SUMMARY:Portraits in Red: Missing & Murdered Indigenous Painting Project
DESCRIPTION:The MMIP Painting Project began not as a project at all but with the intent of it being just one painting to show support for the Missing & Murdered indigenous peoples crisis. Artist Nayana laFond created the first painting on May 5\, 2020\, the day of remembrance for MMIP. She shared it ontine and the response was so overwhelming she did one more\, yet again intending that to be the end. The response to the second was even more and so Nayana opened her inbox to anyone wanting to be painted not expecting the 25+ the received the first day.Stories and images of loved ones missing\, murdered\, survivors and advocates/activists. It was then that it became a project when Nayana decided to paint them all and they didn’t stop coming. As of February 2024 there is now 110 completed paintings and a constant queue. \nThe paintings are done in black and white with red being the only color visible because many indigenous groups believe red is the only color spirits can see. The hand over the mouths symbolizes being silenced. \nNayana  is a domestic violence survivor and feels compelled to do this work to raise awareness and promote change and healing. The paintings are done for free and Nayana does not profit monetarily  from the creation or sale of these works. She donates any profits to the National Indigenous Women’s Resource Center (NIWRC.org). In lieu of taking monetary donations\, she asks people to donate to any of the many organizations working with families and toward change.

SUMMARY:The Minutes
DESCRIPTION:An evening in Big Cherry – a small town in anywhere USA – and the city council meeting unfolds in real time\, unmasking undercurrents that threaten to undo life as they know it … and driving the question\, “How far would you go?” \nAward-winning playwright Tracy Letts’ (August: Osage County) new play was called one of the most thrilling on Broadway in recent years. Nominated as Best New Play by the Tony Awards and Outer Critics Circle in 2022\, and for the Pulitzer Prize in drama\, The Minutes is part biting comedy\, part Hitchockian mystery\, and at its dark heart an unflinching allegory about small-town politics and real-world power. \nhttps://secure.theumbrellaarts.org/84434/85204

SUMMARY:Discovery Museum Speaker Series Event: How To Have Brave Conversations that Build Empathetic Kids
DESCRIPTION:Discovery Museum Speaker Series Event: How To Have Brave Conversations that Build Empathetic Kids \nWednesday\, March 6\, 2024\, 7pm – 8pm \nSpeaker: Valora Washington\, Ph.D.\, CEO & President\, The CAYL Institute; former Vice President\, W.K. Kellogg Foundation \nLocation: Live\, via Zoom webinar \nIn her role as Chief Executive Officer and President of The CAYL Institute\, Dr. Valora Washington is at the epicenter of current thinking about the biggest issues facing kids and families. She joins us to speak about one that is front of mind: Helping adults have the brave conversations that develop kids’ sense of empathy over judgment\, and respect the complexity of the world we live in. Dr. Washington will help us understand why keeping children “in a bubble” is not a reasonable option in today’s world\, and how choosing to be a powerful parent (or caregiver\, or grandparent\, or teacher) is one of the greatest gifts we can give the children in our lives. \nhttps://www.discoveryacton.org/events-programs/how-have-brave-conversations-build-empathetic-kids

SUMMARY:Fight for Freedom Public Art Project in Monument Square Community Forum
DESCRIPTION:Three semi-finalists have been selected to present their proposals for a temporary work to be installed on Monument Square in the fall of 2024. The works explore ideas to creatively interpret the ways in which people have struggled for the fight for freedom through time in Concord\, Massachusetts. Taking inspiration from the 250th anniversary of the start of the American Revolution in 2025\, the town seeks artists to consider the ways in which two 19th century Concord residents – Henry David Thoreau (1817 – 1862) and Ellen Garrison (1823 – 1892) – continued this fight for independence through the abolitionist cause. Through a visually compelling artwork\, we hope to more deeply investigate a pivotal time in Concord’s past to bring overlooked stories to the fore and to more actively grapple with our generation’s work to provide liberty and justice for all.\nOn March 6\, 2023 at 6:30 PM\, in person and on Zoom\, the public is given the opportunity to meet the artists\, view presentations and models of the work\, and provide feedback that will inform the final projects presented by: \nSilvana Mizrahi\nLiz Helfer\nKrystle Colleen Brown\nWednesday\, March 6\, 2024 \nIn person:\nHearing Room\nTown House\n22 Monument Square \nZoom :\nbit.ly/3OQ9JrZ \nThis project is presented by the Town of Concord as part of “Making It Public\,” a program of the New England Foundation for the Arts (NEFA) with Forecast and the Metropolitan Area Planning Council (MAPC). This program seeks to support more diverse\, inclusive\, and equitable public artmaking across Massachusetts.

SUMMARY:Blight: Author Emily Monosson in Conversation with Brent Ranalli
DESCRIPTION:Emily Monosson’s book Blight: Fungi and the Coming Pandemic is a prescient warning about the mysterious and deadly world of fungi—and how to avert further loss across species\, including our own. \nFungi are everywhere. Most are harmless; some are helpful. A few are killers. Collectively\, infectious fungi are the most devastating agents of disease on earth\, and a fungus that can persist in the environment without its host is here to stay. In Blight\, Emily Monosson documents how trade\, travel\, and a changing climate are making us all more vulnerable to invasion. Populations of bats\, frogs\, and salamanders face extinction. In the Northwest\, America’s beloved national parks are covered with the spindly corpses of whitebark pines. Food crops are under siege\, threatening our coffee\, bananas\, and wheat—and\, more broadly\, our global food security. Candida auris\, drug-resistant and resilient\, infects hospital patients and those with weakened immune systems. Coccidioides\, which lives in drier dusty regions\, may cause infection in apparently healthy people. The horrors go on. \nYet prevention is not impossible. Tracing the history of fungal spread and the most recent discoveries in the field\, Monosson meets scientists who are working tirelessly to protect species under threat\, and whose innovative approaches to fungal invasion have the potential to save human lives. Delving into case studies at once fascinating\, sobering\, and hopeful\, Blight serves as a wake-up call\, a reminder of the delicate interconnectedness of the natural world\, and a lesson in seeing life on our planet with renewed humility and awe. \nEmily Monosson is the author of Natural Defense\, Unnatural Selection\, and Evolution in a Toxic World. She is a member of the Ronin Institute for Independent Scholarship and an adjunct faculty member at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. She lives in Montague\, Massachusetts. \nBrent Ranalli in an environmental policy analyst at the Cadmus Group and co-edits Environment: An Interdisciplinary Anthology for Yale University Press. He edits the Thoreau Society Bulletin.

What will be the predominant features of life in the nation\, physically or ideologically?  What will have happened to Concord? What will have drawn new residents to Concord\, or what might have caused residents to leave? Any of these and all other topics can be the issues that you may look into to foresee and describe what will be known and common in the year 2075.  Your essay is to describe what will be. SUMMARY:Pockets: An Intimate History of How We Keep Things Close
DESCRIPTION:Who gets pockets\, and why? It’s a subject that stirs up plenty of passion: Why do men’s clothes have so many pockets and women’s so few? Hannah Carlson\, fashion historian at the Rhode Island School of Design\, joins us for a conversation on the issues of gender politics\, security\, sexuality\, power\, and privilege tucked inside our pockets.  Beginning 500 years ago when medieval tailors stitched the first pockets into men’s trousers\, Dr. Carlson introduces a range of social issues that we continue to wrestle with today.
