SUMMARY:Concord250 Event: Umbrella Arts: "Where We Belong"
DESCRIPTION:Indigenous Theater-Maker’s Journey Grapples with Geographic Borders and\nCultural Legacies in a Universal Search for Belonging \nFebruary 28- March 23\, 2025 TICKETS \nUmbrella Arts\, Black Box Theater \nBy Madeline Sayet\, Directed by Tara Moses \nThe Umbrella Stage Company is thrilled to mount the New England Premiere of Mohegan theatre-maker Madeline Sayet’s ground-breaking one-woman show\, Where We Belong.\nPerformed for the first time by an artist other than Sayet herself\, it is helmed by fellow\nIndigenous director and playwright Tara Moses and stars GiGi Buddie. This brand new staging in\nConcord\, MA during the Semiquincentennial of the beginning of the American Revolution raises\ntimely questions of whose histories are told\, how\, by whom\, and in what language. \nWith great humor\, insight\, and imaginative storytelling\, the autobiographical play weaves\ntogether Indigenous history\, Shakespeare\, cultural legacy\, the power of language\, and legend. It\nrecounts Sayet’s 2015 journey to England to pursue a PhD in Shakespeare in the shadow of the\nBrexit vote. Moving between nations that have failed to reckon with their ongoing roles in\ncolonialism\, she grapples with what it means to remain or leave her own home as a Mohegan\,\nbut discovers comfort in mirroring the footsteps of her ancestors who traveled to England in the\n1700s. \n“Madeline’s story is uniquely personal\, but universally relatable. Following the completion of\nthe original tour with Madeline at the center\,” says Brian Boruta\, Umbrella Stage Producing\nArtistic Director\, “we wanted to explore how the play could evolve\, be adapted for other\nperformers\, and reveal a continuing relevance for future productions and new audiences. Sayet\noriginally developed the play in partnership with Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company in\nassociation with The Folger Shakespeare Library\, and is engaged with the Umbrella team on this\nnext evolution. \nThe show runs Feb. 28-Mar. 23 (press opening Sunday Mar. 2\, 3:00PM)\, including a special\nStudent Group Matinee Wed. Mar. 12 at 4PM\, and select performances will feature engagement\nopportunities.\n● Dinner & A Show packages are available for all Thursday night performances\n● Talk Backs scheduled following performances on March 12\, 16 and 20\n● Childcare with art activities for youth ages 5-12 is available through The Umbrella’s Kid\nCare program for parents interested in attending the March 16 matinee\nPlanned community engagement activities will also highlight art and experiences of Concord’s\nnative Nipmuc and Massachusett tribes\, including a concurrent gallery exhibition of work by\nNipmuc photographer Scott Strong Hawk Foster.\nThe Umbrella is ADA accessible\, a proud partner in the Massachusetts Cultural Council’s EBT\nCard-to-Culture program\, and provides free parking and free admission to its visual arts\ngalleries. See https://TheUmbrellaArts.org/WWB for more information. \nSpecial Note to Press: We ask our friends in the press to please respect the request to avoid\nreproducing Mohegan language words in their coverage\, including those in the script\, as this is a\nlanguage under active reconstruction and reclamation. \n  \nABOUT MADELINE SAYET\nMadeline Sayet is a member of the Mohegan Tribe in Connecticut\, where she was raised on a\ncombination of traditional Mohegan stories and Shakespeare. Both of which have influenced\nher work as a playwright and director.\nShe has been named a Forbes 30 Under 30 in Hollywood & Entertainment\, a NCAIED Native\nAmerican 40 Under 40\, a TED Fellow\, MIT Media Lab Director’s Fellow\, and a recipient of the\nWhite House Champion of Change Award from President Obama. She is the Executive Director\nof the Yale Indigenous Performing Arts Program (YIPAP). Her directorial work has been\ndescribed by critics as effervescent\, enchanting\, magical\, insightful\, and fearless. As a performer\nshe was nominated for a Jeff Award for best Solo Performance for her run of Where We Belong\nat The Goodman Theatre.\nABOUT TARA MOSES\nTara Moses is a director\, multi award-winning playwright\, co-Founder of Groundwater Arts\, and\na citizen of the Seminole Nation of Oklahoma.\nAs a director\, her work has been seen in Santa Fe\, NM; Kansas City\, MO; Boston\, MA; San\nFrancisco\, CA; Kyle\, SD; Vermillion\, SD; Providence\, RI; Seattle\, WA; New York\, NY; Tulsa\, OK;\nWashington\, D.C.; Bethesda\, MD; Oklahoma City\, OK; Palmetto\, GA; Edmond\, OK; and Hartford\,\nCT. SUMMARY:Portraits in Red: Missing & Murdered Indigenous Painting Project
DESCRIPTION:The MMIP Painting Project began not as a project at all but with the intent of it being just one painting to show support for the Missing & Murdered indigenous peoples crisis. Artist Nayana laFond created the first painting on May 5\, 2020\, the day of remembrance for MMIP. She shared it ontine and the response was so overwhelming she did one more\, yet again intending that to be the end. The response to the second was even more and so Nayana opened her inbox to anyone wanting to be painted not expecting the 25+ the received the first day.Stories and images of loved ones missing\, murdered\, survivors and advocates/activists. It was then that it became a project when Nayana decided to paint them all and they didn’t stop coming. As of February 2024 there is now 110 completed paintings and a constant queue. \nThe paintings are done in black and white with red being the only color visible because many indigenous groups believe red is the only color spirits can see. The hand over the mouths symbolizes being silenced. \nNayana  is a domestic violence survivor and feels compelled to do this work to raise awareness and promote change and healing. The paintings are done for free and Nayana does not profit monetarily  from the creation or sale of these works. She donates any profits to the National Indigenous Women’s Resource Center (NIWRC.org). In lieu of taking monetary donations\, she asks people to donate to any of the many organizations working with families and toward change.
