SUMMARY:One-Day Choir with Kenter Davies at the Armory
DESCRIPTION:Join friends and neighbors in this one of a kind collective choral event! Led and arranged by beloved NYC music leader Kenter Davies (who grew up in Sudbury!)\, we’ll explore harmony\, free our voices\, and build community through the song “What a Wonderful World” by Louis Armstrong. There’s no auditions\, no experience necessary\, and no seeking of perfection\, We’ll just be making music for music-making’s sake! \nA timeless classic about the beauty of the natural world and the kindness we can afford one another as humans\, “What a Wonderful World” feels more important than ever to sing. We’ll explore a choral arrangement of the tune featuring lush\, jazzy harmonies. \nDuring our time together we will: \n○ Play singing games to activate our voices\, bodies\, and connection to one another \n○ Work through the song section by section\, infusing some musicality as we go \n○ Discuss the lyrics of the song and what meaning we can find in it \n○ Sing through the song a bunch and explore the different journeys it may take us on! \nA week prior to the event\, you’ll receive the sheet music and vocal demos arrangement of the song to use as a resource. You don’t have to be able to read sheet music\, you can absolutely learn by ear! We encourage folks to arrive familiar with the arrangement\, but there’s no pressure to learn everything in advance. We’ll fill in the gaps for one another as we explore and play along the way! \nWright Tavern Sing is a program sponsored by the Wright Tavern Legacy Trust. We bring communal music events to Concord that are accessible\, joyful\, and bring a sense of belonging and connection to the greater village. DESCRIPTION:Documentarian Ken Burns will visit Concord on April 17 to discuss his new film\, “The American Revolution\,” timed to the start of the War of Independence on April 19\, 1775. Burns will be joined by co-directors Sarah Botstein and David Schmidt and historian Rick Atkinson\, author of “The British Are Coming\,” from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Concord-Carlisle High School. Following approximately 40 minutes of clips\, the filmmakers and Atkinson will join in a conversation about the film and the meaning of events at Lexington and Concord that led to the American Revolution.\n\nThe event will be open to the general public (tickets by lottery system\, through CFPL)\, with reserved seating for Arlington\, Concord\, Lexington\, and Lincoln residents and students. \nThe Concord Free Public Library announced: Ken Burns event lottery is now live and will remain open until Friday\, March 28 at 4 PM. Watercolor paintings depicting scenes of five battles appear alongside photographs of sites involved in each battle.As the first armed conflicts of the American Revolution\, the Battle of Lexington and Concord ignited outrage in Massachusetts and showed the potential of citizen soldiers\, relying on local organizing and knowledge of their home terrain\, to confront the highly trained and professional British military. \nFought primarily on Breed’s Hill just outside Boston\, the Battle of Bunker Hill was an early demonstration of American tenacity. Although the battle was a tactical loss for the Americans\, heavy casualties forced the stunned British to rethink their strategy for the long war to come. \nNotable for the victory that followed George Washington’s risky and audacious crossing of the Delaware River from Pennsylvania into New Jersey\, the Battle of Trenton highlighted Washington’s ability to see opportunity in desperate times\, rally his army\, and save the revolutionary cause. \nIn New York\, the Battles of Saratoga halted a determined British campaign to divide the Colonies. American resolve at Freeman’s Farm and Bemis Heights drew international support that ultimately secured independence. \nAs the last major land battle of the Revolutionary War\, the Battle of Yorktown involved a weekslong American siege of this Virginia city and prompted a British surrender\, a testimony to both the strategic leadership of George Washington and the essential support of the French. \nDerry Noyes\, an art director for USPS\, designed the stamps\, with illustrations by Greg Harlin and photographs by Jon Bilous\, Richard Lewis\, Tom Morris\, Gregory J. Parker and Kevin Stewart. \nThe Battlefields of the American Revolution stamps are being issued as Forever stamps and will always be equal in value to the current First-Class Mail one-ounce rate.

DESCRIPTION:Exhibition: April 14 – June 14\, 2025 \nOpening Reception  April 14\, 6PM \n  \nThe Umbrella Arts Center in historic Concord Center will commemorate the semiquincentennial of the American Revolution and “the shot heard round the world” with an ambitious outdoor/indoor public and gallery art exhibition\, Weaving an Address\, curated by artist Marla McLeod. \n  \nFor the first time\, Weaving an Address combines The Umbrella’s popular Art Ramble public art installation\, on view April 15 through October 7 at Brister’s Hill in nearby Walden Woods\, with an indoor exhibition on view April 14 through June 14 in The Umbrella’s Allie Kussin Gallery. The exhibition features site-specific work by eight prominent Black artists combining sculpture\, fiber art\, installation and live performance inspired by little-known experiences of historical Black inhabitants of Concord and its Walden Woods. \n  \nFeatured artists in the exhibition are Ifé Franklin\, Stephen Hamilton\, Whitney Harris\, Ekua Holmes\, Perla Mabel\, Marla McLeod\, Kimberly Love Radcliffe\, and Anthony Peyton Young. \n  \nOutdoors\, large-scale work will be installed on Brister’s Hill\, named for Brister Freeman\, an enslaved man who won his freedom by serving in the Revolutionary War and then bought the property and lived there along with other formerly enslaved.Indoors at The Umbrella\, inter-related fiber artworks will weave narratives from fragmented pasts to offer a vision of how history shapes the present and influences the future. \n  \nSupporting community activities include an opening reception on April 14\, monthly curator talks\, a processional with artist Ifé Franklin\, and participation in the town-wide Revolutionary Concordians Trading Card program. \n  \nThis exhibition is presented as part of the Concord250 commemoration\, in partnership with The Walden Woods Project and The Robbins House\, in association with Gather 2025\, a month-long exploration and celebration of fiber and textile art in Greater Boston\, and with permission of Concord Natural Resources Division. \n  \nSee https://TheUmbrellaArts.org/Weaving for more information about special engagements\, wayfinding\, artist bios\, and background to the exhibition. \n  \nACCESS: The Umbrella is wheelchair accessible\, with ADA parking and marked all-gender bathrooms available. SUMMARY:"Weaving an Address" - Opening Spring 2025
DESCRIPTION:Spring 2025 – Fall 2025 \n“Weaving an Address” \nThe exhibition is planned for The Brister Hill Loop\, part of the forest named for Brister Freeman\, an enslaved man who won his freedom by serving in the Revolutionary War and then bought property in Walden Woods and lived there along with other formerly enslaved. This area holds the untold stories of people who etched out their lives in an area inhospitable to growth. The exhibit intends to be a historically informed temporary outdoor installation in this area to remember those whose lives remain unmarked to express the importance and fullness of history that exists within the background of this historical site. \n  \nThis project is part of The Umbrella Arts Center’s long standing Art Ramble tradition\, but is extended this year because of the 250 celebration. Viewers will walk a trail that has one monument to Brister Freeman and is otherwise named Thoreau’s trail where quotes accompany you throughout. Between 10 and 12 works will be dispersed and placed along a marked path leading to the Reflection Circle. \n  \nThe participating artists will pull their inspiration from the research and information provided about Walden Woods with the primary source of research being the book Black Walden: Slavery and Its Aftermath in Concord\, Massachusetts by Elise Lemire. \n  \nThe site-specific exhibition will be a combination of sculpture\, installation and live performance inspired by the inhabitants of these woods to evoke their presence and to express the experiences of their lives within the space. Many of the artists will also have work in a show that will be being held concurrently in the Allie Kussin Gallery at The Umbrella Arts Center.

DESCRIPTION:Saturdays\, 1:30pm Tours \nMarch 22\, 2025 – June 30\, 2025 \nBetween twenty and forty colonists who fought along the Battle Road on April 19\, 1775\, were of African descent or Indigenous people. Although excluded from required militia service prior to the war\, these individuals of color were the first of many to take up arms between 1775 and 1783. \nBy the end of the conflict\, an estimated 5\,500 African and Indigenous  men served on the colonial side. Unfortunately\, systemic racism and historical bias have erased or buried many records of Black and Indigenous people who played a prominent role in the founding of the United States. In this 90 minute walking tour we will examine the known history and stories of these Patriots of Color who fought for freedom locally both during the American Revolution and beyond. Minuteman National Park\, Robbins House and Concord Visitors Center staff will lead this tour examining the incredible stories of individuals who risked everything during their struggle for liberty\, equality\, and freedom for all.\n\nTour meets at the North Bridge Lower Lot.  All ages are welcome. DESCRIPTION:Concord Band Performs Revolutionary Music\nThe Concord Band will present its spirited Spring Pops! concert on Friday\, April 11\, 2025\, at 51 Walden Performing Arts Center. The program commemorates the 250th anniversary of the Battles of Lexington and Concord as part of Concord250 festivities this year throughout the town of Concord. The concert features two compositions specially commissioned to honor the historic events of April 19\, 1775. \nNorth Bridge Portrait by noted composer and arranger Stephen Bulla was commissioned by the Concord Band. The composition builds on foreboding melodies leading to martial themes\, culminating in the fateful “shot heard ’round the world” at Concord’s North Bridge. The program also features Seeds of Revolution\, recently commissioned by the Lexington Bicentennial Band and composed by Daniel Lutz\, Director of University Bands at UMass Lowell. Seeds of Revolution depicts unfolding events and growing sentiments in Massachusetts leading up to April 19\, 1775. The performance continues with a march representing both historic towns\, aptly titled Concord and Lexington\, written by George Briggs\, former band director at Harvard University. The Concord250 program concludes with Concord\, composed for the U.S. Marine Band by Clare Grundman\, incorporating traditional tunes from colonial New England\, “The White Cockade\,” William Billings’ “America\,” and “Yankee Doodle.” Grundman noted that “Yankee Doodle” was a very popular tune for jigs and country dances\, but for Concord he used 7/8 time for an exuberant and clever ending. \nMusic Director James O’Dell has also selected twenty-first century music representing the digital revolution\, drawn from video games and superhero movies. Epic Gaming Themes by Paul Murtha elevates classic video game soundtracks to the stature of film scores. Video Games Live\, by Marty O’Donnell\, includes excerpts from a Hollywood concert phenomenon celebrating music from video games that toured around the world from 2005 through 2015. This composition will be conducted by Concord Band clarinetist Jim Dorney\, who studied conducting at SUNY Geneseo. The Concord Band will perform Soundtrack Highlights from Guardians of the Galaxy\, arranged for band by Michael Brown. The powerful soundtrack is based on popular hits of the 1960s and 1970s\, which the film’s protagonist plays to remind him of his former life on Earth. \nTickets to the Spring Pops concert are $25 for adults and $10 for children 12 and under. DESCRIPTION:Goodwin ForumMain Library129 Main Street\, Concord\, MA\, 01742 \n\n\nMichael D. Hattem\, Historian of the American Revolution and Historical Memory\, will speak about the importance of the memory of the Revolution\, specifically on how events in Concord have been perceived nationally. \n  \nBio: Michael D. Hattem is a historian of the American Revolution and popular memory. He is the author of The Memory of ’76: The Revolution in American History (2024) and Past and Prologue: Politics and Memory in the American Revolution (2020). He has worked as a consultant on historical documentaries\, including appearing in Discovery Networks’ “American Revolution.” His work has been featured and mentioned in The New York Times\, TIME magazine\, The Smithsonian Magazine\, the Washington Post\, and many other mainstream media publications and outlets. He has also served as a historical consultant to multiple museums\, curated historical exhibitions\, and authenticated and written catalog essays for historical document auctions.

SUMMARY:Patriots of Color Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:Saturdays\, 1:30pm Tours \nMarch 22\, 2025 – June 30\, 2025 \nBetween twenty and forty colonists who fought along the Battle Road on April 19\, 1775\, were of African descent or Indigenous people. Although excluded from required militia service prior to the war\, these individuals of color were the first of many to take up arms between 1775 and 1783. \nBy the end of the conflict\, an estimated 5\,500 African and Indigenous  men served on the colonial side. Unfortunately\, systemic racism and historical bias have erased or buried many records of Black and Indigenous people who played a prominent role in the founding of the United States. In this 90 minute walking tour we will examine the known history and stories of these Patriots of Color who fought for freedom locally both during the American Revolution and beyond. Minuteman National Park\, Robbins House and Concord Visitors Center staff will lead this tour examining the incredible stories of individuals who risked everything during their struggle for liberty\, equality\, and freedom for all.\n\nTour meets at the North Bridge Lower Lot.  All ages are welcome. SUMMARY:A Celebration Heard ‘Round the World – An Exhibition presented by the William Munroe Special Collections
DESCRIPTION:The exhibition features selections from the William Munroe Special Collections and the Town Archives\, including art\, photographs\, broadsides\, Town records\, and ephemera that explore how Concordians have celebrated the anniversary of the Battle of Concord\, or the “Concord Fight\,” on April 19\, 1775. Learn how celebrations have combined public interest and trends with historical commemoration and how these events have evolved. While mainstay traditions like parades\, invited speakers\, balls\, and re-enactments have prevailed and changed\, new traditions have also been introduced\, reflecting the community’s diverse interests. \nIn addition\, on the First Floor of the Main Library\, selections from the Town Archives and the William Munroe Special Collections offer a rich cache of manuscript and printed primary source materials providing insight into events leading up to\, on\, and following April 19\, 1775. Many of these documents offer small glimpses into the Concord Fight’s human impact and the American Revolution’s beginnings. Using these items\, we highlight the actions of soldiers\, Patriots of Color\, and women to tell a more complete story about the Concord Fight and the people who lived it.
