SUMMARY:2023 Art Ramble: Geo-Metric
DESCRIPTION:Art Ramble is an annual\, temporary public art exhibition in the Hapgood Wright Town Forest in Concord\, MA\, a collaboration of The Umbrella Art Center and Concord’s Division of Natural Resources (CDNR). Following Leave No Trace principles\, regional artists create site-specific artworks promoting appreciation of nature\, installed along Fairyland Pond and parts of the historic Emerson-Thoreau Amble connecting Concord Center to Walden Pond. On view September 1- November 19\, 2023\, with Artist Reception & Walkabout Saturday September 9 at 11AM (Rain Date: Sunday\, September 10 at 11AM). \nThe theme of this year’s exhibition is “Geo-Metric” – literally meaning Earth measurement. While traditionally\, basic geometry relies on axioms used to measure fixed shapes and construct solid objects that will stand the test of time\, “Geo-Metric” here refers to the ability to measure change. Our planet is constantly in motion and changes with exposure to light\, temperature\, weather\, human intervention and climate change. The season visibly changes from summer to fall over the run of the Art Ramble\, but what are the changes and patterns (geometric or otherwise) that we do not see? How can we make visible the patterns of nature and their disruption — raising awareness of the threats to our environment as well as nature’s keen ability to adapt and survive? \nThis year’s Art Ramble includes interactive installations as well as quiet\, contemplative sculptures. Several will change over the course of the exhibition as they interact with nature\, visitors\, and the seasons. Be sure to visit The Umbrella’s front lawn to see one additional “Geo-Metric” sculpture.

SUMMARY:Bears of the East
DESCRIPTION:Join The Walden Woods Project  September 20th\, from 7:00 pm – 8:15 pm for a free\, virtual presentation\, “BEARS OF THE WEST: VITAL GROUND FOUNDATION AND DOUGLAS CHADWICK”!  \nAbout the event: Veteran environmental writer Douglas Chadwick will present ideas from his most recent book Four Fifths A Grizzly:  A New Perspective on Nature that Just Might Save Us All.  He will explore the interconnectedness of nature\, advocating that the path toward conservation begins with how we see our place in the world.  Answering the question of how we can change this era’s trajectory\, Chadwick will present examples of successful recoveries of species and habitats\, with the thought that “we really can save a whole lot in a hurry.” \nDoug will be introduced by Matthew Hart from The Vital Ground Foundation\, a land trust working to protect and connect wildlife habitat in the West.  Vital Ground offers a model for large landscape connectivity and letting a single species – grizzly bears – guide us to conserving biodiversity. \nBears of the West: Vital Ground Foundation & Douglas Chadwick (networkforgood.com)

SUMMARY:Lizzie: The Musical
DESCRIPTION:The subject of centuries-old\, sing-song villainy\, Lizzie Borden turns searing rock anthem anti-hero and has audiences raging in their seats.   Lizzie was famously acquitted and yet the question lingers… did she do it? Now\, as the story is retold in Lizzie the Musical is by four women defying musical theater stereotypes\, fronting a six-piece rock band\, and delivering a score that epitomizes riot grrrl power\, Lizzie finally gets her say.  At Umbrella Arts Center\, Sept. 8:00 pm – Nov. 5- 5:00 p.m. Nominated for three Drama Desk awards and named best musical eight times over in regional awards around the country and the world\, this musical is totally whack (in a good way)!   The production is helmed by Ilyse Robbins\, and features Sophia Muharram\, Liza Giangrande\, Nora Sullivan\, Temma Beaudreau\, Stephanie Barney\, and Eleni Kontzamanys.   “Presented with wall-rattling glee…deliciously watchable!” – The New York Times   “Take a pure American gothic tale that grabbed the headlines in a small New England town in 1892 and quickly went on to become a cause celebre across the nation. Set it to a volcanic\, quasi-operatic punk rock beat that captures the sense of female rage\, retribution and betrayal\, and feels custom-made for the current climate. And then just let it roar.” – Chicago Sun Times
