SUMMARY:Ways of My Ancestors – Imagery: Lighting the Path to Awareness
DESCRIPTION:“Ways of My Ancestors – Imagery: Lighting the Path to Awareness” features photographic work by Scott Strong Hawk Foster that celebrates the rich\, diverse\, and resilient cultures of the Native Peoples of the Northeastern Woodlands of North America. \nFoster is a Native American photographer and an enrolled member of Hassanamisco Nipmuc Band with proud Mohegan and Cherokee lineage. His work has been exhibited at the Danforth Museum\, Worcester Art Museum\, Boston City Hall\, and other venues. \nOn view through March 23 in The Umbrella’s Wedge Gallery\, this exhibition reflects Foster’s travels within his home state of Massachusetts and throughout the ancestral homelands of the Native American Peoples of New England.  While attending powwows\, cultural events\, workshops\, and Indigenous practices that span millennia\, his passion has become highlighting cultures and history of the Indigenous peoples that are still here and living amongst us. \nBoth the opening reception March 5\, 6PM and Artist Talk\, March 9\, 1-2PM are free and open to the public. \nThe exhibition runs concurrently with The Umbrella Stage Company’s Where We Belong by Mohegan playwright Madeline Sayet in The Umbrella’s Black Box theater. Both are presented as part of The Umbrella’s programs recognizing the American semiquincentennial. \nThe Umbrella is ADA accessible\, a proud partner in the Massachusetts Cultural Council’s EBT Card-to-Culture program\, and provides free parking and free admission to its visual arts galleries. SUMMARY:Concord250 Event: Umbrella Arts: "Where We Belong"
DESCRIPTION:Indigenous Theater-Maker’s Journey Grapples with Geographic Borders and\nCultural Legacies in a Universal Search for Belonging \nFebruary 28- March 23\, 2025 TICKETS \nUmbrella Arts\, Black Box Theater \nBy Madeline Sayet\, Directed by Tara Moses \nThe Umbrella Stage Company is thrilled to mount the New England Premiere of Mohegan theatre-maker Madeline Sayet’s ground-breaking one-woman show\, Where We Belong.\nPerformed for the first time by an artist other than Sayet herself\, it is helmed by fellow\nIndigenous director and playwright Tara Moses and stars GiGi Buddie. This brand new staging in\nConcord\, MA during the Semiquincentennial of the beginning of the American Revolution raises\ntimely questions of whose histories are told\, how\, by whom\, and in what language. \nWith great humor\, insight\, and imaginative storytelling\, the autobiographical play weaves\ntogether Indigenous history\, Shakespeare\, cultural legacy\, the power of language\, and legend. It\nrecounts Sayet’s 2015 journey to England to pursue a PhD in Shakespeare in the shadow of the\nBrexit vote. Moving between nations that have failed to reckon with their ongoing roles in\ncolonialism\, she grapples with what it means to remain or leave her own home as a Mohegan\,\nbut discovers comfort in mirroring the footsteps of her ancestors who traveled to England in the\n1700s. \n“Madeline’s story is uniquely personal\, but universally relatable. Following the completion of\nthe original tour with Madeline at the center\,” says Brian Boruta\, Umbrella Stage Producing\nArtistic Director\, “we wanted to explore how the play could evolve\, be adapted for other\nperformers\, and reveal a continuing relevance for future productions and new audiences. Sayet\noriginally developed the play in partnership with Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company in\nassociation with The Folger Shakespeare Library\, and is engaged with the Umbrella team on this\nnext evolution. \nThe show runs Feb. 28-Mar. 23 (press opening Sunday Mar. 2\, 3:00PM)\, including a special\nStudent Group Matinee Wed. Mar. 12 at 4PM\, and select performances will feature engagement\nopportunities.\n● Dinner & A Show packages are available for all Thursday night performances\n● Talk Backs scheduled following performances on March 12\, 16 and 20\n● Childcare with art activities for youth ages 5-12 is available through The Umbrella’s Kid\nCare program for parents interested in attending the March 16 matinee\nPlanned community engagement activities will also highlight art and experiences of Concord’s\nnative Nipmuc and Massachusett tribes\, including a concurrent gallery exhibition of work by\nNipmuc photographer Scott Strong Hawk Foster.\nThe Umbrella is ADA accessible\, a proud partner in the Massachusetts Cultural Council’s EBT\nCard-to-Culture program\, and provides free parking and free admission to its visual arts\ngalleries. See https://TheUmbrellaArts.org/WWB for more information. \nSpecial Note to Press: We ask our friends in the press to please respect the request to avoid\nreproducing Mohegan language words in their coverage\, including those in the script\, as this is a\nlanguage under active reconstruction and reclamation. \n  \nABOUT MADELINE SAYET\nMadeline Sayet is a member of the Mohegan Tribe in Connecticut\, where she was raised on a\ncombination of traditional Mohegan stories and Shakespeare. Both of which have influenced\nher work as a playwright and director.\nShe has been named a Forbes 30 Under 30 in Hollywood & Entertainment\, a NCAIED Native\nAmerican 40 Under 40\, a TED Fellow\, MIT Media Lab Director’s Fellow\, and a recipient of the\nWhite House Champion of Change Award from President Obama. She is the Executive Director\nof the Yale Indigenous Performing Arts Program (YIPAP). Her directorial work has been\ndescribed by critics as effervescent\, enchanting\, magical\, insightful\, and fearless. As a performer\nshe was nominated for a Jeff Award for best Solo Performance for her run of Where We Belong\nat The Goodman Theatre.\nABOUT TARA MOSES\nTara Moses is a director\, multi award-winning playwright\, co-Founder of Groundwater Arts\, and\na citizen of the Seminole Nation of Oklahoma.\nAs a director\, her work has been seen in Santa Fe\, NM; Kansas City\, MO; Boston\, MA; San\nFrancisco\, CA; Kyle\, SD; Vermillion\, SD; Providence\, RI; Seattle\, WA; New York\, NY; Tulsa\, OK;\nWashington\, D.C.; Bethesda\, MD; Oklahoma City\, OK; Palmetto\, GA; Edmond\, OK; and Hartford\,\nCT. Also a prolific playwright\, her plays have been produced and/or developed with Company\nOne Theatre (Boston\, MA); Alter Theatre Ensemble (San Rafael\, CA); Kitchen Dog Theater\n(Dallas\, TX); Geva Theatre Center (Rochester\, RI); Oregon Shakespeare Festival (Ashland\, OR);\nAmerican Indian Community House (New York\, NY); Safe Harbors Indigenous Collective (New\nYork\, NY); among many others nationwide.\nShe is an associate member of the Stage Directors and Choreographers Society; and Dramatists\nGuild member. She holds an MFA in Directing from Brown/Trinity Rep and a BA in Theatre from\nthe University of Tulsa.\nABOUT GIGI BUDDIE\nAs an artivist\, GiGi Buddie’s (she/her) (Tongva and Mescalero Apache) professional and personal\npursuits converge at the intersection of art and climate justice. SUMMARY:Telling a Better Story - Expand What You Know About Concord's History
DESCRIPTION:Are you hosting family and friends for the 250th? Would you like to impress them with what you know about Concord’s history? If you want to update the stories you know and learn new ones\, you will want to attend this talk.\n\nPublic historian Beth van Duzer has updated and expanded some well-known stories using primary sources\, such as John Jack’s\, enslaved to a Concord shoemaker Benjamin Barron\, able to purchase his freedom\, and buried in Concord’s Old Hill Burial Ground. Additionally\, new stories have emerged that enrich Concord’s history\, including the tale of an Indigenous boy who lived in Concord in the late 1700s\, women who were compensated by the Town of Concord whose husbands served as soldiers during the Revolutionary War\, and the expanded story of an enslaved woman who later lived as a free person in Concord. \nBeth van Duzer is an independent historian in Concord\, MA. She earned a bachelor’s degree in English from Montclair State University and a master’s degree in History\, focused on Public History\, from Southern New Hampshire University. Beth is the co-chair and clerk of the Concord250 History & Education Subcommittee and is the owner of Concord Walking Tours\, a history research and tour company.

SUMMARY:Eyewitness to Revolution with American Ancestors
DESCRIPTION:This illustrated virtual talk will focus on the stories told by objects in the Concord Museum collection about the lead-up to April 19\, 1775\, and the epochal day itself. In the aggregate\, these stories contribute forcefully to an understanding that the Revolution\, the great turn from a monarchy to a republic\, was already over well before the day the Revolutionary War began.\n\n\n\nDavid Wood\, Curator of the Concord Museum\, has served at the Museum since 1985 and provides deep knowledge of the collection and Concord history. He has overseen the development of over 40 temporary exhibitions and galleries. He is the author of numerous scholarly articles and publications\, including the award-winning An Observant Eye: The Thoreau Collection at the Concord Museum and Eyewitness to Revolution: The American Revolution Collection at the Concord Museum. \n\n\n\n\n\nHosted by American Ancestors. Forums for the 250th Anniversary of the American Revolution are made possible by a gift from Claire and Joshua Nelson. Forums are supported in part by the Sally Lanagan Fund. \nThis program is entirely virtual and hosted by American Ancestors. \nPlease register on their website to watch the program.

SUMMARY:Concord250 Event: “A Fight for Freedom: Honoring Patriots of Color”
DESCRIPTION:Reserve your space using the QR code below or link here. \nReservations requested but not required. \n \nLIVE STREAM – CLICK HERE FOR LINK! If you can’t be with us in person\, watch online. \n“A Fight for Freedom: Honoring Patriots of Color” is a two-hour live  event dedicated to uncovering and honoring the often-overlooked contributions of Black and Indigenous patriots  both during the American Revolution and the long struggle for continued expansion of  freedom and liberty over the past 250 years. \nThis event will take place at the Umbrella Arts\, 40 Stow Street in Concord. \nIn 1775\, between 20 and 40 colonists of African and Indigenous descent fought alongside their fellow revolutionaries on the Battle Road during the opening conflict of the American Revolution. These individuals\, who had been excluded from formal militia service prior to the war\, became some of the earliest patriots to take up arms in the fight for liberty. By the end of the Revolutionary War\, approximately 5\,500  people of color had served in the Continental Army or militia\, risking their lives for the promise of freedom. \nDespite their significant role in the founding of the United States\, the stories of these patriots and their descendants  have often been erased or overshadowed by historical bias\, and their sacrifices obscured by a narrative written by others. \nBy telling their stories and honoring their service\, we not only shed light on their essential contributions but also expand our understanding of the nation’s founding. Their bravery and resilience remind us that the struggle for freedom has always been fought by people from all backgrounds and walks of life. Today\, efforts at the national and state levels—particularly in Massachusetts—are working to correct this historical oversight and honor the full spectrum of those who fought and continue to fight for liberty and equality for all people. \nProgram Highlights: \n\nHistorical Narratives: Historical interpreters guide participants through the stories of people  who fought for independence. Brister Freeman\, Cesar Robbins among others\nInspiring Performers: Through spoken word\, theatre\, music and song performers will share perspectives on the ongoing struggle for freedom\, liberty\, and equality\, both during the Revolution and in the centuries that followed.\nCommunity Reflection: The event will close with a community dialogue on the importance of recognizing the diverse voices and contributions that shaped the nation’s history\, past and present.\n\nJoin us for an event of learning\, reflection\, and recognition as we honor the courageous men and women who fought for freedom and whose stories are vital to understanding the full history of our nation. \nFunded by the Massachusetts Office of Travel and Tourism \nPartners: MA250 Concord250\,  Minuteman National Historical  Park\, The Robbins House\, The Town of Concord\, The Umbrella Arts Center. \nCONTACT : Joe Palumbo\,  Concord250 Events Chair\,  617 905 5085

SUMMARY:Signs\, Stories\, and Unraveling Myths in Concord—A Concord Justice Roundtable Event
DESCRIPTION:Long before English settlers arrived in 1635\, this land was known as Musketaquid—“the land between the grassy rivers”—and home to Indigenous peoples for over 10\,000 years. This event will explore how we can broaden our historical perspective\, moving beyond a colonial-centered narrative to one that acknowledges Indigenous history\, re-examines outdated myths\, and ensures all stories are told. \nAs we continue to learn and grow\, communities like Concord have the opportunity to lead the way in sharing a more complete and honest history. The removal of signage that overlooked the presence of Nipmuc\, Massachusett\, and Wampanoag peoples was a meaningful first step\, but there’s more work to do. In the middle of a broader conversation about race\, justice\, the mistreatment of Indigenous peoples\, and the legacy of enslavement in the United States today\, Concord must continue reckoning with its own part in that history. Join us for this important discussion on how we can honor the past while shaping a more inclusive future. \nThis event is part of the Concord Social Justice Roundtable\, a community forum that fosters discussion on how Concord can become a more welcoming\, equitable\, and inclusive community. It is sponsored by LWV of Concord-Carlisle\, Concord DEI Commission\, and Concord-Carlisle Human Rights Council. \nOrganized in partnership with The Umbrella Arts Center. From February 28 to March 23\, you are invited to see the play “Where We Belong” by Madeline Sayet: An Indigenous theatre-maker journeys across geographic borders\, personal history\, and Cultural legacies in search of a place to belong. Learn more. \nPresenter & Moderator: Joe Palumbo \nJoe Palumbo\, a Concord native\, grew up on a farm along Battle Road\, surrounded by history. He holds a BA in history from Boston University and a master’s in educational leadership from California State University. As an educator\, facilitator\, and presenter\, Joe excels in engaging audiences of all ages. He is committed to uncovering fuller historical narratives and works to tell the stories of all the people who built our nation and fought for the expansion of freedom and equality. He currently works as a historical interpreter in the Boston area and serves as Co-President of The Robbins House Museum. \nThis hybrid event is free and open to everyone. Zoom link coming soon. \n

SUMMARY:Abundant Heresies: The Revolutions of Theodore Parker and Ralph Waldo Emerson - with Richard Smith
DESCRIPTION:Theodore Parker of Lexington and Ralph Waldo Emerson of Concord were directly linked to the events of April 19\, 1775. Both men’s grandfathers were involved in the battles that sparked the American Revolution. \nHow did Parker and Emerson view their revolutionary heritage? How did this shape their thinking in the turbulent years leading up to the Civil War? In this lecture\, Public Historian Richard Smith will discuss the literary and spiritual connections between the two men and their two towns. How did Parker and Emerson use their heritage to help change American literature and thought? How did this affect the Anti-slavery Movement of the 1850s? \nRichard Smith has lectured on and written about antebellum United States history and 19th-century American literature for 26 years. He has worked in Concord as a public historian and Living History Interpreter since 1999 and has written or edited 11 books for Applewood Books/Arcadia Publishing. SUMMARY:Patriots of Color Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:Saturdays\, 1:30pm Tours \nMarch 22\, 2025 – June 30\, 2025 \nBetween twenty and forty colonists who fought along the Battle Road on April 19\, 1775\, were of African descent or Indigenous people. Although excluded from required militia service prior to the war\, these individuals of color were the first of many to take up arms between 1775 and 1783. \nBy the end of the conflict\, an estimated 5\,500 African and Indigenous  men served on the colonial side. Unfortunately\, systemic racism and historical bias have erased or buried many records of Black and Indigenous people who played a prominent role in the founding of the United States. In this 90 minute walking tour we will examine the known history and stories of these Patriots of Color who fought for freedom locally both during the American Revolution and beyond. Minuteman National Park\, Robbins House and Concord Visitors Center staff will lead this tour examining the incredible stories of individuals who risked everything during their struggle for liberty\, equality\, and freedom for all.\n\nTour meets at the North Bridge Lower Lot.  All ages are welcome. Free from March 22-June 30\, 2005.\n\nThis walking tour  is  co-sponsored by Minuteman National Park\, The Robbins House\,  and The Concord Visitors Center as a Concord250 Event and is funded by the Massachusetts Office of Travel and Tourism.\n\nDonations in support of Black History Month in Concord may be made to The Robbins House here:  https://robbinshouse.org/donate/\n\nLearn More about Patriots of Color HERE\n\nhttps://robbinshouse.org/wp-content/uploads/PatriotsofColor-web.pdf\n\nhttps://www.nps.gov/mima/patriotsofcolor.htm

SUMMARY:LWV hosts discussion with Bob Gross\, of his book "The Minutemen and Their World"
DESCRIPTION:The Minutemen and their World\, by Robert Gross\, revised and expanded edition \nMarch 23\, 2025 2:00 – 4:00 in the Goodwin Forum at the Concord Main Library.  In this live session Concord resident\, Robert Gross\, will be interviewed by Diane Proctor\, followed by questions from the audience. \n  \nThis book is an intensive and wide-ranging study of the community of Concord\, Massachusetts\, the city in which the famed “shot heard round the world” was fired on April 19\, 1775. Gross investigates daily life in the community at the time\, helping readers understand citizens’ (and future soldiers) daily routines\, worldview\, and even hopes and dreams as he relates their relationship to the war in which the community they called home would soon be engulfed. He looks as well at the legacy of the war in the town\, taking a brief look at its post-Revolution existence and place in American memory. The result is a well-rounded and lively account of a community before\, during\, and after the Revolution. (Review taken from The Historians Manifesto)

SUMMARY:Concord Museum: Whose Revolution: Special Exhibition Opening Day
DESCRIPTION:Whose Revolution: Special Exhibition Opening Day \nMarch 28\, 2025 \nThe first of three 250th special exhibitions at the Concord Museum\, Whose Revolution will highlight the competing and contradictory meanings of revolution during the period leading up to the war. Through maps\, documents\, furniture\, and other objects\, this exhibition will explore the gradual shifts that led to broader support for independence. It will examine the experiences of Loyalists and the work of building consensus. It will also emphasize the experiences of enslaved people and Indigenous communities to examine questions of liberty\, sovereignty\, and protest during the period. Through objects and media installations\, this exhibition will feature the different meanings of revolution for the individuals living through this period\, revealing how the idea of declaring independence from England was far from inevitable and developed only gradually. \n  \nTo commemorate the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution\, the Concord Museum will offer ongoing opportunities to gather as a community\, reflect on the founding of our nation\, and engage with the significance of our shared past for our present moment. Highlights will include three new special exhibitions\, a special speaker series\, a published catalog\, and expanded educational resources. Together\, these initiatives will showcase the incredible stories behind the eyewitness objects held at the Museum to illuminate the many different ways people experienced\, shaped\, and remembered the Revolution.
