DESCRIPTION:Join us on Thursday April 3rd at 5:30pm for the opening reception of our upcoming exhibition\, “ Liberation Textiles: Our Social Fabric\, ” curated by Elizabeth Thach and Camilø Álvårez. \nThe show is centered around themes of individual freedom and primarily features fiber-based visual art. Programming for the exhibition also includes a Curators Tour on Thursday April 3rd at 5pm\, as well as Artist Demos with some of the exhibition’s featured artists. The show is on view April 3 – May 11\, 2025. \n\n\n\nCurators Tour Thursday April 3rd at 5pm (opening reception starts at 5:30pm that evening)\nArtist Demo: A Sense of Touch – Tapestry Weaving with Sam Fields Wednesday\, April 16th\, 10:30am-12pm\nThe show is centered around themes of individual freedom and is scheduled to coincide with the town’s celebration of Patriots Day. It will primarily feature fiber-based visual art. To give you a sense of the creative direction\, here’s an excerpt from what the curator has written about the show:\n\n\n“When we talk about ‘social fabric’ the metaphor is apt because of the various ways that individual lives overlap [like threads] and are supported by other lives to create a unified garment… We participate in elections\, but we also participate in economic systems\, familial networks\, and larger social communities. Communal life is always a negotiation between individual freedom and the needs of the social fabric that supports and makes individual freedom possible… Making art is one of the purest expressions of personal freedom that the individual can participate in\, but the work that artists make as individuals is influenced by artists’ economic\, cultural\, and communal realities… Communities support and participate in the individual’s freedom when they view the art that individuals make. It is a critical mistake to think that art can exist in a vacuum\, or that individuals can be free without the supports and infrastructure of a healthy community.”

SUMMARY:Patriots of Color Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:Saturdays\, 1:30pm Tours \nMarch 22\, 2025 – June 30\, 2025 \nBetween twenty and forty colonists who fought along the Battle Road on April 19\, 1775\, were of African descent or Indigenous people. Although excluded from required militia service prior to the war\, these individuals of color were the first of many to take up arms between 1775 and 1783. \nBy the end of the conflict\, an estimated 5\,500 African and Indigenous  men served on the colonial side. Unfortunately\, systemic racism and historical bias have erased or buried many records of Black and Indigenous people who played a prominent role in the founding of the United States. In this 90 minute walking tour we will examine the known history and stories of these Patriots of Color who fought for freedom locally both during the American Revolution and beyond. Minuteman National Park\, Robbins House and Concord Visitors Center staff will lead this tour examining the incredible stories of individuals who risked everything during their struggle for liberty\, equality\, and freedom for all.\n\nTour meets at the North Bridge Lower Lot.  All ages are welcome. SUMMARY:"Weaving an Address" - Opening Spring 2025
DESCRIPTION:Spring 2025 – Fall 2025 \n“Weaving an Address” \nThe exhibition is planned for The Brister Hill Loop\, part of the forest named for Brister Freeman\, an enslaved man who won his freedom by serving in the Revolutionary War and then bought property in Walden Woods and lived there along with other formerly enslaved. This area holds the untold stories of people who etched out their lives in an area inhospitable to growth. The exhibit intends to be a historically informed temporary outdoor installation in this area to remember those whose lives remain unmarked to express the importance and fullness of history that exists within the background of this historical site. \n  \nThis project is part of The Umbrella Arts Center’s long standing Art Ramble tradition\, but is extended this year because of the 250 celebration. Viewers will walk a trail that has one monument to Brister Freeman and is otherwise named Thoreau’s trail where quotes accompany you throughout. Between 10 and 12 works will be dispersed and placed along a marked path leading to the Reflection Circle. \n  \nThe participating artists will pull their inspiration from the research and information provided about Walden Woods with the primary source of research being the book Black Walden: Slavery and Its Aftermath in Concord\, Massachusetts by Elise Lemire. \n  \nThe site-specific exhibition will be a combination of sculpture\, installation and live performance inspired by the inhabitants of these woods to evoke their presence and to express the experiences of their lives within the space. Many of the artists will also have work in a show that will be being held concurrently in the Allie Kussin Gallery at The Umbrella Arts Center.

Led and arranged by beloved NYC music leader Kenter Davies (who grew up in Sudbury!)\, we’ll explore harmony\, free our voices\, and build community through the song “What a Wonderful World” by Louis Armstrong. There’s no auditions\, no experience necessary\, and no seeking of perfection\, We’ll just be making music for music-making’s sake! \nA timeless classic about the beauty of the natural world and the kindness we can afford one another as humans\, “What a Wonderful World” feels more important than ever to sing. We’ll explore a choral arrangement of the tune featuring lush\, jazzy harmonies. \nDuring our time together we will: \n○ Play singing games to activate our voices\, bodies\, and connection to one another \n○ Work through the song section by section\, infusing some musicality as we go \n○ Discuss the lyrics of the song and what meaning we can find in it \n○ Sing through the song a bunch and explore the different journeys it may take us on! \nA week prior to the event\, you’ll receive the sheet music and vocal demos arrangement of the song to use as a resource. DESCRIPTION:Celebrate Patriots’ Day at the Concord Museum \nOn April 19\, 2025\, the Concord Museum will host a special Community Day inviting the public to mark the 250th anniversary of the start of the American Revolution. As a steward of the largest collection of objects that witnessed the day the “shot heard round the world” set the war in motion\, the Museum will offer a unique opportunity to commemorate this special anniversary through an unforgettable\, family-friendly experience. \nThe Community Day will include: \n· Free admission (9:00 am – 5:00 pm)\, including access to the immersive April 19\, 1775 galleries to see the original lantern from Paul Revere’s famous midnight ride and the new special exhibition Whose Revolution. \n· A family-friendly encampment of Revolutionary Living History (10:00 am – 5:00 pm). Billerica Colonial Minutemen will drill with muskets\, cook over an open firepit\, and demonstrate colonial crafts. \n· Family drop-in activities (9:00 am – 4:00 pm) inspired by the American Revolution and the new Barefoot Books publication Rise Up! \n· A Forum with Doris Kearns Goodwin (6:00 – 7:00 pm) on the American Revolution and its legacy. Advanced registration is sold out. Limited attendance available via a stand-by line and livestreamed. Free. \n· A free outdoor concert with the Goodwin Band from 6:30 – 7:30 pm\, finishing with a view of a town-wide drone show from the Museum’s front lawn. \n· Food trucks and ice cream stationed outside the Museum from 11:00 am to 8:00pm along with a wine and beer truck from 2:00 pm through the drone show.

SUMMARY:Patriots of Color Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:Saturdays\, 1:30pm Tours \nMarch 22\, 2025 – June 30\, 2025 \nBetween twenty and forty colonists who fought along the Battle Road on April 19\, 1775\, were of African descent or Indigenous people. Although excluded from required militia service prior to the war\, these individuals of color were the first of many to take up arms between 1775 and 1783. \nBy the end of the conflict\, an estimated 5\,500 African and Indigenous  men served on the colonial side. Unfortunately\, systemic racism and historical bias have erased or buried many records of Black and Indigenous people who played a prominent role in the founding of the United States. In this 90 minute walking tour we will examine the known history and stories of these Patriots of Color who fought for freedom locally both during the American Revolution and beyond. Minuteman National Park\, Robbins House and Concord Visitors Center staff will lead this tour examining the incredible stories of individuals who risked everything during their struggle for liberty\, equality\, and freedom for all.\n\nTour meets at the North Bridge Lower Lot.  All ages are welcome.
