SUMMARY:The 20-Minute Music Man at the Concord Main Library Saturday April 6
DESCRIPTION:The 20-Minute Music Man at the Concord Main Library Saturday April 6 \nOn Saturday\, April 6th at 3:00 pm in the Goodwin Forum\, The Concord Players will present a Sneak Peak of their spring production of The Music Man! \nThis beloved musical tells the tale of the fast-talking salesman Harold Hill as he arrives in River City with plans to charm the town\, form a children’s band and make a quick buck. What happens next takes the entire town by surprise especially Marian\, their uptight librarian\, along with her younger brother\, Winthrop\, and their mother Mrs. Paroo. \nJoin the Players as they travel back to 1912 Iowa with a few musical highlights and a behind-the-scenes preview from the show’s directors. Children (of all ages) will even have the opportunity to learn a portion of the “76 Trombones” dance routine that will appear on stage! \nTickets are on sale now for performances April 26 – May 11: concordplayers.org

SUMMARY:Meriam’s Corner Exercise
DESCRIPTION:Meriam’s Corner Exercise\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n2024 Event\nOpen House at Meriam’s Corner\nApril 6\, 2024\nNathan Meriam House\n11:00 am – 2:00 pm \n\nVisit the Nathan Meriam witness house and talk with costumed park staff about the Meriam family and the importance of the crossroad near their home on April 19\, 1775. In the early afternoon of that fateful day\, Militia soldiers arriving from Reading\, Chelmsford\, and Billerica attacked retreating British soldiers near this home. From Meriam’s Corner to Charlestown the fighting raged continuously for 8 hours and roughly 16 miles. Today\, this important home marks the beginning of the “Battle Road.”\nParking:\nMeriam’s Corner Parking Lot: 751 Lexington Road\, Concord\, MA.\nOverflow parking available on the day of the event.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHistory\nThis commemoration marks the assembly and actions of militia and minuteman units that arrived at Meriam’s Corner during the British retreat from Concord\, April 19th\, 1775. After the Regulars’ withdrawal from the North Bridge where they had engaged with more than 400 Minutemen\, they began a retreat back to Boston. By the time the Regulars arrived at this spot at half past noon\, there were reported to be about 1\,100 Minutemen in the area from more than a dozen towns. A challenge by the Regulars started a classic guerilla action\, which continued for many hours as the outnumbered British retreated towards Boston. At least two British privates were killed and several others wounded here during that initial exchange. By the time the day was over\, 49 Colonials had died\, 73 British troops were killed\, plus 173 wounded and missing. \nThus began a war that would not end until Yorktown\, more than 6 long years later\, and thus our nation was born.

SUMMARY:From Pasadena to Concord: Telling The Whole Story
DESCRIPTION:Pasadena city leader Veronica Jones comes to speak in Concord  about  their work honoring Black history. 4/13. 2pm at CFPL\nSponsored by Robbins House\, Concord 250 and Special Collections\n\n\n\nFor 129 years\, Black educator and activist Ellen Garrison lay unsung and forgotten in an unmarked grave in Altadena\, California’s Mountain View Cemetery. \nEllen Garrison\, native daughter of Concord\, was the granddaughter of a freedman who fought in the Revolutionary War and spent years traveling alone through the South to teach formerly enslaved people how to read and write\, protected only by a paper “passport” to show she was a free person. \nThe residents of Altadena knew little of this hidden history\, but they were willing to learn\, listen\, and honor this heroine in their midst. Veronica Jones\, Vice Chair of the Town Council\, decided to act. Ms. Jones has a deep passion for uncovering hidden histories. Through her work with the Altadena Historical Society\, she spearheaded the placement of headstones on the graves of Ellen Garrison\, her husband\, and her sister. Additionally\, two scholarships are awarded to local Altadena students in memory of Ellen Garrison. Thanks to the Altadena Historical Society and Veronica Jones\, Ellen Garrison is celebrated every year on Juneteenth\, honoring the hidden histories of Altadena. \nThis process her community has gone through creates lasting change and deeper inclusion for all segments of her community. Veronica will share their journey and lessons learned and discuss how this work can impact us all\, no matter where we live. \nVeronica Jones is a retired life-long resident of Altadena\, California with vast experience in community development. She has worked extensively on public safety\, infrastructure improvements\, community-police relations\, economic development\, diversity and inclusion\, and re-establishing relationships with local\, state\, and federal government. She is highly regarded in her community as a change agent\, promoting integrity and economic growth. \n  \nPlease visit The Robbins House and the Altadena Historical Society to learn more. \nThis event is co-sponsored by Robbins House\, Concord250\, and The Concord Free Public Library’s William Munroe Special Collections. \n\n\nCAPACITY: 135 of 140 spaces available. \nNOTE: Registering more attendees than spaces available will automatically place your attendees on this event’s wait list. \nTo register\, please click here

SUMMARY:Concord\, There Is More To Our Story
DESCRIPTION:For over 10\,000 years\, humans have lived in this area\, which we know as modern Concord\, yet many of their stories have not been entirely told. With new research and a greater understanding of past events\, we open new windows and opportunities to tell fuller stories of our community’s people. \nFrom the Indigenous beginning of Musketequid to the encroachment of European arrivals\, there are stories to be told. We will discuss the building of colonial Concord and the role of both free and enslaved Black\, Indigenous\, and people of color individuals whose labor and heroism helped to build this community. Between twenty and forty colonists who fought along the Battle Road on April 19\, 1775\, were of African descent or Indigenous people. Although excluded from required militia service before the war\, these individuals of color were the first of many to take up arms between 1775 and 1783. Unfortunately\, systemic racism and historical bias have erased or buried many records of Black and Indigenous people who played a prominent role in the founding of the United States. We will examine the known history and stories of these Patriots of Color who fought for freedom locally during the American Revolution and beyond. \nAdditionally\, we will reflect on Concord’s history around enslavement\, the first generation of self-emancipated African-Americans\, and the growth of Abolitionism. We see how these families strived to support themselves on the land and in the town and worked to shape their destinies as free men and women. We will discuss the Robbins\, Garrison\, and Dugan families by examining the incredible stories of individuals who risked everything while struggling for liberty\, equality\, and freedom for all. \nOur discussion will conclude by examining 20th-century Concord and how its manifestation as a racially isolated community impacts and challenges its growth and development as a welcoming and inclusive community in the 21st century. \nOngoing learning together is helping our community answer these questions more fully. Who were we in the past? Who are we today? Who do we hope to become in the future? \nBorn and raised in Concord on a farm along Battle Road\, Joe Palumbo works locally as an interpreter and tour guide. He is focused on sharing the well-known and the lesser-known local narratives as we work to broaden the story of all the people in our town. Currently\, Joe serves as Chair of the Concord 250 Events Committee\, Co-Chair of the Town DEI Commission\, and is a Board member at The Robbins House. \nThis event is co-sponsored by Robbins House\, Concord250\, and The Concord Free Public Library’s William Munroe Special Collections.
