SUMMARY:Open Books: Linocut Bookplate Workshop
DESCRIPTION:190 years ago\, while sitting in the upstairs study of the Old Manse\, Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote in Nature that “the world shall be to us an open book.” His words set the stage for many literary greats who lived and visited at the Old Manse\, and who took inspiration from the landscape surrounding it. \nJoin us for a special linocut workshop under the tent and celebrate the intersections of literature and the natural world by creating your own bespoke bookplate to adorn your ever-growing library! Bookplates\, labels used to identify the owner of a particular book\, became popular in the nineteenth century and often featured elaborate\, personalized illustrations along with the owner’s name. We’ll take some time to draw inspiration from the grounds and gardens of the Old Manse before creating and printing our own unique designs! \nThis activity involves sharp carving tools and is recommended for those aged 12 and up. Pre-Registration for this program is required. Ticket cost covers all materials needed for the activity. \nCancellation Policy: In the event The Trustees cancels a program due to severe weather\, low enrollment\, or other circumstances\, we will notify registrants by email and issue a full refund or transfer to another scheduled program within two weeks of the cancellation. To cancel a reservation\, please contact the Old Manse 7 days prior to the start of the program to receive a full refund. DESCRIPTION:Visiting Artist Workshop with Yeonsoo Kim \n“Breathing Volume: Traditional Onggi and Buncheong Expression”\nSaturday\, August 15 (demonstration only) & Sunday\, August 16 (hands-on workshop) | 10 AM – 4 PM\nCost: Saturday only: $75 | Saturday & Sunday: $165 \nJoin us for a weekend workshop with visiting artist Yeonsoo Kim as he guides participants through the history of traditional Korean earthenware Onggi vessels\, their production and significance\, and how he incorporates these functional jars into expressive contemporary narratives. Kim will demonstrate the unique coil construction methods of Onggi pots and share the vibrant surface decoration techniques that illustrate his work. \nSaturday is a demonstration only that will focus on the “Breathing Volume” of Onggi. Following an artist talk on the history of Korean earthenware\, Kim will demonstrate the traditional “Tarae-ssaki” (coiling) and “Su-re-jil” (paddling) methods. Participants will see how rhythmic paddling creates structural integrity and dynamic volume in large-scale vessels. Saturday registration is open to all; no experience necessary. \nSunday is a hands-on workshop dedicated to the traditional Buncheong techniques of Sanggam (inlay) and Bakji (sgraffito). Participants will learn how to apply white slip over a darker clay body to create high-contrast imagery. Practicing on their own vessels and small demonstration tiles\, participants will explore how to carve out negative space (Bakji) and inlay fine lines (Sanggam) to translate personal narratives onto the clay surface. Sunday registration requires Saturday participation. Participants are encouraged to bring a leather-hard vessel to decorate; Umbrella will provide tiles for practice. Some ceramics experience recommended. \nAbout Yeonsoo: Yeonsoo Kim is a South Korean ceramic artist currently based in the United States. His work has received national and international recognition\, including being named one of NCECA’s Emerging Artists of 2020. Most recently\, he was honored with Best in Show at the 2025 Smithsonian Craft Show and was distinguished as the Featured Artist and Best in Show winner at Richmond Art and Design (2025).  \nHe has participated in prestigious residencies at the Archie Bray Foundation\, where he was awarded the Matsutani Fellowship and the Etchart-Sartre Fellowship. His residency experience also includes the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft and the Korea Ceramic Foundation. Kim’s practice continues to explore the profound dialogue between tradition and contemporary form\, focusing on the evocative “breathing volume” and the visceral presence of clay.

DESCRIPTION:Award-winning Firelight Theatre Workshop presents We Were Friends: To Bed/Eggs\, an episodic project of Firelight’s playful reimagining of Margaret Fuller and Ralph Waldo Emerson’s profound friendship set in today’s world. A late-night phone conversation between Ralph and Margaret takes the form of a radio play in which music\, film\, voice\, and the hypnotic hum of a sleep apnea machine lead the two friends into territory both more intimate and less certain than any they’ve experienced in each other’s presence. This episode will be followed by a talkback with Firelight’s actors and writers.

DESCRIPTION:SUMMER CERAMICS: Wheel Fundamentals \nMondays\, July 6 – August 10\, 6 – 9 PM (6 weeks) \nAge range: Adult \nCost: $405 \nInstructor: Kyle Johns \n  \nThis course is designed for those who would like to gain a basic understanding of the fundamentals of wheel throwing as well as for those with experience who want to build new skills and strengthen their throwing technique. This class will cover many technical and aesthetic concerns of working with clay. Demonstrations and projects will be made accessible for new students and scalable for those with more experience. Beginners will be introduced to clay by learning the fundamentals of working on a potter’s wheel and the basics of hand-building techniques. For students with experience in the basics of wheel throwing\, more specific projects and challenges will be offered as will the option to develop projects independently. This class is suitable for all skill levels. \n  \nAbout the instructor: Widely exhibited and published artist and teacher\, Kyle Johns was a Ceramics Artist-in-Residence at The Umbrella Arts Center and currently is the Ceramics Studio Technician. With an MFA from Ohio University\, Kyle has been a resident at Red Lodge Clay Center\, The Interdisciplinary Ceramics Research Center\, The Archie Bray Foundation\, and The International Ceramics Center in Kecskemet\, Hungary. He has taught at Kansas State University\, Massachusetts College of Art and Design\, and the Ceramics Program at Harvard University.

DESCRIPTION:Join Concord Fife and Drum as they bring to life the sounds and songs of the American Revolution! \nMusic had an important role to play in the Revolutionary war\, from keeping spirits up to helping direct soldiers on the battlefield. To celebrate the Fourth of July\, and the 250th anniversary of our country’s independence\, members of Concord Fife and Drum will join us under the Old Manse tent to share some of the music that was heard in New England throughout the Revolutionary War\, including songs heard at the Battle of the North Bridge. \nWhile this program is free for all\, advanced registration is suggested. \nThis program does not include admission to the historic house. If you would like to take a tour of the house and learn more about how one family was impacted by the Revolution\, tickets can be purchased here. \nCancellation Policy: In the event The Trustees cancels a program due to severe weather\, low enrollment\, or other circumstances\, we will notify registrants by email and issue a full refund or transfer to another scheduled program within two weeks of the cancellation. To cancel a reservation\, please contact the Old Manse 7 days prior to the start of the program to receive a full refund. DESCRIPTION:The Concord Museum\, in partnership with Lexington History Museums\, presents an engaging program highlighting new research and evolving interpretations from the communities at the center of the start of the American Revolution. This conversation brings together Curator David F. Wood\, whose work Eyewitness to Revolution draws from the Concord Museum’s renowned collection; Paul O’Shaughnessy\, President of Lexington History Museums whose institution recently published Revolutionary Stories; and historian and archaeologist Joel Bohy. \nAs part of the evening\, the Concord Museum will present the Robert A.
