SUMMARY:The Counter at The Umbrella Arts Center
DESCRIPTION:The Umbrella Arts Center proudly presents the Boston-area premiere of The Counter\, a riveting new play by acclaimed playwright Meghan Kennedy. This production will run Sep 26 – Nov 9\, 2025\, transforming the intimate Black Box space into a prism for a surprising\, funny and moving reflection on the everyday connections that can change our lives. \n  \nThe play is helmed by emerging director Alex Lonati in her Umbrella Stage debut\, and features Norton Award-nominated “ranney”* as Paul\, Margaret Clark as Katie\, and Norton and IRNE Award-winner Maureen Keiller* as Peg. \n  \nThis award-winning play follows the unlikely connection between Paul\, a retired firefighter who goes every morning to the same small town diner\, and Katie\, who’s always there to pour the coffee. After many months of small talk across the counter\, the sharing of one secret grows into a deeply meaningful\, life-affirming friendship—shocking both Paul and Katie into embracing the hopes and joys born of basic human connection. \n  \nThrough sharp dialogue and unexpected humor\, The Counter explores “secrets and grief and escape\, [running] away and starting again\, and most crucially standing in front of a suddenly opened door.” (New York Stage Review) \n  \n“I’m excited that Boston audiences will have an opportunity to experience The Counter for the first time\,” says Performing Arts Director Brian Boruta. “It struck me as a thrilling surprise – a reminder that the most unlikely connections found in our everyday lives can have a monumental impact.” \n  \nOriginally commissioned by Roundabout Theater\, it was called “an intensely provocative new American play” (New York Stage Review) by Kennedy\, whose other plays include Napoli\, Brooklyn; Too Much\, Too Much\, Too Many; and Light. Her work has been produced around the U.S.\, U.K.\, Ireland and Sweden\, developed or presented by such prominent institutions as the National Theatre of London\, The Atlantic Theater Company\, Williamstown Theatre Festival\, and Ars Nova. \n  \n*Indicates a member of Actor’s Equity Association.

SUMMARY:Transformed by Revolution at the Concord Museum
DESCRIPTION:Join Curator talks at 11:00 am and 2:00 pm on October 3. Free with admission.  \nWhile Concord’s role in the start of the American Revolution is widely recognized\, less well known are the continued experiences of disruption and turmoil in Concord throughout the war. What was it like to be part of this war-time community? Who participated in this fight for Independence and what did freedom and Independence mean to different people? When the war ended\, how did local communities develop as part of a fragile new nation?  \nThrough eyewitness historical objects\, artworks\, and documents\, Transformed by Revolution explores what it was like to be part of this war-time community that hosted Harvard College and became a hub of military supplies for the army in Boston. The exhibition also considers who participated in this fight for Independence and the meanings of freedom for women\, the Black community\, and sovereign Indigenous nations. These stories are traced through the end of the war and into the years of the early Republic to explore shifting ideas about community\, belonging\, and what it meant to be part of the new nation.

SUMMARY:Fowler Author Talk: Ruth Madison
DESCRIPTION:Join local author Ruth Madison to celebrate her newest novel\, Waiting to Break. This deeply emotional contemporary romance explores themes of community\, grief\, family expectations\, the dignity of choice\, and what it means to be truly seen. Ruth will read from her novel\, answer audience questions\, and sign books. Copies of the book will be available for purchase for $15. \nAbout the book: \nThe accident took his voice\, but she heard him anyway. \nFormer rockstar Gabe Whitlock has been hidden away in a long-term care facility ever since an on-stage accident stole his music\, his movement\, and even his voice. No one’s thought about him in years. \nAnna Lin is still raw from losing her mother and battling the panic attacks that derailed her college career. Living with her father again feels like a step backward—until he gets her a job as the activities coordinator at Rosehaven. What she doesn’t expect is to find Gabe Whitlock\, former frontman and guitarist of Pressure Front\, quietly wasting away in a nursing home in Western Massachusetts. Drawn together by music and art\, Anna and Gabe forge an unlikely bond. But when Gabe’s sister schemes to seize control of his estate\, Anna and a ragtag band of residents push back. Their defiance threatens to cost Anna the fragile new life she’s building—and Gabe the last shreds of independence he has left. \nWaiting to Break is an emotionally powerful\, deeply romantic journey about finding your voice after losing everything\, the dignity of choosing who you love\, and the courage it takes to find your own path in life. \nFor fans of soulful\, emotionally charged romance novels and authors like Jojo Moyes\, Jodi Picoult\, and Nicholas Sparks. \nEvent is free but please register at: https://concordlibrary.assabetinteractive.com/calendar/fowler-author-talk-ruth-madison-adults/

From Friday\, October 10 through Sunday\, November 23\, 2025\, audiences will be invited into the creative crucible of a composer on the brink of his 30th birthday\, facing the crossroads of love\, ambition\, and artistic purpose. \nBefore Rent\, there was Tick\, Tick… BOOM!. This autobiographical musical by Jonathan Larson\, the Pulitzer Prize- and Tony Award-winning composer of Rent\, is the story of a composer and the sacrifices that he made to achieve his big break in theater. Talk Backs are scheduled following the Oct 18 and Nov 6 performances. \nThe performance will run in rotation with The Umbrella’s production of the heartfelt play The Counter\, a Boston-area premiere\, in the Black Box Theater from Sep 26 through Nov 9. \n** Indicates a member of Stage Directors And Choreographers Society
