Outdoors interpretative sculptures reflecting the bathtub metaphor’s systems dynamics will express an art/science collaborative vision for our climate future. \n  \nThe Umbrella is ADA accessible\, and provides free parking and free admission to its visual arts galleries. \n  \nRELATED ACTIVITIES \n  \nThursday\, April 11\, 5-7:30PM \nOpening reception and environmental mixer\, artist-scientist panel discussion\, and remarks by public officials and the curators. \n  \nSaturday\, April 20\, 1-5PM \nYouth Forward Climate Action Day\, featuring Mend-a-thon\, Youth-led guided tours\, Free Family Fun Activity\, “Heartbeat Space” projection installation by Casey Figueroa\, Eco Slow Fashion Show\, and other activities. SUMMARY:Ellen Garrison: Scenes from an Activist Life
DESCRIPTION:In 1835\, 12-year-old Ellen Garrison marched in the Concord bicentennial parade\, the only person of color to participate\, launching her into a life of civil rights activism. Ellen Garrison: Scenes from an Activist Life\, the latest Half the History film from Five Sisters Productions and Tufts University\, highlights key moments in Garrison’s career\, from the parade to her teaching in the South after the Civil War\, to her challenging segregation in a Baltimore trail station waiting room in 1866\, a century before Rosa Parks. \nThe film emerges as the town’s Concord 250 committee has sought to plan an expansive and inclusive commemoration of its history and role at the start of the American Revolution\, and the semiquincentennial of “the shot heard round the world” coming up on April 19\, 2025.\nGarrison was born and raised in The Robbins House in 1823\, granddaughter and daughter of formerly enslaved men including grandfather\, Caesar Robbins\, a farmer and Revolutionary War veteran\, and father\, Jack Garrison\, who escaped slavery in New Jersey. A Town proclamation marking her 200th birthday on April 14\, 2023\, became the first formal Concord 250 event\, followed in 2024 with a celebratory event with film preview at the historic Concord Armory. \nThis June 8\, 2024\, The Umbrella Arts Center will host the world premiere screening of Ellen Garrison: Scenes from an Activist Life\, directed by Jennifer Burton and Ursula Burton and produced by Five Sisters Productions and Julie Dobrow\, with the Tufts Production Team. The short film will be followed by a behind-the-scenes mini-documentary and an interactive discussion with members of the filmmaking team\, Concord 250\, and The Robbins House. \nThis event is free and open to the public\, but with limited capacity\, so RSVP in advance is requested at https://TheUmbrellaArts.org/Ellen. The Umbrella is ADA accessible\, and provides free parking and free admission to its visual arts galleries.

SUMMARY:We Were Friends Play – Two Years In: Birthdays
DESCRIPTION:Award-winning Firelight Theatre Workshop presents We Were Friends\, a playful reimagining of Margaret Fuller and Ralph Waldo Emerson’s profound friendship set in today’s world. In this 12-part series (two episodes of which are being performed at the Concord Museum this summer)\, Firelight explores the intimate and private moments of this deep\, platonic friendship. The series moves non-chronologically: each episode stands alone\, and yet each is a puzzle piece in the larger portrait of their friendship. In this first installment\, Two Years In: Birthdays\, we invite you to join Margaret and Waldo as they celebrate their birthdays on two distant picnic blankets. Margaret is suffering from a cold and indecision. Waldo\, a rising writer and speaker\, wonders about Beauty: is it always there\, or is there never enough of it? Bring your own picnic blanket and join Margaret and Waldo on the Museum’s front lawn for this outdoor performance. Following the performance\, writers and performers Nora Fifer and Jason Lambert and co-writer Henry Walters will participate in a talk-back with the audience. $10 Member | $12 Non-Member (Receive a $2 discount if you purchase tickets to both performances in advance of the first performance)

This town supported celebration is a formal recognition of the dignity and importance of this holiday for all residents of Concord and those who visit. \nThe Concord Select Board signed a proclamation which declared June 19\, 2023 Juneteenth National Independence Day. In addition\, an amendment to the flag policy was approved which provides for the flying of a Juneteenth flag with the American flag. We invite the Concord community to join us for celebratory events that honor our history and our community. \nFAQ\n\nJuneteenth is a federal holiday in the United States commemorating the emancipation of enslaved African Americans. Deriving its name from combining “June” and “nineteenth”\, it is celebrated on the anniversary of the order\, issued by Major General Gordon Granger on June 19\, 1865\, proclaiming freedom for the enslaved in Texas\, the last to freed.\nOriginating in Galveston\, Juneteenth has since been observed annually in various parts of the United States\, often broadly celebrating African American culture. The day was first recognized as a federal holiday in 2021\, when President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act\nTexans celebrated Juneteenth beginning in 1866 with community-centric events\, such as parades\, cookouts\, prayer gatherings\, historical and cultural readings\, and musical performances. Over time\, communities have developed their own traditions. Some communities purchased land for Juneteenth celebrations\, such as Emancipation Park in Houston\, Texas. As families emigrated from Texas to other parts of the United States\, they carried Juneteenth celebrations with them.\nJuneteenth National Independence Day commemorates the day of freedom for African Americans and acknowledges the resilience and determination of African Americans while honoring all those who have paved the road to freedom; and Juneteenth is a second Independence Day for our Nation\, a celebratory day of African American culture to recognize the many contributions and influence that the African American community has made to our Nation.\nThe Juneteenth flag was designed by activist Ben Haith\, the founder of the National Juneteenth Celebration Foundation (NJCF) in 1997.  The design was later refined to its current form by illustrator Lisa Jeanne Grafe.  The intentional call back to the Texas Lone Star in the middle represents the Lone Star State and all Black Americans in the US.  The red\, white\, and blue color scheme is a reminder that enslaved people and their descendants were and are\, Americans.  The arc shape represents a new horizon of hope and promise for Black American with the nova surrounding the star representing a new beginning for all.
