DESCRIPTION:Join us on Thursday April 3rd at 5:30pm for the opening reception of our upcoming exhibition\, “ Liberation Textiles: Our Social Fabric\, ” curated by Elizabeth Thach and Camilø Álvårez. \nThe show is centered around themes of individual freedom and primarily features fiber-based visual art. Programming for the exhibition also includes a Curators Tour on Thursday April 3rd at 5pm\, as well as Artist Demos with some of the exhibition’s featured artists. The show is on view April 3 – May 11\, 2025. \n\n\n\nCurators Tour Thursday April 3rd at 5pm (opening reception starts at 5:30pm that evening)\nArtist Demo: A Sense of Touch – Tapestry Weaving with Sam Fields Wednesday\, April 16th\, 10:30am-12pm\nThe show is centered around themes of individual freedom and is scheduled to coincide with the town’s celebration of Patriots Day. It will primarily feature fiber-based visual art. To give you a sense of the creative direction\, here’s an excerpt from what the curator has written about the show:\n\n\n“When we talk about ‘social fabric’ the metaphor is apt because of the various ways that individual lives overlap [like threads] and are supported by other lives to create a unified garment… We participate in elections\, but we also participate in economic systems\, familial networks\, and larger social communities. Communal life is always a negotiation between individual freedom and the needs of the social fabric that supports and makes individual freedom possible… Making art is one of the purest expressions of personal freedom that the individual can participate in\, but the work that artists make as individuals is influenced by artists’ economic\, cultural\, and communal realities… Communities support and participate in the individual’s freedom when they view the art that individuals make. It is a critical mistake to think that art can exist in a vacuum\, or that individuals can be free without the supports and infrastructure of a healthy community.”

SUMMARY:A Celebration Heard ‘Round the World – An Exhibition presented by the William Munroe Special Collections
DESCRIPTION:The exhibition features selections from the William Munroe Special Collections and the Town Archives\, including art\, photographs\, broadsides\, Town records\, and ephemera that explore how Concordians have celebrated the anniversary of the Battle of Concord\, or the “Concord Fight\,” on April 19\, 1775. Learn how celebrations have combined public interest and trends with historical commemoration and how these events have evolved. While mainstay traditions like parades\, invited speakers\, balls\, and re-enactments have prevailed and changed\, new traditions have also been introduced\, reflecting the community’s diverse interests. \nIn addition\, on the First Floor of the Main Library\, selections from the Town Archives and the William Munroe Special Collections offer a rich cache of manuscript and printed primary source materials providing insight into events leading up to\, on\, and following April 19\, 1775. Many of these documents offer small glimpses into the Concord Fight’s human impact and the American Revolution’s beginnings. Using these items\, we highlight the actions of soldiers\, Patriots of Color\, and women to tell a more complete story about the Concord Fight and the people who lived it.

DESCRIPTION:Exhibition: April 14 – June 14\, 2025 \nOpening Reception  April 14\, 6PM \n  \nThe Umbrella Arts Center in historic Concord Center will commemorate the semiquincentennial of the American Revolution and “the shot heard round the world” with an ambitious outdoor/indoor public and gallery art exhibition\, Weaving an Address\, curated by artist Marla McLeod. \n  \nFor the first time\, Weaving an Address combines The Umbrella’s popular Art Ramble public art installation\, on view April 15 through October 7 at Brister’s Hill in nearby Walden Woods\, with an indoor exhibition on view April 14 through June 14 in The Umbrella’s Allie Kussin Gallery. The exhibition features site-specific work by eight prominent Black artists combining sculpture\, fiber art\, installation and live performance inspired by little-known experiences of historical Black inhabitants of Concord and its Walden Woods. \n  \nFeatured artists in the exhibition are Ifé Franklin\, Stephen Hamilton\, Whitney Harris\, Ekua Holmes\, Perla Mabel\, Marla McLeod\, Kimberly Love Radcliffe\, and Anthony Peyton Young. \n  \nOutdoors\, large-scale work will be installed on Brister’s Hill\, named for Brister Freeman\, an enslaved man who won his freedom by serving in the Revolutionary War and then bought the property and lived there along with other formerly enslaved.Indoors at The Umbrella\, inter-related fiber artworks will weave narratives from fragmented pasts to offer a vision of how history shapes the present and influences the future. \n  \nSupporting community activities include an opening reception on April 14\, monthly curator talks\, a processional with artist Ifé Franklin\, and participation in the town-wide Revolutionary Concordians Trading Card program. \n  \nThis exhibition is presented as part of the Concord250 commemoration\, in partnership with The Walden Woods Project and The Robbins House\, in association with Gather 2025\, a month-long exploration and celebration of fiber and textile art in Greater Boston\, and with permission of Concord Natural Resources Division. \n  \nSee https://TheUmbrellaArts.org/Weaving for more information about special engagements\, wayfinding\, artist bios\, and background to the exhibition. \n  \nACCESS: The Umbrella is wheelchair accessible\, with ADA parking and marked all-gender bathrooms available. DESCRIPTION:Based on the beloved film that took home the Audience Award at The Sundance Film Festival\, The Umbrella Stage Company’s The Spitfire Grill follows the journey of Percy Talbott\, a spirited young woman who perseveres through personal hardship\, violence and incarceration to seek redemption in rural Wisconsin. But in the small town of Gilead\, she finds so much more – a second chance in a new community that she in turn transforms forever. \nThe production is helmed by award-winning Director/Choreographer Ilyse Robbins\, whose recent projects include last season’s Lizzie at The Umbrella\, Noises Off (Lyric Stage)\, and the Elliot Norton Award-winning All is Calm (Greater Boston Stage Company) among others. DESCRIPTION:Concord 250: Monumental (Re)Make \n\nCelebrate the 250th birthday of the battles of Concord and Lexington by helping us recreate Daniel Chester French’s iconic statue The Minute Man through collaborative 3D printing! \n\n\n\n \nWhat is this?\nThe Workshop is collaborating with local artist and author Dr. Linda Booth Sweeney to reimagine and reproduce a scale model of Daniel Chester French’s iconic statue The Minute Man through a collaborative 3D printing process! There are two ways to participate: \n#1 Print a Part.\nMakers of all ages are invited to visit the Workshop any time during regular Open Maker Hours to 3D print a part (or several!) of The Minute Man! Just follow the instructions to reserve a 3D printer and ask for a design file when you arrive! The Minute Man is a great project for beginners\, but if you’re new to our machines\, we strongly recommend reviewing our instructional materials before your visit \n#2 Build Together.\nMakers of all ages can also attend one of our interactive building sessions throughout the year to learn more about The Minute Man and 3D modeling and printing from Workshop staff and local artist and author Dr. Linda Booth Sweeney\, while assembling the pieces printed by our neighbors! Find upcoming sessions on the Workshop Calendar! \nWhere will the final project be displayed?\nNo matter how you choose to participate\, all contributors will have the opportunity to add their name to our makers record to be displayed alongside the completed project at the Library in 2025. \nIsn’t that a lot of plastic?\nYes\, it is! As a Certified Sustainable Library\, we take the environmental impact of a project like this very seriously. All components of the (Re)Make will be composed of PLA\, a vegetable-based plastic. The Library has secured a speciality recycling vendor to process the statue and any waste materials in the event that the statue must be disposed of. \nMy school/company/non-profit organization has a 3D printer – can we help?\nYes! Just complete our (Re)Make Partnership Interest Form\, and our staff will be happy to reach out with more information. \n\nThe original 3D scan of The Minute Man was generously donated by Todd Taylor of Minuteman Pewter. \n\n\n \n

Despite the title\, this multiple Tony Award winner is an irreverent satire\, whose sharp wit and non-stop humor presents the endlessly comic side of unchecked capitalism\, corporate greed and social irresponsibility. Urinetown takes a modern approach to examine the concept of a revolution with this road to freedom paved with catchy music\, flashy dance sequences and witty comedy. DESCRIPTION:The Sudbury-Assabet-Concord (SuAsCo) Wild and Scenic River Stewardship Council hosts University of Connecticut Professor Robert Thorson and a special presentation on the history of our rivers as part of Concord250. \nA frequent and engaging speaker in Concord\, Dr. Thorson is a Midwestern native\, turned Northwestern geologist\, turned Northeastern academic. He is a life member of the Thoreau Society\, serves on its board\, and is the author of The Guide to Walden Pond (2018)\, The Boatman (2017)\, Walden’s Shore (2014)\, Beyond Walden (2009)\, The Walden Experiments (in review at Princeton Press)\, and other works. Since 1984 he has been a Professor of Earth Sciences UConn where he commutes to work on a woodland path. \n  \nHis talk\, “Discord on the Concord: River Ice Breakup and the Revolution of the Seasons (Then and Now)” will feature his new analysis of historic seasonal changes in the rivers\, from spring ice breakup to their typical slow and dark path through our town in summer. Zooming out from the Old North Bridge\, Dr. Thorson will explain this river system’s unusual behavior\, how ice-jam flooding may have played a key role in bridge history between 1660 and 1793\, and how climate change in our 21st century is transforming the river we have known.

SUMMARY:Patriots of Color Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:Saturdays\, 1:30pm Tours \nMarch 22\, 2025 – June 30\, 2025 \nBetween twenty and forty colonists who fought along the Battle Road on April 19\, 1775\, were of African descent or Indigenous people. Although excluded from required militia service prior to the war\, these individuals of color were the first of many to take up arms between 1775 and 1783. \nBy the end of the conflict\, an estimated 5\,500 African and Indigenous  men served on the colonial side. Unfortunately\, systemic racism and historical bias have erased or buried many records of Black and Indigenous people who played a prominent role in the founding of the United States. In this 90 minute walking tour we will examine the known history and stories of these Patriots of Color who fought for freedom locally both during the American Revolution and beyond. Minuteman National Park\, Robbins House and Concord Visitors Center staff will lead this tour examining the incredible stories of individuals who risked everything during their struggle for liberty\, equality\, and freedom for all.\n\nTour meets at the North Bridge Lower Lot.  All ages are welcome. DESCRIPTION:The concert will feature two works commissioned by Concord Women’s Chorus:\n\n\nConcord Fragments\, a 2010 piece by renowned composer Libby Larsen\, three movements set to texts by three Concord women: Lidian Emerson\, from an 1843 letter to her husband\, Ralph Waldo Emerson; Martha Lawrence Prescott\, from an 1834 diary entry on her 18th birthday; and poet\, former CWC member and Concord resident Melissa Apperson\, from a poem inspired by Walden Pond. It is scored for women’s voices\, oboe\, clarinet\, and piano.\n\n\nGrown Wild (2021)\, by contemporary composer Melissa Dunphy\, based on a poem by Melissa Apperson\, scored for women’s voices\, piano\, and violin.\n\nWe have commissioned a new arrangement of The Concord Hymn\, using some or all of the instrumentalists from the program. This new arrangement will include audience singing participation\, emphasizing unity by creating a special version of The Concord Hymn that engages all of those gathered – audience and performer alike.

DESCRIPTION:A slightly different kind of revolution will take place in historic Concord with The Concord Players’ production of Urinetown the Musical! It’s a dark time in a dark city\, where a 20-year drought has led to severe water restrictions – including a ban on private toilets. Public pay toilets are controlled by the evil ‘Urine Good Company’\, which is gleefully gouging huge profits off a very basic human right: the privilege to pee. Despite the title\, this multiple Tony Award winner is an irreverent satire\, whose sharp wit and non-stop humor presents the endlessly comic side of unchecked capitalism\, corporate greed and social irresponsibility. Urinetown takes a modern approach to examine the concept of a revolution with this road to freedom paved with catchy music\, flashy dance sequences and witty comedy.
