DESCRIPTION:Indigenous Theater-Maker’s Journey Grapples with Geographic Borders and\nCultural Legacies in a Universal Search for Belonging \nFebruary 28- March 23\, 2025 TICKETS \nUmbrella Arts\, Black Box Theater \nBy Madeline Sayet\, Directed by Tara Moses \nThe Umbrella Stage Company is thrilled to mount the New England Premiere of Mohegan theatre-maker Madeline Sayet’s ground-breaking one-woman show\, Where We Belong.\nPerformed for the first time by an artist other than Sayet herself\, it is helmed by fellow\nIndigenous director and playwright Tara Moses and stars GiGi Buddie. This brand new staging in\nConcord\, MA during the Semiquincentennial of the beginning of the American Revolution raises\ntimely questions of whose histories are told\, how\, by whom\, and in what language. \nWith great humor\, insight\, and imaginative storytelling\, the autobiographical play weaves\ntogether Indigenous history\, Shakespeare\, cultural legacy\, the power of language\, and legend. It\nrecounts Sayet’s 2015 journey to England to pursue a PhD in Shakespeare in the shadow of the\nBrexit vote. Moving between nations that have failed to reckon with their ongoing roles in\ncolonialism\, she grapples with what it means to remain or leave her own home as a Mohegan\,\nbut discovers comfort in mirroring the footsteps of her ancestors who traveled to England in the\n1700s. \n“Madeline’s story is uniquely personal\, but universally relatable. Following the completion of\nthe original tour with Madeline at the center\,” says Brian Boruta\, Umbrella Stage Producing\nArtistic Director\, “we wanted to explore how the play could evolve\, be adapted for other\nperformers\, and reveal a continuing relevance for future productions and new audiences. Sayet\noriginally developed the play in partnership with Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company in\nassociation with The Folger Shakespeare Library\, and is engaged with the Umbrella team on this\nnext evolution. \nThe show runs Feb. 28-Mar. 23 (press opening Sunday Mar. 2\, 3:00PM)\, including a special\nStudent Group Matinee Wed. SUMMARY:Abundant Heresies: The Revolutions of Theodore Parker and Ralph Waldo Emerson - with Richard Smith
DESCRIPTION:Theodore Parker of Lexington and Ralph Waldo Emerson of Concord were directly linked to the events of April 19\, 1775. Both men’s grandfathers were involved in the battles that sparked the American Revolution. \nHow did Parker and Emerson view their revolutionary heritage? How did this shape their thinking in the turbulent years leading up to the Civil War? In this lecture\, Public Historian Richard Smith will discuss the literary and spiritual connections between the two men and their two towns. How did Parker and Emerson use their heritage to help change American literature and thought? How did this affect the Anti-slavery Movement of the 1850s? \nRichard Smith has lectured on and written about antebellum United States history and 19th-century American literature for 26 years. He has worked in Concord as a public historian and Living History Interpreter since 1999 and has written or edited 11 books for Applewood Books/Arcadia Publishing. The Provincial Congress organized a network of intelligence to monitor the British Army and the military supplies throughout the province. Aware of the rebel operations\, the British Army conducted military intelligence missions into the Massachusetts countryside. These efforts would see moments of intrigue\, strife\, and unexpected voices playing an important role in what was to come. Join us at the Wright Tavern on Saturday\, March 22\, 2025 for a living history event that examines the diverse experiences of those involved in this crucial period leading up to the outbreak of war. \nSchedule of Events:\n10:00 a.m. – Site Opens\nExplore the Wright Tavern and learn about the various groups involved in intelligence networks in Massachusetts in the Spring of 1775. Meet Park Rangers and living history volunteers who examine the methods\, experiences\, and challenges of people navigating this difficult period in history. \n11:00 a.m. – “For the information of Gen. Gage:” The British Spy mission to Concord\nJoin us for an interactive program that puts you in the position of a citizen of Concord in March of 1775 when two British Army spies arrived in town. Park Ranger Thompson Dasher will talk about the experiences of these two officers as well as how their visit impacted the community. \n2:00 p.m. – “Merchants and Mechanicks:” The revolutionary Intelligence Network in Massachusetts\nJoin Park Rangers Jane Barnes and Bob Marchetta to learn about the diverse groups of people involved in the spread of information in 1775. SUMMARY:Patriots of Color Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:Saturdays\, 1:30pm Tours \nMarch 22\, 2025 – June 30\, 2025 \nBetween twenty and forty colonists who fought along the Battle Road on April 19\, 1775\, were of African descent or Indigenous people. Although excluded from required militia service prior to the war\, these individuals of color were the first of many to take up arms between 1775 and 1783. \nBy the end of the conflict\, an estimated 5\,500 African and Indigenous  men served on the colonial side. Unfortunately\, systemic racism and historical bias have erased or buried many records of Black and Indigenous people who played a prominent role in the founding of the United States. In this 90 minute walking tour we will examine the known history and stories of these Patriots of Color who fought for freedom locally both during the American Revolution and beyond. Minuteman National Park\, Robbins House and Concord Visitors Center staff will lead this tour examining the incredible stories of individuals who risked everything during their struggle for liberty\, equality\, and freedom for all.\n\nTour meets at the North Bridge Lower Lot.  All ages are welcome. DESCRIPTION:Description:  To mark 250 years since the start of the American Revolution\, CWC member Diane Taraz traces the road to rebellion with songs enjoyed by ordinary people\, especially those often overlooked\, such as women and people of color. She presents lively ballads\, serene hymns\, bold marches\, passionate laments\, and songs created by both sides to promote either independence or loyalty to the crown. Dressed in a gown of the time\, she plays authentic instruments such as lap dulcimer and an “English guitar” of the type favored by women in the 18th century. Join her for a trip back in time.
