SUMMARY:2023 Art Ramble: Geo-Metric
DESCRIPTION:Art Ramble is an annual\, temporary public art exhibition in the Hapgood Wright Town Forest in Concord\, MA\, a collaboration of The Umbrella Art Center and Concord’s Division of Natural Resources (CDNR). Following Leave No Trace principles\, regional artists create site-specific artworks promoting appreciation of nature\, installed along Fairyland Pond and parts of the historic Emerson-Thoreau Amble connecting Concord Center to Walden Pond. On view September 1- November 19\, 2023\, with Artist Reception & Walkabout Saturday September 9 at 11AM (Rain Date: Sunday\, September 10 at 11AM). \nThe theme of this year’s exhibition is “Geo-Metric” – literally meaning Earth measurement. While traditionally\, basic geometry relies on axioms used to measure fixed shapes and construct solid objects that will stand the test of time\, “Geo-Metric” here refers to the ability to measure change. Our planet is constantly in motion and changes with exposure to light\, temperature\, weather\, human intervention and climate change. The season visibly changes from summer to fall over the run of the Art Ramble\, but what are the changes and patterns (geometric or otherwise) that we do not see? How can we make visible the patterns of nature and their disruption — raising awareness of the threats to our environment as well as nature’s keen ability to adapt and survive? \nThis year’s Art Ramble includes interactive installations as well as quiet\, contemplative sculptures. Several will change over the course of the exhibition as they interact with nature\, visitors\, and the seasons. Be sure to visit The Umbrella’s front lawn to see one additional “Geo-Metric” sculpture.

SUMMARY:Concord and the Vietnam War
DESCRIPTION:Concord and the Vietnam War\nSUNDAY\, NOVEMBER 52:00—4:00 PMGoodwin ForumMain Library129 Main Street\, Concord\, MA\, 01742\n\n\nConcord and the Vietnam War: Vietnam Veterans Recount the Protest They Staged at the Old North Bridge in 1971 and How it Led to One of the Largest Mass Arrests in Massachusetts History  \nOn the opening night of Memorial Day Weekend in 1971\, men wearing fatigues began to gather at the Old North Bridge in Concord to protest the ongoing war which they had just returned home from fighting. Their plan was to camp overnight and then march all the way to Boston Common. Photographs of them crossing the bridge were splashed across the region’s newspapers. For the liberal press\, these were the new Minute Men. \nOn a panel moderated by Elise Lemire\, author of Black Walden and Battle Green\, Vietnam\, three Massachusetts Vietnam veterans recall why they chose to stage their protests against the Vietnam War at New England’s most storied battlefields\, their decision on the second day of the march to emulate Thoreau by occupying the Lexington Battle Green without permission\, and their reception in Concord when they were tried in Middlesex Court for civil disobedience.  This panel with Vietnam veterans Bestor Cram\, Christopher Gregory\, and Lenny Rotman\, will explore the role of memorialized battlefields\, the principles of civil disobedience\, and the role protest can play in healing moral injuries.

SUMMARY:Veterans’ Day Flag Retirement
DESCRIPTION:Veterans’ Day Flag Retirement\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n2023 Event\n\nSaturday\, November 11\, 2023\n8 a.m.\n7:45 a.m. muster at:\nPrichard’s Gate\n34 Bedford Street\nConcord\, MA 01742\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHistory\nThe Flag Retirement Ceremony is traditionally held each year on Veteran’s Day and enables Concordians the opportunity to retire their American Flags in a respectful and appropriate manner. \nThis local ceremony was established in 1965: \n\nJames Carroll\nClark McClevin\nFrancis McDonald\nBernard Rushe\nThomas Tombeno\n\nThese individuals felt that the many cemetery flags\, which were torn and faded from being left in place through the fall and winter months\, honored neither our nation’s colors nor our departed veterans. It was decided that each year\, on Veteran’s Day\, the worn flags would be collected by the Public Ceremonies and Celebrations Committee and retired in an appropriate manner.
