program will feature historian Robert Gross\, Robbins House Executive Director Jen Turner\, Concord Prison Outreach Director Sam Williams\, and Gospel Choir Director at First Parish Anderson Manuel.  A French-themed reception will follow at the Wright Tavern.
