DESCRIPTION:  \nThe Umbrella Arts Center is excited to expand The Umbrella Concert Series to include casual and intimate shows spotlighting some of your future-favorite musical acts who are up-and-coming through the Salt Lick Incubator program. Up next: Grace Gardner\, Sofia Lafuente\, and Farayi Malek! \nGrace Gardner \nRaised on the outskirts of a Texas city and now living in New England\, Grace Gardner is pushing the boundaries of the singer-songwriter genre. While their music adopts many of the genre’s characteristics\, Grace has found inspiration in their parents’ taste in ’70s and ’80s rock\, the folk roots of their Southern upbringing\, the heart of the sounds of New Orleans—where they studied neuroscience in college—and the lyric-forward storytelling they always return to. Taking it one step further\, producing all of their own music allows Grace to maintain a personal\, authentic touch in each of their songs. Their lyricism is evocative and emotional\, poignantly capturing the joys and tribulations of relationships\, recovery\, and identity—typically backdropped by thoughtful guitar and intricate production. \nGrace’s inspirations include eclectic powerhouse writers from the 1970s—Carole King\, Stevie Nicks\, Labi Siffre\, and Joan Baez. As they honed their own musical style\, finding the intersection between soft rock\, indie\, and folk\, they’ve drawn further inspiration from artists like Madison Cunningham\, Adrianne Lenker\, Andy Shauf\, and Madi Diaz. Grace plays ten instruments and incorporates orchestral\, brass\, percussive\, and software-based elements into their work. Along with being a singer\, songwriter\, and multi-instrumentalist\, Grace is also a producer and arranger. \nGrace’s debut EP\, *Peach*\, was released in March 2023\, featuring the lead single “Deny Me.” They have joined artists such as Adam Melchor\, Frances Forever\, and Tiny Habits on their headline tours and will embark on their first headline tour in early 2025. Their sophomore EP\, *Recovery Mile*\, was released in February 2024\, and their third project\, *After Knowing*\, is due at the very end of 2024\, preceded by a co-release with Buffchick entitled “Big Picture.” \nCheck her out on Instagram\, TikTok\, and YouTube @gracegardnermusic. \nSofia Lafuente \nSofia Lafuente is a Spanish-American artist and songwriter whose bicultural\, bilingual upbringing shapes her introspective\, emotionally charged music. Split between Miami and Madrid\, she has quickly made a name for herself in the Latin alternative scene. Her ethereal vocals and evocative storytelling have earned her a dedicated following. \nInspired by artists like Lana Del Rey\, early Shakira\, and Lizzy McAlpine\, Sofia’s music resonates with listeners drawn to vulnerability and emotional depth. Beyond her solo work\, she is a sought-after songwriter\, known for her distinctive voice and introspective lyrics. With a growing industry presence\, she continues to captivate audiences\, solidifying her status as an artist to watch. \nFarayi Malek \nFarayi Malek has traveled the world through music as a Grammy-nominated vocalist with Danilo Perez’ Global Messengers; and now musically\, she’s going back to her own roots. From the American folk music and hymns of her childhood\, to the blues and jazz she studied\, Farayi brings all of the diverse sounds and experiences of her life into resonant songs that allow her effortless vocals to shine. The Salt Lick Incubator award-winner will be releasing her debut EP March 27th\, 2025. DESCRIPTION:Whose Revolution: Special Exhibition Opening Day \nMarch 28\, 2025 \nThe first of three 250th special exhibitions at the Concord Museum\, Whose Revolution will highlight the competing and contradictory meanings of revolution during the period leading up to the war. Through maps\, documents\, furniture\, and other objects\, this exhibition will explore the gradual shifts that led to broader support for independence. It will examine the experiences of Loyalists and the work of building consensus. It will also emphasize the experiences of enslaved people and Indigenous communities to examine questions of liberty\, sovereignty\, and protest during the period. Through objects and media installations\, this exhibition will feature the different meanings of revolution for the individuals living through this period\, revealing how the idea of declaring independence from England was far from inevitable and developed only gradually. \n  \nTo commemorate the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution\, the Concord Museum will offer ongoing opportunities to gather as a community\, reflect on the founding of our nation\, and engage with the significance of our shared past for our present moment. Highlights will include three new special exhibitions\, a special speaker series\, a published catalog\, and expanded educational resources. Together\, these initiatives will showcase the incredible stories behind the eyewitness objects held at the Museum to illuminate the many different ways people experienced\, shaped\, and remembered the Revolution.

DESCRIPTION:Description:  To mark 250 years since the start of the American Revolution\, CWC member Diane Taraz traces the road to rebellion with songs enjoyed by ordinary people\, especially those often overlooked\, such as women and people of color. She presents lively ballads\, serene hymns\, bold marches\, passionate laments\, and songs created by both sides to promote either independence or loyalty to the crown. Dressed in a gown of the time\, she plays authentic instruments such as lap dulcimer and an “English guitar” of the type favored by women in the 18th century. Join her for a trip back in time. Suggested donation $20.\nLISTEN to Concord250 Podcast with Diane Taraz and Jane Ring Frank\nDiane is on the Scholarly Advisory Board of the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History\, based in New York City. DESCRIPTION:The Minutemen and their World\, by Robert Gross\, revised and expanded edition \nMarch 23\, 2025 2:00 – 4:00 in the Goodwin Forum at the Concord Main Library.  In this live session Concord resident\, Robert Gross\, will be interviewed by Diane Proctor\, followed by questions from the audience. \n  \nThis book is an intensive and wide-ranging study of the community of Concord\, Massachusetts\, the city in which the famed “shot heard round the world” was fired on April 19\, 1775. Gross investigates daily life in the community at the time\, helping readers understand citizens’ (and future soldiers) daily routines\, worldview\, and even hopes and dreams as he relates their relationship to the war in which the community they called home would soon be engulfed. He looks as well at the legacy of the war in the town\, taking a brief look at its post-Revolution existence and place in American memory. Showcasing the creative energy of quilters near and far\, Quilts 250 will have 200+ quilts that visually express through fabric and thread themes related to our country’s founding and evolution and the dynamic range of quilting arts in the last 250 years. \nQuilts on Display:  \n\nAntique \nTraditional \nContemporary \nThe Spirit of 1775\nQuilts of Protest\n\nComfort Quilts\nComfort quilt programs provide free quilts\, teddy bears\, pillows\, pillowcases\, and bibs to hospitals\, shelters\, veterans’ nursing homes\, medically-supervised summer camps for children with serious illnesses\, disaster-recovery sites\, and other care centers. SUMMARY:Patriots of Color Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:Saturdays\, 1:30pm Tours \nMarch 22\, 2025 – June 30\, 2025 \nBetween twenty and forty colonists who fought along the Battle Road on April 19\, 1775\, were of African descent or Indigenous people. Although excluded from required militia service prior to the war\, these individuals of color were the first of many to take up arms between 1775 and 1783. \nBy the end of the conflict\, an estimated 5\,500 African and Indigenous  men served on the colonial side. Unfortunately\, systemic racism and historical bias have erased or buried many records of Black and Indigenous people who played a prominent role in the founding of the United States. In this 90 minute walking tour we will examine the known history and stories of these Patriots of Color who fought for freedom locally both during the American Revolution and beyond. Minuteman National Park\, Robbins House and Concord Visitors Center staff will lead this tour examining the incredible stories of individuals who risked everything during their struggle for liberty\, equality\, and freedom for all.\n\nTour meets at the North Bridge Lower Lot.  All ages are welcome. Join us at the Wright Tavern on Saturday\, March 22\, 2025 for a living history event that examines the diverse experiences of those involved in this crucial period leading up to the outbreak of war. \nSchedule of Events:\n10:00 a.m. – Site Opens\nExplore the Wright Tavern and learn about the various groups involved in intelligence networks in Massachusetts in the Spring of 1775. Meet Park Rangers and living history volunteers who examine the methods\, experiences\, and challenges of people navigating this difficult period in history. \n11:00 a.m. – “For the information of Gen. Gage:” The British Spy mission to Concord\nJoin us for an interactive program that puts you in the position of a citizen of Concord in March of 1775 when two British Army spies arrived in town. DESCRIPTION:Theodore Parker of Lexington and Ralph Waldo Emerson of Concord were directly linked to the events of April 19\, 1775. Both men’s grandfathers were involved in the battles that sparked the American Revolution. \nHow did Parker and Emerson view their revolutionary heritage? How did this shape their thinking in the turbulent years leading up to the Civil War? In this lecture\, Public Historian Richard Smith will discuss the literary and spiritual connections between the two men and their two towns. How did Parker and Emerson use their heritage to help change American literature and thought? How did this affect the Anti-slavery Movement of the 1850s? \nRichard Smith has lectured on and written about antebellum United States history and 19th-century American literature for 26 years. He has worked in Concord as a public historian and Living History Interpreter since 1999 and has written or edited 11 books for Applewood Books/Arcadia Publishing. DESCRIPTION:Long before English settlers arrived in 1635\, this land was known as Musketaquid—“the land between the grassy rivers”—and home to Indigenous peoples for over 10\,000 years. This event will explore how we can broaden our historical perspective\, moving beyond a colonial-centered narrative to one that acknowledges Indigenous history\, re-examines outdated myths\, and ensures all stories are told. \nAs we continue to learn and grow\, communities like Concord have the opportunity to lead the way in sharing a more complete and honest history. The removal of signage that overlooked the presence of Nipmuc\, Massachusett\, and Wampanoag peoples was a meaningful first step\, but there’s more work to do. In the middle of a broader conversation about race\, justice\, the mistreatment of Indigenous peoples\, and the legacy of enslavement in the United States today\, Concord must continue reckoning with its own part in that history. Join us for this important discussion on how we can honor the past while shaping a more inclusive future. \nThis event is part of the Concord Social Justice Roundtable\, a community forum that fosters discussion on how Concord can become a more welcoming\, equitable\, and inclusive community. DESCRIPTION:Concord Free Public Library Concert\, Rotunda \nPeter Sykes is one of the most distinguished and versatile keyboard artists performing today. He will be performing a harpsichord concert reflecting music in homes in the American colonial era. \nConcerts are free and open to the public\, but reservations are required. Reservations open at 9 a.m. on the Saturday two weeks before the concert. The library closes at 5 on the day of the concert\, volunteers with oversight from a library staff member prepare for the concert\, then the doors are opened for the audience at 7 p.m. Concerts are about 90 minutes long\, including a brief intermission. \nSave Date for April 5: Stephen Drury is a pianist and conductor on the faculty of the New England Conservatory. His program features Bach\, Beethoven\, and Charles Ives’s Concord Sonata. \n  \n\n  \n\n

If you can’t be with us in person\, watch online. \n“A Fight for Freedom: Honoring Patriots of Color” is a two-hour live  event dedicated to uncovering and honoring the often-overlooked contributions of Black and Indigenous patriots  both during the American Revolution and the long struggle for continued expansion of  freedom and liberty over the past 250 years. \nThis event will take place at the Umbrella Arts\, 40 Stow Street in Concord. \nIn 1775\, between 20 and 40 colonists of African and Indigenous descent fought alongside their fellow revolutionaries on the Battle Road during the opening conflict of the American Revolution. These individuals\, who had been excluded from formal militia service prior to the war\, became some of the earliest patriots to take up arms in the fight for liberty. By the end of the Revolutionary War\, approximately 5\,500  people of color had served in the Continental Army or militia\, risking their lives for the promise of freedom. \nDespite their significant role in the founding of the United States\, the stories of these patriots and their descendants  have often been erased or overshadowed by historical bias\, and their sacrifices obscured by a narrative written by others. \nBy telling their stories and honoring their service\, we not only shed light on their essential contributions but also expand our understanding of the nation’s founding. Their bravery and resilience remind us that the struggle for freedom has always been fought by people from all backgrounds and walks of life. Today\, efforts at the national and state levels—particularly in Massachusetts—are working to correct this historical oversight and honor the full spectrum of those who fought and continue to fight for liberty and equality for all people. \nProgram Highlights: \n\nHistorical Narratives: Historical interpreters guide participants through the stories of people  who fought for independence. SUMMARY:Eyewitness to Revolution with American Ancestors
DESCRIPTION:This illustrated virtual talk will focus on the stories told by objects in the Concord Museum collection about the lead-up to April 19\, 1775\, and the epochal day itself. In the aggregate\, these stories contribute forcefully to an understanding that the Revolution\, the great turn from a monarchy to a republic\, was already over well before the day the Revolutionary War began.\n\n\n\nDavid Wood\, Curator of the Concord Museum\, has served at the Museum since 1985 and provides deep knowledge of the collection and Concord history. He has overseen the development of over 40 temporary exhibitions and galleries. He is the author of numerous scholarly articles and publications\, including the award-winning An Observant Eye: The Thoreau Collection at the Concord Museum and Eyewitness to Revolution: The American Revolution Collection at the Concord Museum. \n\n\n\n\n\nHosted by American Ancestors. Forums for the 250th Anniversary of the American Revolution are made possible by a gift from Claire and Joshua Nelson.
