Concord public historian Victor Curran will offer a one-night summary of his Concord History Course to give you all the talking points you need to tell Concord’s stories like a native from its first indigenous people to its famous writers and antislavery activists\, with a special emphasis on the town’s vital role on the first day of the American Revolution. DESCRIPTION:Indigenous Theater-Maker’s Journey Grapples with Geographic Borders and\nCultural Legacies in a Universal Search for Belonging \nFebruary 28- March 23\, 2025 \nUmbrella Arts\, Black Box Theater \nBy Madeline Sayet\, Directed by Tara Moses \nThe Umbrella Stage Company is thrilled to mount the New England Premiere of Mohegan theatre-maker Madeline Sayet’s ground-breaking one-woman show\, Where We Belong.\nPerformed for the first time by an artist other than Sayet herself\, it is helmed by fellow\nIndigenous director and playwright Tara Moses and stars GiGi Buddie. This brand new staging in\nConcord\, MA during the Semiquincentennial of the beginning of the American Revolution raises\ntimely questions of whose histories are told\, how\, by whom\, and in what language. \nWith great humor\, insight\, and imaginative storytelling\, the autobiographical play weaves\ntogether Indigenous history\, Shakespeare\, cultural legacy\, the power of language\, and legend. It\nrecounts Sayet’s 2015 journey to England to pursue a PhD in Shakespeare in the shadow of the\nBrexit vote. Moving between nations that have failed to reckon with their ongoing roles in\ncolonialism\, she grapples with what it means to remain or leave her own home as a Mohegan\,\nbut discovers comfort in mirroring the footsteps of her ancestors who traveled to England in the\n1700s. \n“Madeline’s story is uniquely personal\, but universally relatable. Following the completion of\nthe original tour with Madeline at the center\,” says Brian Boruta\, Umbrella Stage Producing\nArtistic Director\, “we wanted to explore how the play could evolve\, be adapted for other\nperformers\, and reveal a continuing relevance for future productions and new audiences. SUMMARY:Ways of My Ancestors – Imagery: Lighting the Path to Awareness
DESCRIPTION:“Ways of My Ancestors – Imagery: Lighting the Path to Awareness” features photographic work by Scott Strong Hawk Foster that celebrates the rich\, diverse\, and resilient cultures of the Native Peoples of the Northeastern Woodlands of North America. \nFoster is a Native American photographer and an enrolled member of Hassanamisco Nipmuc Band with proud Mohegan and Cherokee lineage. His work has been exhibited at the Danforth Museum\, Worcester Art Museum\, Boston City Hall\, and other venues. \nOn view through March 23 in The Umbrella’s Wedge Gallery\, this exhibition reflects Foster’s travels within his home state of Massachusetts and throughout the ancestral homelands of the Native American Peoples of New England.  While attending powwows\, cultural events\, workshops\, and Indigenous practices that span millennia\, his passion has become highlighting cultures and history of the Indigenous peoples that are still here and living amongst us. \nBoth the opening reception March 5\, 6PM and Artist Talk\, March 9\, 1-2PM are free and open to the public. \nThe exhibition runs concurrently with The Umbrella Stage Company’s Where We Belong by Mohegan playwright Madeline Sayet in The Umbrella’s Black Box theater. As a performer\nshe was nominated for a Jeff Award for best Solo Performance for her run of Where We Belong\nat The Goodman Theatre.\nABOUT TARA MOSES\nTara Moses is a director\, multi award-winning playwright\, co-Founder of Groundwater Arts\, and\na citizen of the Seminole Nation of Oklahoma.\nAs a director\, her work has been seen in Santa Fe\, NM; Kansas City\, MO; Boston\, MA; San\nFrancisco\, CA; Kyle\, SD; Vermillion\, SD; Providence\, RI; Seattle\, WA; New York\, NY; Tulsa\, OK;\nWashington\, D.C.; Bethesda\, MD; Oklahoma City\, OK; Palmetto\, GA; Edmond\, OK; and Hartford\,\nCT. Also a prolific playwright\, her plays have been produced and/or developed with Company\nOne Theatre (Boston\, MA); Alter Theatre Ensemble (San Rafael\, CA); Kitchen Dog Theater\n(Dallas\, TX); Geva Theatre Center (Rochester\, RI); Oregon Shakespeare Festival (Ashland\, OR);\nAmerican Indian Community House (New York\, NY); Safe Harbors Indigenous Collective (New\nYork\, NY); among many others nationwide.\nShe is an associate member of the Stage Directors and Choreographers Society; and Dramatists\nGuild member. She holds an MFA in Directing from Brown/Trinity Rep and a BA in Theatre from\nthe University of Tulsa.\nABOUT GIGI BUDDIE\nAs an artivist\, GiGi Buddie’s (she/her) (Tongva and Mescalero Apache) professional and personal\npursuits converge at the intersection of art and climate justice. In 2021\, she helped to bring\nfrontline climate stories to Glasgow at the United Nations Climate Summit. Her debut single\n“Ursa Major\,” a love letter to the Iroquois story of the Celestial Bear\, is available on all platforms.\nAs an actor\, singer\, songwriter\, and activist\, she creates and contributes to stories of creation\,\nresilience\, and beauty from frontline communities. GiGi received a B.A. from Pomona College in\nTheatre Performance and Environmental Analysis.
