SUMMARY:Whorl: Vertical Gallery Activation by Debra Fleury
DESCRIPTION:Whorl: Vertical Gallery Activation by Debra Fleury\nSeptember 23\, 2026 – February 26\, 2027 \nOpening Reception: Tuesday\, October 6\, 6 – 8 PM (RSVP appreciated)\nDrop-in Drawing Activity: during Free Family Day\, Saturday\, October 10\, 2 – 4 PM (registration appreciated) \nOur inaugural Vertical Gallery Activation features a multi-media installation from Massachusetts artist Debra Fleury. Influenced by the human experience\, Fleury’s work seeks to encourage exploration and evoke a sense of joy and wonder. \nTranslucent fabric has been painted in a watercolor effect and sewn together\, creating channels and undulating patterns that are then filled with wire. Through this process\, “a hidden internal world is made visible\, giving shape to what is deeply felt but not easily named.” The work’s suggestion of structure and mercurial nature constantly transforms the piece\, allowing for a range of viewing experiences. Fleury’s installation evokes a sense of curiosity in the viewer as they explore and experience the energy and evolution of her work in real time. \nThe Umbrella Arts Galleries are free and open to all.

SUMMARY:Menjunje/Amalgamation: An Exploration of Language and Identity by Shelly “Lola” Freund
DESCRIPTION:Menjunje/Amalgamation: An Exploration of Language and Identity by Shelly “Lola” Freund \nSeptember 23 – November 16\, 2026 in the Wedge Gallery \n  \nOpening Reception: Tuesday\, October 6\, 6 – 8 PM (RSVP appreciated) \nDrop-in Fingerpainting Activity: during Free Family Day\, Saturday\, October 10\, 2 – 4 PM (registration appreciated) \nArtist Talk: Friday\, October 23\, 5 – 6 PM – Artist Talk (RSVP appreciated) \n  \nArtist Shelly “Lola” Freund utilizes brightly colored renditions of her own fingerprints and objects reminiscent of family keepsakes to reflect on her multicultural identity. By using her own body as the subject of her work\, Freund asks us to consider how identity is categorized and interpreted in our modern world.   \n  \nFreund’s sweeping canvases feature vibrant pinks and blues that shimmer with the additions of rhinestones\, glitter\, and copper. As light bounces from one canvas to the next\, the viewer is taken on a journey through the artist’s own diasporic origins. Whorls of string create pathways\, as she weaves between English\, Spanish\, and Hebrew\, reflected amongst the titles. \n  \nFreund’s painted geographies ask us to engage with questions of multiculturalism\, social tensions\, and attempt to identify the line between assimilation and acculturation. \n  \nThe Umbrella Arts Galleries are free and open to all.

SUMMARY:Disperse: Art Ramble by Helen Duncan
DESCRIPTION:This year’s Art Ramble features work by multi-media artist Helen Duncan. Duncan’s porcelain clay and wire forms are dispersed along the Fairyland Pond Trail in the Hapgood Wright Town Forest\, right off of Concord Center. Duncan’s delicate dandelion-esque pieces come alive on the trail\, responding to their environment by shifting with the breeze and reflecting sunlight. Through these exchanges\, as well as our own impact on the work\, we are asked to examine how the varied elements of the world around us may interact with each other. \nThrough her outdoor installation\, Duncan aims to create a space that “encourages reflection and awareness of the delicate balances that shape both the natural world and our own lived experiences\,” inviting viewers to slow down\, look\, and take notice. \nThe Umbrella Arts Galleries are free and open to all. \nOpening Reception: Tuesday\, October 6\, 6:00 – 8:00 PM (RSVP appreciated) \nArtist Walks (RSVP appreciated): \n\nSaturday\, October 10\, 2:00 – 4:00 PM (every 30 minutes) with Free Family Day\n\n\nTuesday\, October 13\, 9:00 – 10:00 AM\nThursday\, November 5\, 3:00 – 4:00 PM

SUMMARY:Spirits of the Old Manse: A Candlelit Encounter with the Past
DESCRIPTION:Step inside the Old Manse after dark for a rare\, intimate experience through the rooms where history was lived – and still lingers. \nThis is not a haunted house. This is something older\, quieter\, and more unsettling. Guided by candlelight\, you’ll move room by room through the 18th-century home once occupied by Revolutionaries\, philosophers\, and writers such as Ralph Waldo Emerson and Nathaniel and Sophia Hawthorne. Along the way\, you’ll hear true stories pulled from letters\, journals\, and the etched words left behind – literally – on the windows and walls. \nYou’ll sit where Emerson and Hawthorne wrote. See the view where the family watched the battle of the North Bridge. Stand in the attic where ministers practiced sermons and scratched their names into the beams. \nThis is a fully guided\, story-driven experience designed to bring out the emotional resonance and layered past of the house – not just what happened here\, but how it felt. \nSpace is limited. Flashlights provided. This experience is best suited for guests 10 and up.\nPlease arrive at your designated time slot. Late entry may not be accommodated. \nThis tour involves going up several flights of steep stairs and is not wheelchair accessible. This tour may at times be conducted in low light situations; flashlights are provided. There are no public restrooms on site. Restrooms are located nearby in Concord’s Visitor’s Center. Parking is available in front of the museum in The Old Manse parking lot. \nCancellation Policy: In the event The Trustees cancels a program due to severe weather\, low enrollment\, or other circumstances\, we will notify registrants by email and issue a full refund or transfer to another scheduled program within two weeks of the cancellation. To cancel a reservation\, please contact The Old Manse 7 days prior to the start of the program to receive a full refund. Refunds and transfers will not be granted for cancellations placed fewer than 7 days before the start of the program.   \nQuestions?
