SUMMARY:Juneteenth Celebration!
DESCRIPTION:Juneteenth Celebration!\n \nMonday\, June 19 from 12 to 4 pm \n\n\n9 am\nMonument Square Town Flag Pole\nCeremony Honoring the Raising  of the Juneteenth Flag\nAll are welcome!\n\n10 am\nConcord Museum\nJuneteenth Family Program\n  \n\n11 am\nRobbins House Open for Tours\n\n12 noon to 4 pm\nRobbins House Lawn\nTownwide Celebration and Gathering\n\n10 a.m.\nConcord Visitors Center\nAfrican Americans of Concord Walking Tour\n\n\nJoin the Town of Concord for its first-ever town-wide celebration of Juneteenth in collaboration with Concord Recreation and The Robbins House!\n\nJuneteenth is a federal holiday in the United States commemorating the emancipation of enslaved African Americans and was first recognized as a federal holiday in 2021\, with the signing of the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act into law.\n \nAfter the Union Army captured New Orleans in 1862\, enslavers in Confederate states migrated to Texas with more than 150\,000 enslaved Black persons.  For 3 years\, even after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation\, enslaved Black Americans in Texas remained in bondage\, immorally and illegally deprived of their freedom and basic dignity.  On June 19\, 1865 — over 2 years after President Lincoln declared all enslaved persons free — Major General Gordon Granger and Union Army troops marched to Galveston\, Texas\, to enforce the Emancipation Proclamation and free the last enslaved Black Americans in Texas.\n Those who were freed from bondage celebrated their long-overdue emancipation on June 19.  We commemorate Juneteenth:  a chance to celebrate human freedom\, reflect on the grievous and ongoing legacy of slavery\, and rededicate ourselves to deliver the full promise of America to every American.
