DESCRIPTION:Award-winning Firelight Theatre Workshop presents We Were Friends: To Bed/Eggs\, an episodic project of Firelight’s playful reimagining of Margaret Fuller and Ralph Waldo Emerson’s profound friendship set in today’s world. A late-night phone conversation between Ralph and Margaret takes the form of a radio play in which music\, film\, voice\, and the hypnotic hum of a sleep apnea machine lead the two friends into territory both more intimate and less certain than any they’ve experienced in each other’s presence. This episode will be followed by a talkback with Firelight’s actors and writers.

DESCRIPTION:SUMMER CERAMICS: Wheel Fundamentals \nMondays\, July 6 – August 10\, 6 – 9 PM (6 weeks) \nAge range: Adult \nCost: $405 \nInstructor: Kyle Johns \n  \nThis course is designed for those who would like to gain a basic understanding of the fundamentals of wheel throwing as well as for those with experience who want to build new skills and strengthen their throwing technique. This class will cover many technical and aesthetic concerns of working with clay. Demonstrations and projects will be made accessible for new students and scalable for those with more experience. Beginners will be introduced to clay by learning the fundamentals of working on a potter’s wheel and the basics of hand-building techniques. For students with experience in the basics of wheel throwing\, more specific projects and challenges will be offered as will the option to develop projects independently. This class is suitable for all skill levels. \n  \nAbout the instructor: Widely exhibited and published artist and teacher\, Kyle Johns was a Ceramics Artist-in-Residence at The Umbrella Arts Center and currently is the Ceramics Studio Technician. With an MFA from Ohio University\, Kyle has been a resident at Red Lodge Clay Center\, The Interdisciplinary Ceramics Research Center\, The Archie Bray Foundation\, and The International Ceramics Center in Kecskemet\, Hungary. He has taught at Kansas State University\, Massachusetts College of Art and Design\, and the Ceramics Program at Harvard University.

DESCRIPTION:Join Concord Fife and Drum as they bring to life the sounds and songs of the American Revolution! \nMusic had an important role to play in the Revolutionary war\, from keeping spirits up to helping direct soldiers on the battlefield. To celebrate the Fourth of July\, and the 250th anniversary of our country’s independence\, members of Concord Fife and Drum will join us under the Old Manse tent to share some of the music that was heard in New England throughout the Revolutionary War\, including songs heard at the Battle of the North Bridge. \nWhile this program is free for all\, advanced registration is suggested. \nThis program does not include admission to the historic house. At the Old Manse\, we see this contradiction embodied in the life of William Emerson\, “Patriot Preacher” and slave holder. We also see it deeply impacting the lives of Cate\, Phyllis\, and Frank\, three people enslaved by the Bliss-Emerson family. In this tour\, the stories of the Old Manse at the time of the American Revolution serve to tell a broader story of American freedom and enslavement. \nSpace is limited and advanced registration is recommended. Upon arrival\, please check in at the bookstore. It is recommended to arrive 10-15 minutes before your tour starts. \nThe historic house has several flights of steep stairs and is not wheelchair accessible. DESCRIPTION:Between twenty and forty colonists who fought along the Battle Road on April 19\, 1775\, were of African descent or Indigenous people. Although excluded from required militia service prior to the war\, these individuals of color were the first of many to take up arms between 1775 and 1783. \nBy the end of the conflict\, an estimated 5\,500 African and Indigenous  men served on the colonial side. Unfortunately\, systemic racism and historical bias have erased or buried many records of Black and Indigenous people who played a prominent role in the founding of the United States. In this 90 minute walking tour we will examine the known history and stories of these Patriots of Color who fought for freedom locally both during the American Revolution and beyond.
