DESCRIPTION:Indigenous Theater-Maker’s Journey Grapples with Geographic Borders and\nCultural Legacies in a Universal Search for Belonging \nFebruary 28- March 23\, 2025 TICKETS \nUmbrella Arts\, Black Box Theater \nBy Madeline Sayet\, Directed by Tara Moses \nThe Umbrella Stage Company is thrilled to mount the New England Premiere of Mohegan theatre-maker Madeline Sayet’s ground-breaking one-woman show\, Where We Belong.\nPerformed for the first time by an artist other than Sayet herself\, it is helmed by fellow\nIndigenous director and playwright Tara Moses and stars GiGi Buddie. This brand new staging in\nConcord\, MA during the Semiquincentennial of the beginning of the American Revolution raises\ntimely questions of whose histories are told\, how\, by whom\, and in what language. \nWith great humor\, insight\, and imaginative storytelling\, the autobiographical play weaves\ntogether Indigenous history\, Shakespeare\, cultural legacy\, the power of language\, and legend. It\nrecounts Sayet’s 2015 journey to England to pursue a PhD in Shakespeare in the shadow of the\nBrexit vote. Moving between nations that have failed to reckon with their ongoing roles in\ncolonialism\, she grapples with what it means to remain or leave her own home as a Mohegan\,\nbut discovers comfort in mirroring the footsteps of her ancestors who traveled to England in the\n1700s. \n“Madeline’s story is uniquely personal\, but universally relatable. Following the completion of\nthe original tour with Madeline at the center\,” says Brian Boruta\, Umbrella Stage Producing\nArtistic Director\, “we wanted to explore how the play could evolve\, be adapted for other\nperformers\, and reveal a continuing relevance for future productions and new audiences. SUMMARY:Telling a Better Story - Expand What You Know About Concord's History
DESCRIPTION:Are you hosting family and friends for the 250th? Would you like to impress them with what you know about Concord’s history? If you want to update the stories you know and learn new ones\, you will want to attend this talk.\n\nPublic historian Beth van Duzer has updated and expanded some well-known stories using primary sources\, such as John Jack’s\, enslaved to a Concord shoemaker Benjamin Barron\, able to purchase his freedom\, and buried in Concord’s Old Hill Burial Ground. Additionally\, new stories have emerged that enrich Concord’s history\, including the tale of an Indigenous boy who lived in Concord in the late 1700s\, women who were compensated by the Town of Concord whose husbands served as soldiers during the Revolutionary War\, and the expanded story of an enslaved woman who later lived as a free person in Concord. \nBeth van Duzer is an independent historian in Concord\, MA. She earned a bachelor’s degree in English from Montclair State University and a master’s degree in History\, focused on Public History\, from Southern New Hampshire University. Beth is the co-chair and clerk of the Concord250 History & Education Subcommittee and is the owner of Concord Walking Tours\, a history research and tour company.

SUMMARY:Eyewitness to Revolution with American Ancestors
DESCRIPTION:This illustrated virtual talk will focus on the stories told by objects in the Concord Museum collection about the lead-up to April 19\, 1775\, and the epochal day itself. In the aggregate\, these stories contribute forcefully to an understanding that the Revolution\, the great turn from a monarchy to a republic\, was already over well before the day the Revolutionary War began.\n\n\n\nDavid Wood\, Curator of the Concord Museum\, has served at the Museum since 1985 and provides deep knowledge of the collection and Concord history. He has overseen the development of over 40 temporary exhibitions and galleries. He is the author of numerous scholarly articles and publications\, including the award-winning An Observant Eye: The Thoreau Collection at the Concord Museum and Eyewitness to Revolution: The American Revolution Collection at the Concord Museum. \n\n\n\n\n\nHosted by American Ancestors. Forums for the 250th Anniversary of the American Revolution are made possible by a gift from Claire and Joshua Nelson. If you can’t be with us in person\, watch online. \n“A Fight for Freedom: Honoring Patriots of Color” is a two-hour live  event dedicated to uncovering and honoring the often-overlooked contributions of Black and Indigenous patriots  both during the American Revolution and the long struggle for continued expansion of  freedom and liberty over the past 250 years. \nThis event will take place at the Umbrella Arts\, 40 Stow Street in Concord. \nIn 1775\, between 20 and 40 colonists of African and Indigenous descent fought alongside their fellow revolutionaries on the Battle Road during the opening conflict of the American Revolution. These individuals\, who had been excluded from formal militia service prior to the war\, became some of the earliest patriots to take up arms in the fight for liberty. By the end of the Revolutionary War\, approximately 5\,500  people of color had served in the Continental Army or militia\, risking their lives for the promise of freedom. \nDespite their significant role in the founding of the United States\, the stories of these patriots and their descendants  have often been erased or overshadowed by historical bias\, and their sacrifices obscured by a narrative written by others. \nBy telling their stories and honoring their service\, we not only shed light on their essential contributions but also expand our understanding of the nation’s founding. Their bravery and resilience remind us that the struggle for freedom has always been fought by people from all backgrounds and walks of life. Today\, efforts at the national and state levels—particularly in Massachusetts—are working to correct this historical oversight and honor the full spectrum of those who fought and continue to fight for liberty and equality for all people. \nProgram Highlights: \n\nHistorical Narratives: Historical interpreters guide participants through the stories of people  who fought for independence. DESCRIPTION:Concord Free Public Library Concert\, Rotunda \nPeter Sykes is one of the most distinguished and versatile keyboard artists performing today. He will be performing a harpsichord concert reflecting music in homes in the American colonial era. \nConcerts are free and open to the public\, but reservations are required. Reservations open at 9 a.m. on the Saturday two weeks before the concert. The library closes at 5 on the day of the concert\, volunteers with oversight from a library staff member prepare for the concert\, then the doors are opened for the audience at 7 p.m. Concerts are about 90 minutes long\, including a brief intermission. \nSave Date for April 5: Stephen Drury is a pianist and conductor on the faculty of the New England Conservatory. His program features Bach\, Beethoven\, and Charles Ives’s Concord Sonata. \n  \n\n  \n\n

SUMMARY:Abundant Heresies: The Revolutions of Theodore Parker and Ralph Waldo Emerson - with Richard Smith
DESCRIPTION:Theodore Parker of Lexington and Ralph Waldo Emerson of Concord were directly linked to the events of April 19\, 1775. Both men’s grandfathers were involved in the battles that sparked the American Revolution. \nHow did Parker and Emerson view their revolutionary heritage? How did this shape their thinking in the turbulent years leading up to the Civil War? In this lecture\, Public Historian Richard Smith will discuss the literary and spiritual connections between the two men and their two towns. How did Parker and Emerson use their heritage to help change American literature and thought? How did this affect the Anti-slavery Movement of the 1850s? \nRichard Smith has lectured on and written about antebellum United States history and 19th-century American literature for 26 years. He has worked in Concord as a public historian and Living History Interpreter since 1999 and has written or edited 11 books for Applewood Books/Arcadia Publishing. The Provincial Congress organized a network of intelligence to monitor the British Army and the military supplies throughout the province. Aware of the rebel operations\, the British Army conducted military intelligence missions into the Massachusetts countryside. These efforts would see moments of intrigue\, strife\, and unexpected voices playing an important role in what was to come. Join us at the Wright Tavern on Saturday\, March 22\, 2025 for a living history event that examines the diverse experiences of those involved in this crucial period leading up to the outbreak of war. \nSchedule of Events:\n10:00 a.m. – Site Opens\nExplore the Wright Tavern and learn about the various groups involved in intelligence networks in Massachusetts in the Spring of 1775. Meet Park Rangers and living history volunteers who examine the methods\, experiences\, and challenges of people navigating this difficult period in history. \n11:00 a.m. – “For the information of Gen. Gage:” The British Spy mission to Concord\nJoin us for an interactive program that puts you in the position of a citizen of Concord in March of 1775 when two British Army spies arrived in town. Park Ranger Thompson Dasher will talk about the experiences of these two officers as well as how their visit impacted the community. \n2:00 p.m. – “Merchants and Mechanicks:” The revolutionary Intelligence Network in Massachusetts\nJoin Park Rangers Jane Barnes and Bob Marchetta to learn about the diverse groups of people involved in the spread of information in 1775. SUMMARY:Patriots of Color Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:Saturdays\, 1:30pm Tours \nMarch 22\, 2025 – June 30\, 2025 \nBetween twenty and forty colonists who fought along the Battle Road on April 19\, 1775\, were of African descent or Indigenous people. Although excluded from required militia service prior to the war\, these individuals of color were the first of many to take up arms between 1775 and 1783. \nBy the end of the conflict\, an estimated 5\,500 African and Indigenous  men served on the colonial side. Unfortunately\, systemic racism and historical bias have erased or buried many records of Black and Indigenous people who played a prominent role in the founding of the United States. In this 90 minute walking tour we will examine the known history and stories of these Patriots of Color who fought for freedom locally both during the American Revolution and beyond. Minuteman National Park\, Robbins House and Concord Visitors Center staff will lead this tour examining the incredible stories of individuals who risked everything during their struggle for liberty\, equality\, and freedom for all.\n\nTour meets at the North Bridge Lower Lot.  All ages are welcome. DESCRIPTION:Description:  To mark 250 years since the start of the American Revolution\, CWC member Diane Taraz traces the road to rebellion with songs enjoyed by ordinary people\, especially those often overlooked\, such as women and people of color. She presents lively ballads\, serene hymns\, bold marches\, passionate laments\, and songs created by both sides to promote either independence or loyalty to the crown. Dressed in a gown of the time\, she plays authentic instruments such as lap dulcimer and an “English guitar” of the type favored by women in the 18th century. Join her for a trip back in time. DESCRIPTION:  \nMeet at the Concord Town House to celebrate an auspicious moment in our history:  March 29th marks 145 years to the day that Louisa May Alcott\, famed authoress of Little Women and hundreds of other literary works\, became the first woman of Concord to cast a vote in a Town election! \nJoin in the excitement within the very room in the Town House where voting took place\, support the brave band of 19 other women who also voted for School Committee on that triumphant day\, and revel in the newfound empowerment these women achieved by actively participating in democracy as never before! \n  \nLeading the march to the ballot box will be Jan Turnquist – Executive Director of Louisa May Alcott’s Orchard House\, world-renowned Living History portrayer of Miss Alcott\, and a Concord resident – who will also speak to and lead a discussion of the meaning of enfranchisement for Concord residents then and now.  Also participating in the voting re-enactment will be Concord’s own Joe Palumbo\, portraying Judge Hoar — and hopefully you\, too! \n  \nThis event\, which is dedicated to the ideals of liberty\, personal agency\, and universal suffrage\, is free and open to all.  Light refreshments served.

DESCRIPTION:MARCH 29 @ 8:00PM and March 30 @ 2:30PM \nThe Concord Orchestra\, conducted by Music Director Zeke Fetrow\, is thrilled to perform “American Heritage” concerts as part of the Concord250 celebration.  Performances are on Saturday\, March 29 at 8:00 p.m. and Sunday\, March 30 at 2:30 p.m. at the Performing Arts Center at 51 Walden.  We are excited to present a world premiere of A Beacon of Hope by Jeff Beal\, commissioned by the orchestra for the celebration!  Jeff Beal\, the composer of the new work\, is an Emmy-winning composer of soundtracks for films and television. \nOther American compositions on the program are Florence Price’s brilliant Symphony No. 3\, Leonard Bernstein’s festive Candide Overture\, and The Liberty Bell March by John Phillip Sousa. \nWe look forward to performing with Richard Sebring\, principal horn of the Boston Symphony Orchestra\, playing Mozart’s Horn Concerto No. 3 and his own short work composed for the occasion\, The White Cockade. Richard Sebring remarks\, “It’s always a great pleasure to make music with my friends in the Concord Orchestra\, especially in 51 Walden\, the site of many artistic experiences in my youth. And I look forward to collaborating with Zeke Fetrow\, who will bring unbridled energy to these performances.” \nFlorence Price\, a 1906 graduate of New England Conservatory\, was the first African-American woman to be recognized as a symphonic composer. Her expressive Symphony No. 3 \, written in 1938 and 1939\, includes melodies inspired by spirituals and a dance called a juba that was brought to the southern United States by African slaves.  Its premiere was in 1940\, but it was neglected until it was performed again in 2001.  It remained unpublished until 2008\, and it was not until recently that it was re-discovered and played more frequently. \nDr. Sam Woodhead\, trombone soloist of The U.S. Army Band “Pershing’s Own” Concert Band\, will lead a workshop on Sousa performance for musicians in the orchestra. Pre-concert discussions by Zeke Fetrow and other musicians involved in the performance are planned for Saturday at 7:00 p.m. and Sunday at 1:30 p.m. \nTickets for adults and seniors are $25. And I look forward to collaborating with Zeke Fetrow\, who will bring unbridled energy to these performances.” \nFlorence Price\, a 1906 graduate of New England Conservatory\, was the first African-American woman to be recognized as a symphonic composer. Her expressive Symphony No. 3 \, written in 1938 and 1939\, includes melodies inspired by spirituals and a dance called a juba that was brought to the southern United States by African slaves.  Its premiere was in 1940\, but it was neglected until it was performed again in 2001.  It remained unpublished until 2008\, and it was not until recently that it was re-discovered and played more frequently. \nDr. Sam Woodhead\, trombone soloist of The U.S. Army Band “Pershing’s Own” Concert Band\, will lead a workshop on Sousa performance for musicians in the orchestra. Pre-concert discussions by Zeke Fetrow and other musicians involved in the performance are planned for Saturday at 7:00 p.m. and Sunday at 1:30 p.m. \nTickets for adults and seniors are $25.
