DESCRIPTION:The documentary reveals a long-suppressed secret\, set in Concord\, Massachusetts—the birthplace of the American Revolution\, where the first shots were fired on April 19\, 1775. While Concord is often celebrated for its role in the fight for freedom\, few are aware of the untold stories that extend beyond its borders. The film also explores hidden narratives from both Medford and Harvard University\, offering a richer\, more complete picture of the region’s colonial past. The premiere will take place in Concord on April 12\, 2025\, followed by distribution to over 500 PBS member stations across the United States via PBS+. SUMMARY:Patriots of Color Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:Saturdays\, 1:30pm Tours \nMarch 22\, 2025 – June 30\, 2025 \nBetween twenty and forty colonists who fought along the Battle Road on April 19\, 1775\, were of African descent or Indigenous people. Although excluded from required militia service prior to the war\, these individuals of color were the first of many to take up arms between 1775 and 1783. \nBy the end of the conflict\, an estimated 5\,500 African and Indigenous  men served on the colonial side. Unfortunately\, systemic racism and historical bias have erased or buried many records of Black and Indigenous people who played a prominent role in the founding of the United States. In this 90 minute walking tour we will examine the known history and stories of these Patriots of Color who fought for freedom locally both during the American Revolution and beyond. Minuteman National Park\, Robbins House and Concord Visitors Center staff will lead this tour examining the incredible stories of individuals who risked everything during their struggle for liberty\, equality\, and freedom for all.\n\nTour meets at the North Bridge Lower Lot.  All ages are welcome. DESCRIPTION:Join us on Thursday April 3rd at 5:30pm for the opening reception of our upcoming exhibition\, “ Liberation Textiles: Our Social Fabric\, ” curated by Elizabeth Thach and Camilø Álvårez. \nThe show is centered around themes of individual freedom and primarily features fiber-based visual art. Programming for the exhibition also includes a Curators Tour on Thursday April 3rd at 5pm\, as well as Artist Demos with some of the exhibition’s featured artists. The show is on view April 3 – May 11\, 2025. \n\n\n\nCurators Tour Thursday April 3rd at 5pm (opening reception starts at 5:30pm that evening)\nArtist Demo: A Sense of Touch – Tapestry Weaving with Sam Fields Wednesday\, April 16th\, 10:30am-12pm\nThe show is centered around themes of individual freedom and is scheduled to coincide with the town’s celebration of Patriots Day. It will primarily feature fiber-based visual art. To give you a sense of the creative direction\, here’s an excerpt from what the curator has written about the show:\n\n\n“When we talk about ‘social fabric’ the metaphor is apt because of the various ways that individual lives overlap [like threads] and are supported by other lives to create a unified garment… We participate in elections\, but we also participate in economic systems\, familial networks\, and larger social communities. Communal life is always a negotiation between individual freedom and the needs of the social fabric that supports and makes individual freedom possible… Making art is one of the purest expressions of personal freedom that the individual can participate in\, but the work that artists make as individuals is influenced by artists’ economic\, cultural\, and communal realities… Communities support and participate in the individual’s freedom when they view the art that individuals make. It is a critical mistake to think that art can exist in a vacuum\, or that individuals can be free without the supports and infrastructure of a healthy community.”

DESCRIPTION:MARCH 29 @ 8:00PM and March 30 @ 2:30PM \nThe Concord Orchestra\, conducted by Music Director Zeke Fetrow\, is thrilled to perform “American Heritage” concerts as part of the Concord250 celebration.  Performances are on Saturday\, March 29 at 8:00 p.m. and Sunday\, March 30 at 2:30 p.m. at the Performing Arts Center at 51 Walden.  We are excited to present a world premiere of A Beacon of Hope by Jeff Beal\, commissioned by the orchestra for the celebration!  Jeff Beal\, the composer of the new work\, is an Emmy-winning composer of soundtracks for films and television. \nOther American compositions on the program are Florence Price’s brilliant Symphony No. 3\, Leonard Bernstein’s festive Candide Overture\, and The Liberty Bell March by John Phillip Sousa. \nWe look forward to performing with Richard Sebring\, principal horn of the Boston Symphony Orchestra\, playing Mozart’s Horn Concerto No. 3 and his own short work composed for the occasion\, The White Cockade. Richard Sebring remarks\, “It’s always a great pleasure to make music with my friends in the Concord Orchestra\, especially in 51 Walden\, the site of many artistic experiences in my youth. And I look forward to collaborating with Zeke Fetrow\, who will bring unbridled energy to these performances.” \nFlorence Price\, a 1906 graduate of New England Conservatory\, was the first African-American woman to be recognized as a symphonic composer. Her expressive Symphony No. 3 \, written in 1938 and 1939\, includes melodies inspired by spirituals and a dance called a juba that was brought to the southern United States by African slaves.  Its premiere was in 1940\, but it was neglected until it was performed again in 2001.  It remained unpublished until 2008\, and it was not until recently that it was re-discovered and played more frequently. \nDr. Sam Woodhead\, trombone soloist of The U.S. Army Band “Pershing’s Own” Concert Band\, will lead a workshop on Sousa performance for musicians in the orchestra. Pre-concert discussions by Zeke Fetrow and other musicians involved in the performance are planned for Saturday at 7:00 p.m. and Sunday at 1:30 p.m. \nTickets for adults and seniors are $25. SUMMARY:Patriots of Color Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:Saturdays\, 1:30pm Tours \nMarch 22\, 2025 – June 30\, 2025 \nBetween twenty and forty colonists who fought along the Battle Road on April 19\, 1775\, were of African descent or Indigenous people. Although excluded from required militia service prior to the war\, these individuals of color were the first of many to take up arms between 1775 and 1783. \nBy the end of the conflict\, an estimated 5\,500 African and Indigenous  men served on the colonial side. Unfortunately\, systemic racism and historical bias have erased or buried many records of Black and Indigenous people who played a prominent role in the founding of the United States. In this 90 minute walking tour we will examine the known history and stories of these Patriots of Color who fought for freedom locally both during the American Revolution and beyond. Minuteman National Park\, Robbins House and Concord Visitors Center staff will lead this tour examining the incredible stories of individuals who risked everything during their struggle for liberty\, equality\, and freedom for all.\n\nTour meets at the North Bridge Lower Lot.  All ages are welcome. DESCRIPTION:  \nMeet at the Concord Town House to celebrate an auspicious moment in our history:  March 29th marks 145 years to the day that Louisa May Alcott\, famed authoress of Little Women and hundreds of other literary works\, became the first woman of Concord to cast a vote in a Town election! \nJoin in the excitement within the very room in the Town House where voting took place\, support the brave band of 19 other women who also voted for School Committee on that triumphant day\, and revel in the newfound empowerment these women achieved by actively participating in democracy as never before! \n  \nLeading the march to the ballot box will be Jan Turnquist – Executive Director of Louisa May Alcott’s Orchard House\, world-renowned Living History portrayer of Miss Alcott\, and a Concord resident – who will also speak to and lead a discussion of the meaning of enfranchisement for Concord residents then and now.  Also participating in the voting re-enactment will be Concord’s own Joe Palumbo\, portraying Judge Hoar — and hopefully you\, too! \n  \nThis event\, which is dedicated to the ideals of liberty\, personal agency\, and universal suffrage\, is free and open to all.  Light refreshments served.

Dressed in a gown of the time\, she plays authentic instruments such as lap dulcimer and an “English guitar” of the type favored by women in the 18th century. Join her for a trip back in time. DESCRIPTION:Wright Tavern in Concord Center\nMarch 22\, 2025\n10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. \nThroughout February and March of 1775\, the people of Massachusetts were preparing for war. The Provincial Congress organized a network of intelligence to monitor the British Army and the military supplies throughout the province. Aware of the rebel operations\, the British Army conducted military intelligence missions into the Massachusetts countryside. These efforts would see moments of intrigue\, strife\, and unexpected voices playing an important role in what was to come. Join us at the Wright Tavern on Saturday\, March 22\, 2025 for a living history event that examines the diverse experiences of those involved in this crucial period leading up to the outbreak of war. \nSchedule of Events:\n10:00 a.m. – Site Opens\nExplore the Wright Tavern and learn about the various groups involved in intelligence networks in Massachusetts in the Spring of 1775. Meet Park Rangers and living history volunteers who examine the methods\, experiences\, and challenges of people navigating this difficult period in history. \n11:00 a.m. – “For the information of Gen. Gage:” The British Spy mission to Concord\nJoin us for an interactive program that puts you in the position of a citizen of Concord in March of 1775 when two British Army spies arrived in town. Park Ranger Thompson Dasher will talk about the experiences of these two officers as well as how their visit impacted the community. \n2:00 p.m. – “Merchants and Mechanicks:” The revolutionary Intelligence Network in Massachusetts\nJoin Park Rangers Jane Barnes and Bob Marchetta to learn about the diverse groups of people involved in the spread of information in 1775. DESCRIPTION:Theodore Parker of Lexington and Ralph Waldo Emerson of Concord were directly linked to the events of April 19\, 1775. Both men’s grandfathers were involved in the battles that sparked the American Revolution. \nHow did Parker and Emerson view their revolutionary heritage? How did this shape their thinking in the turbulent years leading up to the Civil War? In this lecture\, Public Historian Richard Smith will discuss the literary and spiritual connections between the two men and their two towns. How did Parker and Emerson use their heritage to help change American literature and thought? How did this affect the Anti-slavery Movement of the 1850s? \nRichard Smith has lectured on and written about antebellum United States history and 19th-century American literature for 26 years. He has worked in Concord as a public historian and Living History Interpreter since 1999 and has written or edited 11 books for Applewood Books/Arcadia Publishing. DESCRIPTION:Concord Free Public Library Concert\, Rotunda \nPeter Sykes is one of the most distinguished and versatile keyboard artists performing today. He will be performing a harpsichord concert reflecting music in homes in the American colonial era. \nConcerts are free and open to the public\, but reservations are required. Reservations open at 9 a.m. on the Saturday two weeks before the concert. The library closes at 5 on the day of the concert\, volunteers with oversight from a library staff member prepare for the concert\, then the doors are opened for the audience at 7 p.m. Concerts are about 90 minutes long\, including a brief intermission. \nSave Date for April 5: Stephen Drury is a pianist and conductor on the faculty of the New England Conservatory. His program features Bach\, Beethoven\, and Charles Ives’s Concord Sonata. \n  \n\n  \n\n

If you can’t be with us in person\, watch online. \n“A Fight for Freedom: Honoring Patriots of Color” is a two-hour live  event dedicated to uncovering and honoring the often-overlooked contributions of Black and Indigenous patriots  both during the American Revolution and the long struggle for continued expansion of  freedom and liberty over the past 250 years. \nThis event will take place at the Umbrella Arts\, 40 Stow Street in Concord. \nIn 1775\, between 20 and 40 colonists of African and Indigenous descent fought alongside their fellow revolutionaries on the Battle Road during the opening conflict of the American Revolution. These individuals\, who had been excluded from formal militia service prior to the war\, became some of the earliest patriots to take up arms in the fight for liberty. By the end of the Revolutionary War\, approximately 5\,500  people of color had served in the Continental Army or militia\, risking their lives for the promise of freedom. \nDespite their significant role in the founding of the United States\, the stories of these patriots and their descendants  have often been erased or overshadowed by historical bias\, and their sacrifices obscured by a narrative written by others. \nBy telling their stories and honoring their service\, we not only shed light on their essential contributions but also expand our understanding of the nation’s founding. Their bravery and resilience remind us that the struggle for freedom has always been fought by people from all backgrounds and walks of life. Today\, efforts at the national and state levels—particularly in Massachusetts—are working to correct this historical oversight and honor the full spectrum of those who fought and continue to fight for liberty and equality for all people. \nProgram Highlights: \n\nHistorical Narratives: Historical interpreters guide participants through the stories of people  who fought for independence.
