DESCRIPTION:Meriam’s Corner Exercise\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n2024 Event\nOpen House at Meriam’s Corner\nApril 6\, 2024\nNathan Meriam House\n11:00 am – 2:00 pm \n\nVisit the Nathan Meriam witness house and talk with costumed park staff about the Meriam family and the importance of the crossroad near their home on April 19\, 1775. In the early afternoon of that fateful day\, Militia soldiers arriving from Reading\, Chelmsford\, and Billerica attacked retreating British soldiers near this home. From Meriam’s Corner to Charlestown the fighting raged continuously for 8 hours and roughly 16 miles. Today\, this important home marks the beginning of the “Battle Road.”\nParking:\nMeriam’s Corner Parking Lot: 751 Lexington Road\, Concord\, MA.\nOverflow parking available on the day of the event.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHistory\nThis commemoration marks the assembly and actions of militia and minuteman units that arrived at Meriam’s Corner during the British retreat from Concord\, April 19th\, 1775. After the Regulars’ withdrawal from the North Bridge where they had engaged with more than 400 Minutemen\, they began a retreat back to Boston. By the time the Regulars arrived at this spot at half past noon\, there were reported to be about 1\,100 Minutemen in the area from more than a dozen towns. A challenge by the Regulars started a classic guerilla action\, which continued for many hours as the outnumbered British retreated towards Boston. At least two British privates were killed and several others wounded here during that initial exchange. By the time the day was over\, 49 Colonials had died\, 73 British troops were killed\, plus 173 wounded and missing. \nThus began a war that would not end until Yorktown\, more than 6 long years later\, and thus our nation was born.

DESCRIPTION:April 11 – June 8\,  2024 \nCurators: Linda Booth Sweeney and Stephanie Marlin-Curiel  \nOpening Reception\, Mixer and Panel Discussion: April 11\, 5-7PM \nYouth Forward Climate Action Day\, April 20\, 1-5PM \n  \nOn view at The Umbrella Arts Center April 11 – June 8\, “TAPPED IN: Moving Hearts and Minds Through Arts and Science” is an innovative art installation at the intersection of climate communications\, art\, and science that combines outdoor public art with an indoor educational gallery display.  Inspired by the concept of ‘edges’ in ecosystems\, the exhibition brings together ten pairs of well-regarded artists and climate scientists/activists to collaboratively  visualize fresh perspectives on climate change\, CO2 mitigation and action.  \n  \nArtists and Scientists: Adria Arch and  Sara Seager\, Deputy Science Director of the MIT-led NASA mission\, TESS; Freedom Baird and Daniella Malin\, Senior Program Director\, Agriculture & Climate\, Sustainable Food Lab; Lisa Barthelson and Juliana Birnbaum\, Senior Editor and Program Director\, Project Regeneration; Casey Figueroa and Terrius Harris\, Obama Scholar\, Artist\, Advocate\, Educator and Strategist on Indigenous\, Climate and Economic Issues; Raquel Fornasaro and Professor John Sterman\, Director MIT Sloan Sustainability Initiative; Mags Harries and Nadia Szeinbaum\, Senior Scientist\, Beyond Meat; Michelle Lougee and William Moomaw\, Emeritus Professor of International Environmental Policy\, Tufts University; Ilana Manolson and Janine Benyus\, Co-Founder\, Biomimicry Institute; Victor Pacheco and Paul Krishen\, Professor\, School for the Environment Research Director\, Stone Living Lab\, University of Massachusetts\, Boston; and Nancy Selvage and Josh Goldman\, Project Leader\, Greener Grazing. \n  \nCentral to the inspiration for this exhibit is the Climate Bathtub analogy\, which makes complex concepts of greenhouse gas pollutants (faucet outflow)\, atmospheric CO2 concentration (tub)\, and climate change mitigation (drain) accessible to individuals of all ages. Outdoors interpretative sculptures reflecting the bathtub metaphor’s systems dynamics will express an art/science collaborative vision for our climate future. \n  \nThe Umbrella is ADA accessible\, and provides free parking and free admission to its visual arts galleries. \n  \nRELATED ACTIVITIES \n  \nThursday\, April 11\, 5-7:30PM \nOpening reception and environmental mixer\, artist-scientist panel discussion\, and remarks by public officials and the curators. \n  \nSaturday\, April 20\, 1-5PM \nYouth Forward Climate Action Day\, featuring Mend-a-thon\, Youth-led guided tours\, Free Family Fun Activity\, “Heartbeat Space” projection installation by Casey Figueroa\, Eco Slow Fashion Show\, and other activities. SUMMARY:From Pasadena to Concord: Telling The Whole Story
DESCRIPTION:Pasadena city leader Veronica Jones comes to speak in Concord  about  their work honoring Black history. 4/13. 2pm at CFPL\nSponsored by Robbins House\, Concord 250 and Special Collections\n\n\n\nFor 129 years\, Black educator and activist Ellen Garrison lay unsung and forgotten in an unmarked grave in Altadena\, California’s Mountain View Cemetery. \nEllen Garrison\, native daughter of Concord\, was the granddaughter of a freedman who fought in the Revolutionary War and spent years traveling alone through the South to teach formerly enslaved people how to read and write\, protected only by a paper “passport” to show she was a free person. \nThe residents of Altadena knew little of this hidden history\, but they were willing to learn\, listen\, and honor this heroine in their midst. Veronica Jones\, Vice Chair of the Town Council\, decided to act. Ms. Jones has a deep passion for uncovering hidden histories. Through her work with the Altadena Historical Society\, she spearheaded the placement of headstones on the graves of Ellen Garrison\, her husband\, and her sister. Additionally\, two scholarships are awarded to local Altadena students in memory of Ellen Garrison. Thanks to the Altadena Historical Society and Veronica Jones\, Ellen Garrison is celebrated every year on Juneteenth\, honoring the hidden histories of Altadena. \nThis process her community has gone through creates lasting change and deeper inclusion for all segments of her community. Veronica will share their journey and lessons learned and discuss how this work can impact us all\, no matter where we live. \nVeronica Jones is a retired life-long resident of Altadena\, California with vast experience in community development. She has worked extensively on public safety\, infrastructure improvements\, community-police relations\, economic development\, diversity and inclusion\, and re-establishing relationships with local\, state\, and federal government.
