DESCRIPTION:Queer Whispers in Fairyland – Examining Daniel Chester French\nWatch one minute video of Lucas Griswold\, inviting you October 10. \n\nJoin Lucas Griswold\, Senior Manager for Interpretation and Education at Chesterwood\, as we explore the power of self-construction and the complex interplay between public and private identities. \nRenowned as a meticulous molder of monumental images like Concord’s Minute Man\, Daniel Chester French carefully crafted the public persona that propelled him to the pinnacle of American sculpture. He is remembered as a family man\, marrying Mary Adams French and helping to raise their daughter\, Margaret French Cresson. \nBy examining French’s life and work through a queer historical lens\, this program challenges the traditional assumptions about the sculptor’s identity. Lucas Griswold\, Senior Manager for Interpretation and Education at Chesterwood\, presents groundbreaking research that sheds new light on French’s life. DESCRIPTION:The 2024 Massachusetts Provincial Congress\n“Exploring Democracy – Our Rights and Our Responsibilities”\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOctober 11\, 2024\n9:30am – 4:30pm\nFirst Parish in Concord and The Wright Tavern\n*Register here to attend* \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn October 1774\, the political conflict between Great Britain and Massachusetts reached a crisis. Parliament enacted the “Intolerable Acts” to punish the province for the Tea Party\, and they revoked the charter of 1691 by which the popularly elected House of Representatives joined with the Council and Crown-appointed Governor to rule the Bay Colony. In the ensuing furor\, county conventions protested the changes; crowds closed courts\, Patriots took over county militias\, and encouraged towns to resist the new regime of the General Court. Royal Governor Thomas Gage called the Court to meet in Salem\, but the Assembly never convened. \nAlthough Gage canceled the session\, the representatives decided to meet behind closed and locked doors and reorganize as the Massachusetts Provincial Congress. Its first session opened a week later\, on October 11th\, in Concord\, safe from the control of British authorities. The gathering was a landmark in the history of self-government.  The Congress set the colony on a collision course with Britain and an eventual road to independence.  Even as it proclaimed loyalty to the Crown\, the Congress mobilized the province in a struggle to reclaim the rights and liberties Massachusetts had enjoyed. Without declaring independence\, the popularly elected body seized the reins of power\, charted a new future for Massachusetts\, and set a model of self-government. \nOctober 11\, 2024\, marks the 250th Anniversary of the Massachusetts Provincial Congress. To commemorate this occasion and honor our forebearers\, the Wright Tavern Legacy Trust is sponsoring a gathering in Concord’s First Parish Meetinghouse and the Wright Tavern next door\, where the delegates to the Congress met. This will be a day-long\, engaging program. With noted historians to guide us\, we will return to this crucial moment in the history of the American Revolution and ask what we can learn from the past. With state legislators joining us\, we will examine the state of democratic governance in Massachusetts and the United States today. And\, with students and teachers from Massachusetts schools\, we will collaboratively explore the future of democracy.  Come join us for this remarkable day. \nREGISTER for this historic event!

In 1774 it was also a time of preparation for the coming conflict. DESCRIPTION:October 15 @ 1:00 PM\n\n\nCelebrate the 250th birthday of the battles of Concord and Lexington by helping us recreate Daniel Chester French’s iconic statue The Minute Man through collaborative 3D printing! \nWhat is this?\nThe Workshop is collaborating with local artist and author Dr. Linda Booth Sweeney to reimagine and reproduce a scale model of Daniel Chester French’s iconic statue The Minute Man through a collaborative 3D printing process! There are two ways to participate: \n#1 Print a Part.\nMakers of all ages are invited to visit the Workshop any time during regular Open Maker Hours to 3D print a part (or several!) of The Minute Man! Just follow the instructions to reserve a 3D printer and ask for a design file when you arrive! The Minute Man is a great project for beginners\, but if you’re new to our machines\, we strongly recommend reviewing our instructional materials before your visit \n#2 Build Together.\nMakers of all ages can also attend one of our interactive building sessions throughout the year to learn more about The Minute Man and 3D modeling and printing from Workshop staff and local artist and author Dr. Linda Booth Sweeney\, while assembling the pieces printed by our neighbors! Find upcoming sessions on the Workshop Calendar! \nWhere will the final project be displayed?\nNo matter how you choose to participate\, all contributors will have the opportunity to add their name to our makers record to be displayed alongside the completed project at the Library in 2025. \nIsn’t that a lot of plastic?\nYes\, it is! As a Certified Sustainable Library\, we take the environmental impact of a project like this very seriously. All components of the (Re)Make will be composed of PLA\, a vegetable-based plastic. The Library has secured a speciality recycling vendor to process the statue and any waste materials in the event that the statue must be disposed of. \nMy school/company/non-profit organization has a 3D printer – can we help?\nYes! DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the Mexican Day of the Dead by decorating Sugar Skulls!  \nThis traditional art form is practiced in parts of Mexico for Dia de Los Muertos on November 1st and 2nd. They are placed on alters with photos\, flowers and other welcoming objects in commemoration of ancestors and beloveds who have passed on. Workshop participants will get a sugar skull\, puffy paints sequins and beads to decorate skulls.
