SUMMARY:A Celebration Heard ‘Round the World – An Exhibition presented by the William Munroe Special Collections
DESCRIPTION:The exhibition features selections from the William Munroe Special Collections and the Town Archives\, including art\, photographs\, broadsides\, Town records\, and ephemera that explore how Concordians have celebrated the anniversary of the Battle of Concord\, or the “Concord Fight\,” on April 19\, 1775. Learn how celebrations have combined public interest and trends with historical commemoration and how these events have evolved. While mainstay traditions like parades\, invited speakers\, balls\, and re-enactments have prevailed and changed\, new traditions have also been introduced\, reflecting the community’s diverse interests. \nIn addition\, on the First Floor of the Main Library\, selections from the Town Archives and the William Munroe Special Collections offer a rich cache of manuscript and printed primary source materials providing insight into events leading up to\, on\, and following April 19\, 1775. Many of these documents offer small glimpses into the Concord Fight’s human impact and the American Revolution’s beginnings. Using these items\, we highlight the actions of soldiers\, Patriots of Color\, and women to tell a more complete story about the Concord Fight and the people who lived it.

DESCRIPTION:Exhibition: April 14 – June 14\, 2025 \nOpening Reception  April 14\, 6PM \n  \nThe Umbrella Arts Center in historic Concord Center will commemorate the semiquincentennial of the American Revolution and “the shot heard round the world” with an ambitious outdoor/indoor public and gallery art exhibition\, Weaving an Address\, curated by artist Marla McLeod. \n  \nFor the first time\, Weaving an Address combines The Umbrella’s popular Art Ramble public art installation\, on view April 15 through October 7 at Brister’s Hill in nearby Walden Woods\, with an indoor exhibition on view April 14 through June 14 in The Umbrella’s Allie Kussin Gallery. The exhibition features site-specific work by eight prominent Black artists combining sculpture\, fiber art\, installation and live performance inspired by little-known experiences of historical Black inhabitants of Concord and its Walden Woods. \n  \nFeatured artists in the exhibition are Ifé Franklin\, Stephen Hamilton\, Whitney Harris\, Ekua Holmes\, Perla Mabel\, Marla McLeod\, Kimberly Love Radcliffe\, and Anthony Peyton Young. \n  \nOutdoors\, large-scale work will be installed on Brister’s Hill\, named for Brister Freeman\, an enslaved man who won his freedom by serving in the Revolutionary War and then bought the property and lived there along with other formerly enslaved.Indoors at The Umbrella\, inter-related fiber artworks will weave narratives from fragmented pasts to offer a vision of how history shapes the present and influences the future. \n  \nSupporting community activities include an opening reception on April 14\, monthly curator talks\, a processional with artist Ifé Franklin\, and participation in the town-wide Revolutionary Concordians Trading Card program. \n  \nThis exhibition is presented as part of the Concord250 commemoration\, in partnership with The Walden Woods Project and The Robbins House\, in association with Gather 2025\, a month-long exploration and celebration of fiber and textile art in Greater Boston\, and with permission of Concord Natural Resources Division. \n  \nSee https://TheUmbrellaArts.org/Weaving for more information about special engagements\, wayfinding\, artist bios\, and background to the exhibition. \n  \nACCESS: The Umbrella is wheelchair accessible\, with ADA parking and marked all-gender bathrooms available. DESCRIPTION:Concord 250: Monumental (Re)Make \n\nCelebrate the 250th birthday of the battles of Concord and Lexington by helping us recreate Daniel Chester French’s iconic statue The Minute Man through collaborative 3D printing! \n\n\n\n \nWhat is this?\nThe Workshop is collaborating with local artist and author Dr. Linda Booth Sweeney to reimagine and reproduce a scale model of Daniel Chester French’s iconic statue The Minute Man through a collaborative 3D printing process! There are two ways to participate: \n#1 Print a Part.\nMakers of all ages are invited to visit the Workshop any time during regular Open Maker Hours to 3D print a part (or several!) of The Minute Man! Just follow the instructions to reserve a 3D printer and ask for a design file when you arrive! The Minute Man is a great project for beginners\, but if you’re new to our machines\, we strongly recommend reviewing our instructional materials before your visit \n#2 Build Together.\nMakers of all ages can also attend one of our interactive building sessions throughout the year to learn more about The Minute Man and 3D modeling and printing from Workshop staff and local artist and author Dr. Linda Booth Sweeney\, while assembling the pieces printed by our neighbors! Find upcoming sessions on the Workshop Calendar! \nWhere will the final project be displayed?\nNo matter how you choose to participate\, all contributors will have the opportunity to add their name to our makers record to be displayed alongside the completed project at the Library in 2025. \nIsn’t that a lot of plastic?\nYes\, it is! As a Certified Sustainable Library\, we take the environmental impact of a project like this very seriously. All components of the (Re)Make will be composed of PLA\, a vegetable-based plastic. The Library has secured a speciality recycling vendor to process the statue and any waste materials in the event that the statue must be disposed of. \nMy school/company/non-profit organization has a 3D printer – can we help?\nYes! Through a rich array of objects\, from paintings\, prints\, and political cartoons to historic clothing\, textiles\, furniture\, and ceramics\, as well as film and multimedia installations\, Whose Revolution provides a vivid and tangible sense of what it was like to live through this dramatic period of mounting tension and crisis and the significance of this history today. \nFeatured objects include a lavish British Spitalfields silk gown and other historic textiles illuminating the experiences of women and children\, a media installation exploring the lives of free and enslaved Black people in Concord\, a new commissioned wampum choker by Elizabeth James-Perry (Aquinnah Wampanoag)\, and a film with Elizabeth Solomon (Massachusett) reflecting on the meaning of the American Revolution within Indigenous communities in Massachusetts. Whose Revolution will also feature portraits by John Singleton Copley\, a first printing of Phillis Wheatley’s Poems on Various Subjects\, ceramics\, and prints\, on loan for the special exhibition. \n\nGet Tickets

SUMMARY:Patriots of Color Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:Saturdays\, 1:30pm Tours \nMarch 22\, 2025 – June 30\, 2025 \nBetween twenty and forty colonists who fought along the Battle Road on April 19\, 1775\, were of African descent or Indigenous people. Although excluded from required militia service prior to the war\, these individuals of color were the first of many to take up arms between 1775 and 1783. \nBy the end of the conflict\, an estimated 5\,500 African and Indigenous  men served on the colonial side. Unfortunately\, systemic racism and historical bias have erased or buried many records of Black and Indigenous people who played a prominent role in the founding of the United States. In this 90 minute walking tour we will examine the known history and stories of these Patriots of Color who fought for freedom locally both during the American Revolution and beyond. Minuteman National Park\, Robbins House and Concord Visitors Center staff will lead this tour examining the incredible stories of individuals who risked everything during their struggle for liberty\, equality\, and freedom for all.\n\nTour meets at the North Bridge Lower Lot.  All ages are welcome. SUMMARY:Thoreau's Birthplace - Free House Tours
DESCRIPTION:Take an inside look at the restored 1730s house listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the Wheeler-Minot Farmhouse/Henry David Thoreau Birth House. Locally\, it is also known as “Thoreau Farm.” Tour includes the lovingly restored second-floor room where Henry David Thoreau was born in 1817. Visits to the house are by guided tour only. Come learn about the birthplace of Henry David Thoreau and consider lessons about living deliberately that we can learn from his legacy. \nTours take place at 11am\, 1pm\, and 3pm. No registration required. \n  \nHouse Tours: \nMay to October\nSaturdays\, Sundays & Mondays\n11:00 am\, 1:00 pm & 3:00 pm \nAdmission is free. Suggested Donation $5/person  \nYou do not need to take a tour to visit the grounds. \nYou may also arrange a special tour at another time by contacting us at info@thoreaufarm.org. \n
