SUMMARY:Harvesting the Spirit of Transcendentalism in Education Today
DESCRIPTION:  \nWednesday\, April 2\, 2025\, 6-7:45pm: Harvesting the Spirit of Transcendentalism in Education Today. \n  \nThough I do not believe that a plant will spring up where no seed has been\, I have great faith in a seed. Convince me that you have a seed there\, and I am prepared to expect wonders.\n— Henry David Thoreau \n  \nTranscendentalism broke upon the American scene in the 1830s and 40s\, led primarily by women and men in Concord\, Boston and beyond: Ralph Waldo Emerson\, Margaret Fuller\, Henry David Thoreau\, Elizabeth Palmer Peabody\, Bronson Alcott\, and others. Transcendentalism was a literary\, philosophical\, spiritual\, and reform-minded movement that challenged the materialism of the day and contributed to a range of radical reforms in religion\, education\, literature\, science\, and politics.  \n  \nAlthough they didn’t always agree with each other\, the Transcendentalists shared a passion for learning.  Their minds were curious\, rigorous\, far-reaching.  They wanted to grow spiritually and explore more deeply the world around them. There was a sense of shared excitement\, a drive to learn and grow. They wanted that for others as well and had some ideas about how to reshape education towards that end. \n  \nOur panel of modern-day educators will reflect on their own teaching experiences within the broader context of Transcendentalism and this desire to reshape education.  \n\nCan we find in our own schools some of the seeds they planted so long ago? \nAre Transcendentalist ideas on education still alive and well and growing today? \nWhere can we locate their educational philosophies — innovation\, active learning\, experiential education\, learning outdoors in nature\, student-centered learning\, new forms of adult education\, learning by doing — in the best practices of teachers today?\n\n  \nThese and other questions will be examined by our panelists:\n* Rev. Jenny Rankin\,\n* early childhood educator Betsy Siebert\,\n* Fenn teacher Elise Mott\, and\n* Concord-Carlisle High School/Rivers and Revolutions teacher Tracie Dunn. \n  \nThis event will take place in the Goodwin Forum at the Concord Free Public Library and is co-sponsored by Concord Children’s Center and the Transcendentalism Council. The evening is free of charge\, open to the public. In addition to honoring Concord Children’s Center’s 50th anniversary\, this event is part of the Concord250 Celebrations.

SUMMARY:Concord250 Exhibit: "Liberation Textiles: Our Social Fabric" at Concord Art
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Thursday April 3rd at 5:30pm for the opening reception of our upcoming exhibition\, “ Liberation Textiles: Our Social Fabric\, ” curated by Elizabeth Thach and Camilø Álvårez. \nThe show is centered around themes of individual freedom and primarily features fiber-based visual art. Programming for the exhibition also includes a Curators Tour on Thursday April 3rd at 5pm\, as well as Artist Demos with some of the exhibition’s featured artists. The show is on view April 3 – May 11\, 2025. \n\n\n\nCurators Tour Thursday April 3rd at 5pm (opening reception starts at 5:30pm that evening)\nArtist Demo: A Sense of Touch – Tapestry Weaving with Sam Fields Wednesday\, April 16th\, 10:30am-12pm\nThe show is centered around themes of individual freedom and is scheduled to coincide with the town’s celebration of Patriots Day. It will primarily feature fiber-based visual art. To give you a sense of the creative direction\, here’s an excerpt from what the curator has written about the show:\n\n\n“When we talk about ‘social fabric’ the metaphor is apt because of the various ways that individual lives overlap [like threads] and are supported by other lives to create a unified garment… We participate in elections\, but we also participate in economic systems\, familial networks\, and larger social communities. Communal life is always a negotiation between individual freedom and the needs of the social fabric that supports and makes individual freedom possible… Making art is one of the purest expressions of personal freedom that the individual can participate in\, but the work that artists make as individuals is influenced by artists’ economic\, cultural\, and communal realities… Communities support and participate in the individual’s freedom when they view the art that individuals make. It is a critical mistake to think that art can exist in a vacuum\, or that individuals can be free without the supports and infrastructure of a healthy community.”

SUMMARY:A Celebration Heard ‘Round the World – An Exhibition presented by the William Munroe Special Collections
DESCRIPTION:The exhibition features selections from the William Munroe Special Collections and the Town Archives\, including art\, photographs\, broadsides\, Town records\, and ephemera that explore how Concordians have celebrated the anniversary of the Battle of Concord\, or the “Concord Fight\,” on April 19\, 1775. Learn how celebrations have combined public interest and trends with historical commemoration and how these events have evolved. While mainstay traditions like parades\, invited speakers\, balls\, and re-enactments have prevailed and changed\, new traditions have also been introduced\, reflecting the community’s diverse interests. \nIn addition\, on the First Floor of the Main Library\, selections from the Town Archives and the William Munroe Special Collections offer a rich cache of manuscript and printed primary source materials providing insight into events leading up to\, on\, and following April 19\, 1775. Many of these documents offer small glimpses into the Concord Fight’s human impact and the American Revolution’s beginnings. Using these items\, we highlight the actions of soldiers\, Patriots of Color\, and women to tell a more complete story about the Concord Fight and the people who lived it.

SUMMARY:Patriots of Color Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:Saturdays\, 1:30pm Tours \nMarch 22\, 2025 – June 30\, 2025 \nBetween twenty and forty colonists who fought along the Battle Road on April 19\, 1775\, were of African descent or Indigenous people. Although excluded from required militia service prior to the war\, these individuals of color were the first of many to take up arms between 1775 and 1783. \nBy the end of the conflict\, an estimated 5\,500 African and Indigenous  men served on the colonial side. Unfortunately\, systemic racism and historical bias have erased or buried many records of Black and Indigenous people who played a prominent role in the founding of the United States. In this 90 minute walking tour we will examine the known history and stories of these Patriots of Color who fought for freedom locally both during the American Revolution and beyond. Minuteman National Park\, Robbins House and Concord Visitors Center staff will lead this tour examining the incredible stories of individuals who risked everything during their struggle for liberty\, equality\, and freedom for all.\n\nTour meets at the North Bridge Lower Lot.  All ages are welcome. Free from March 22-June 30\, 2005.\n\nThis walking tour  is  co-sponsored by Minuteman National Park\, The Robbins House\,  and The Concord Visitors Center as a Concord250 Event and is funded by the Massachusetts Office of Travel and Tourism.\n\nDonations in support of Black History Month in Concord may be made to The Robbins House here:  https://robbinshouse.org/donate/\n\nLearn More about Patriots of Color HERE\n\nhttps://robbinshouse.org/wp-content/uploads/PatriotsofColor-web.pdf\n\nhttps://www.nps.gov/mima/patriotsofcolor.htm

SUMMARY:Concord Band Spring Pops!
DESCRIPTION:Concord Band Performs Revolutionary Music\nThe Concord Band will present its spirited Spring Pops! concert on Friday\, April 11\, 2025\, at 51 Walden Performing Arts Center. The program commemorates the 250th anniversary of the Battles of Lexington and Concord as part of Concord250 festivities this year throughout the town of Concord. The concert features two compositions specially commissioned to honor the historic events of April 19\, 1775. \nNorth Bridge Portrait by noted composer and arranger Stephen Bulla was commissioned by the Concord Band. The composition builds on foreboding melodies leading to martial themes\, culminating in the fateful “shot heard ’round the world” at Concord’s North Bridge. The program also features Seeds of Revolution\, recently commissioned by the Lexington Bicentennial Band and composed by Daniel Lutz\, Director of University Bands at UMass Lowell. Seeds of Revolution depicts unfolding events and growing sentiments in Massachusetts leading up to April 19\, 1775. The performance continues with a march representing both historic towns\, aptly titled Concord and Lexington\, written by George Briggs\, former band director at Harvard University. The Concord250 program concludes with Concord\, composed for the U.S. Marine Band by Clare Grundman\, incorporating traditional tunes from colonial New England\, “The White Cockade\,” William Billings’ “America\,” and “Yankee Doodle.” Grundman noted that “Yankee Doodle” was a very popular tune for jigs and country dances\, but for Concord he used 7/8 time for an exuberant and clever ending. \nMusic Director James O’Dell has also selected twenty-first century music representing the digital revolution\, drawn from video games and superhero movies. Epic Gaming Themes by Paul Murtha elevates classic video game soundtracks to the stature of film scores. Video Games Live\, by Marty O’Donnell\, includes excerpts from a Hollywood concert phenomenon celebrating music from video games that toured around the world from 2005 through 2015. This composition will be conducted by Concord Band clarinetist Jim Dorney\, who studied conducting at SUNY Geneseo. The Concord Band will perform Soundtrack Highlights from Guardians of the Galaxy\, arranged for band by Michael Brown. The powerful soundtrack is based on popular hits of the 1960s and 1970s\, which the film’s protagonist plays to remind him of his former life on Earth. \nTickets to the Spring Pops concert are $25 for adults and $10 for children 12 and under. Admission includes open seating and complimentary refreshments. Tickets are available at ticketstage.com/concordband. Additional information about the Concord Band is available at www.concordband.org and on Facebook.

SUMMARY:Concord's Secret History. World Premiere
DESCRIPTION:The documentary reveals a long-suppressed secret\, set in Concord\, Massachusetts—the birthplace of the American Revolution\, where the first shots were fired on April 19\, 1775. The premiere will take place in Concord on April 12\, 2025\, followed by distribution to over 500 PBS member stations across the United States via PBS+. After the screening\, the filmmakers and historians involved in the project will participate in a facilitated talk-back\, providing an opportunity for deeper engagement and discussion.\nFree and open to all\n\nWatch the Trailer here\nAt the Umbrella Main Stage\n\n \n
