SUMMARY:Discovery Museum Speaker Series: Does Parenting Have To Be This Hard? What Babies Can Teach Us
DESCRIPTION:Discovery Museum Speaker Series event with Dr. J. Kevin Nugent\, Founder and Director Emeritus of the Brazelton Institute in the Division of Developmental Medicine at Boston Children’s Hospital \n  \nAmerican parents are finding parenting much harder than they expected.  Over 80% of parents use internet search engines to look for parenting advice\, but less than 50% of them found the results to be trustworthy. Almost 70% of parents say they would use more positive parenting strategies if only they knew them. So\, where do we find these more positive parenting strategies that go beyond the prescriptive expert-driven “how to” approach of the internet?  Our research suggests that the baby can teach us most of what we need to know as parents\, since children influence the way their parents behave as much as parents influence their children. In fact\, much of what looks like the effect of genes may really be the result of the way genes feed back on the environment. Event is free\, advance registration is required.

SUMMARY:Pianist Jake Kinney performs Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue
DESCRIPTION:The Concord Band opens its 2024–25 season with a concert on Saturday\, October 26\, 7:00 pm at the 51 Walden Performing Arts Center. Music Director James O’Dell chose the theme “100th Anniversaries” in recognition of Geoge Gershwin’s composition and premiere of Rhapsody in Blue in 1924\, a year that marks many musical milestones. \nThe program commemorates the passing of composer Giacomo Puccini\, the most successful proponent of Italian opera after Verdi\, and Gabriel Fauré\, one of the foremost French composers of his generation. The program also features Camille Saint-Saëns’ Pas Redouble\, arranged for band by Arthur Frackenpohl\, as well as Academy Award winning themes by Henry Mancini\, considered one of the greatest composers in the history of film\, in an arrangement by Warren Barker. Both Frackenpohl and Mancini were born in 1924. \nGershwin composed Rhapsody in Blue in a few short weeks for a concert by Paul Whiteman’s Palais Royal Orchestra\, titled “An Experiment in Modern Music\,” presented at Aeolean Hall in New York City in February of 1924. Whiteman’s intent was to show that American jazz could be combined with classical and other types of music. The original score by Ferde Grofe comprised 23 instruments and piano solo. Subsequently\, Thomas Verrier expanded the original setting to concert band instrumentation based on Grofe’s manuscripts. \nPianist Jake Kinney is the featured soloist on Rhapsody in Blue. Kinney is a versatile musician\, performing with the Concord Band on trumpet\, with the Jazz Ensemble on piano\, as well as leading the Holiday Pops sing-along on vocals. \nAdmission to the Concord Band’s Fall Concert is free\, with a requested donation of $20 per person. A reception will follow the concert.

SUMMARY:Concord’s Monumental (Re)Make
DESCRIPTION:October 15 @ 1:00 PM\n\n\nCelebrate the 250th birthday of the battles of Concord and Lexington by helping us recreate Daniel Chester French’s iconic statue The Minute Man through collaborative 3D printing! \nWhat is this?\nThe Workshop is collaborating with local artist and author Dr. Linda Booth Sweeney to reimagine and reproduce a scale model of Daniel Chester French’s iconic statue The Minute Man through a collaborative 3D printing process! There are two ways to participate: \n#1 Print a Part.\nMakers of all ages are invited to visit the Workshop any time during regular Open Maker Hours to 3D print a part (or several!) of The Minute Man! Just follow the instructions to reserve a 3D printer and ask for a design file when you arrive! The Minute Man is a great project for beginners\, but if you’re new to our machines\, we strongly recommend reviewing our instructional materials before your visit \n#2 Build Together.\nMakers of all ages can also attend one of our interactive building sessions throughout the year to learn more about The Minute Man and 3D modeling and printing from Workshop staff and local artist and author Dr. Linda Booth Sweeney\, while assembling the pieces printed by our neighbors! Find upcoming sessions on the Workshop Calendar! \nWhere will the final project be displayed?\nNo matter how you choose to participate\, all contributors will have the opportunity to add their name to our makers record to be displayed alongside the completed project at the Library in 2025. \nIsn’t that a lot of plastic?\nYes\, it is! As a Certified Sustainable Library\, we take the environmental impact of a project like this very seriously. All components of the (Re)Make will be composed of PLA\, a vegetable-based plastic. The Library has secured a speciality recycling vendor to process the statue and any waste materials in the event that the statue must be disposed of. \nMy school/company/non-profit organization has a 3D printer – can we help?\nYes! Just complete our (Re)Make Partnership Interest Form\, and our staff will be happy to reach out with more information.
