She is a Copley Master with the Copley Society of Artists and was honored with a Co/So Fellowship and Residency at the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown Massachusetts in 2023\, and was a 2021 Sam and Adele Golden Foundation for the Arts Resident. She was awarded a Mass Cultural Council Fellowship for her drawings and two ArtsWorcester Material Needs Grants. She has lead painting classes in Texas\, New Mexico\, Italy\, Greece\, and throughout New England. SUMMARY:Ways of My Ancestors – Imagery: Lighting the Path to Awareness
DESCRIPTION:“Ways of My Ancestors – Imagery: Lighting the Path to Awareness” features photographic work by Scott Strong Hawk Foster that celebrates the rich\, diverse\, and resilient cultures of the Native Peoples of the Northeastern Woodlands of North America. \nFoster is a Native American photographer and an enrolled member of Hassanamisco Nipmuc Band with proud Mohegan and Cherokee lineage. His work has been exhibited at the Danforth Museum\, Worcester Art Museum\, Boston City Hall\, and other venues. \nOn view through March 23 in The Umbrella’s Wedge Gallery\, this exhibition reflects Foster’s travels within his home state of Massachusetts and throughout the ancestral homelands of the Native American Peoples of New England.  While attending powwows\, cultural events\, workshops\, and Indigenous practices that span millennia\, his passion has become highlighting cultures and history of the Indigenous peoples that are still here and living amongst us. \nBoth the opening reception March 5\, 6PM and Artist Talk\, March 9\, 1-2PM are free and open to the public. \nThe exhibition runs concurrently with The Umbrella Stage Company’s Where We Belong by Mohegan playwright Madeline Sayet in The Umbrella’s Black Box theater. DESCRIPTION:Indigenous Theater-Maker’s Journey Grapples with Geographic Borders and\nCultural Legacies in a Universal Search for Belonging \nFebruary 28- March 23\, 2025 TICKETS \nUmbrella Arts\, Black Box Theater \nBy Madeline Sayet\, Directed by Tara Moses \nThe Umbrella Stage Company is thrilled to mount the New England Premiere of Mohegan theatre-maker Madeline Sayet’s ground-breaking one-woman show\, Where We Belong.\nPerformed for the first time by an artist other than Sayet herself\, it is helmed by fellow\nIndigenous director and playwright Tara Moses and stars GiGi Buddie. This brand new staging in\nConcord\, MA during the Semiquincentennial of the beginning of the American Revolution raises\ntimely questions of whose histories are told\, how\, by whom\, and in what language. \nWith great humor\, insight\, and imaginative storytelling\, the autobiographical play weaves\ntogether Indigenous history\, Shakespeare\, cultural legacy\, the power of language\, and legend. It\nrecounts Sayet’s 2015 journey to England to pursue a PhD in Shakespeare in the shadow of the\nBrexit vote. Moving between nations that have failed to reckon with their ongoing roles in\ncolonialism\, she grapples with what it means to remain or leave her own home as a Mohegan\,\nbut discovers comfort in mirroring the footsteps of her ancestors who traveled to England in the\n1700s. \n“Madeline’s story is uniquely personal\, but universally relatable. Following the completion of\nthe original tour with Madeline at the center\,” says Brian Boruta\, Umbrella Stage Producing\nArtistic Director\, “we wanted to explore how the play could evolve\, be adapted for other\nperformers\, and reveal a continuing relevance for future productions and new audiences. SUMMARY:Telling a Better Story - Expand What You Know About Concord's History
DESCRIPTION:Are you hosting family and friends for the 250th? Would you like to impress them with what you know about Concord’s history? If you want to update the stories you know and learn new ones\, you will want to attend this talk.\n\nPublic historian Beth van Duzer has updated and expanded some well-known stories using primary sources\, such as John Jack’s\, enslaved to a Concord shoemaker Benjamin Barron\, able to purchase his freedom\, and buried in Concord’s Old Hill Burial Ground. Additionally\, new stories have emerged that enrich Concord’s history\, including the tale of an Indigenous boy who lived in Concord in the late 1700s\, women who were compensated by the Town of Concord whose husbands served as soldiers during the Revolutionary War\, and the expanded story of an enslaved woman who later lived as a free person in Concord. \nBeth van Duzer is an independent historian in Concord\, MA. She earned a bachelor’s degree in English from Montclair State University and a master’s degree in History\, focused on Public History\, from Southern New Hampshire University. Beth is the co-chair and clerk of the Concord250 History & Education Subcommittee and is the owner of Concord Walking Tours\, a history research and tour company.

DESCRIPTION:The Concord Band presents Music From Warm Places on Saturday\, March 8\, 2025\, 7:00 PM at the 51 Walden Performing Arts Center in Concord MA. Under the baton of Music Director James O’Dell\, the program includes captivating works by Lewis Buckley\, Nubia Jaime-Donjuan\, Shelly Hanson\, Terry White and Óscar Navarro. \nA highlight of the program is the Concerto for Clarinet and Wind Band by Spanish composer Óscar Navarro\, masterfully performed by Acton resident Jerry Vabulas\, an outstanding soloist and member of the Concord Band since 2012. Jerry has also soloed with Leominster Colonial Band\, the Fitchburg Military Band\, the Carlisle Chamber Orchestra\, the Lowell Philharmonic Orchestra and the Lincoln-Sudbury Civic Orchestra. Navarro’s composition displays the full range and virtuosity of the clarinet\, along with extended delicate pianissimos and an irresistible touch of jazz. \nJaime-Donjuan’s four-movement Little Mexican Suite is based on traditional Mexican musical genres. Each movement is inspired by a species of tree native to Mexico that has touched the composer’s life. Volver A La Montaña (Return to the Mountain)\, by Shelly Hanson\, is based on the folk music of the Quechua people of Ecuador\, Peru and Bolivia. Terry White’s Fantasia Latina\, a composition commissioned by percussionist Neil Tischler that premiered in March 2020\, is based on four Latin dance styles—tango\, danzon\, songo and samba—and is full of unexpected rhythmic and harmonic twists. Con Sabor Español (With a Spanish Flavor)\, composed by the MetWinds’ former director\, Lew Buckley\, also features numerous rhythmic and time changes. \nThe evening also features a special guest performance by the distinguished Area 9 Saxophone Quartet playing Saxophone Quartet by Venezuelan composer and pianist Aldemaro Romero. Area 9 is a Boston-based ensemble committed to performing rich\, diverse\, and ever growing chamber music repertoire for saxophone. \nAdmission is free to the public; donations of $20 are requested. DESCRIPTION:This illustrated virtual talk will focus on the stories told by objects in the Concord Museum collection about the lead-up to April 19\, 1775\, and the epochal day itself. In the aggregate\, these stories contribute forcefully to an understanding that the Revolution\, the great turn from a monarchy to a republic\, was already over well before the day the Revolutionary War began.\n\n\n\nDavid Wood\, Curator of the Concord Museum\, has served at the Museum since 1985 and provides deep knowledge of the collection and Concord history. He has overseen the development of over 40 temporary exhibitions and galleries. If you can’t be with us in person\, watch online. \n“A Fight for Freedom: Honoring Patriots of Color” is a two-hour live  event dedicated to uncovering and honoring the often-overlooked contributions of Black and Indigenous patriots  both during the American Revolution and the long struggle for continued expansion of  freedom and liberty over the past 250 years. \nThis event will take place at the Umbrella Arts\, 40 Stow Street in Concord. \nIn 1775\, between 20 and 40 colonists of African and Indigenous descent fought alongside their fellow revolutionaries on the Battle Road during the opening conflict of the American Revolution. These individuals\, who had been excluded from formal militia service prior to the war\, became some of the earliest patriots to take up arms in the fight for liberty. By the end of the Revolutionary War\, approximately 5\,500  people of color had served in the Continental Army or militia\, risking their lives for the promise of freedom. \nDespite their significant role in the founding of the United States\, the stories of these patriots and their descendants  have often been erased or overshadowed by historical bias\, and their sacrifices obscured by a narrative written by others. \nBy telling their stories and honoring their service\, we not only shed light on their essential contributions but also expand our understanding of the nation’s founding. Their bravery and resilience remind us that the struggle for freedom has always been fought by people from all backgrounds and walks of life. Today\, efforts at the national and state levels—particularly in Massachusetts—are working to correct this historical oversight and honor the full spectrum of those who fought and continue to fight for liberty and equality for all people. \nProgram Highlights: \n\nHistorical Narratives: Historical interpreters guide participants through the stories of people  who fought for independence. SUMMARY:Concord250 Event: Concord Free Public Library Concert
DESCRIPTION:Concord Free Public Library Concert\, Rotunda \nPeter Sykes is one of the most distinguished and versatile keyboard artists performing today. He will be performing a harpsichord concert reflecting music in homes in the American colonial era. \nConcerts are free and open to the public\, but reservations are required. Reservations open at 9 a.m. on the Saturday two weeks before the concert. The library closes at 5 on the day of the concert\, volunteers with oversight from a library staff member prepare for the concert\, then the doors are opened for the audience at 7 p.m. Concerts are about 90 minutes long\, including a brief intermission. \nSave Date for April 5: Stephen Drury is a pianist and conductor on the faculty of the New England Conservatory. His program features Bach\, Beethoven\, and Charles Ives’s Concord Sonata. \n  \n\n  \n\n
