SUMMARY:Open Books: Linocut Bookplate Workshop
DESCRIPTION:190 years ago\, while sitting in the upstairs study of the Old Manse\, Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote in Nature that “the world shall be to us an open book.” His words set the stage for many literary greats who lived and visited at the Old Manse\, and who took inspiration from the landscape surrounding it. \nJoin us for a special linocut workshop under the tent and celebrate the intersections of literature and the natural world by creating your own bespoke bookplate to adorn your ever-growing library! Bookplates\, labels used to identify the owner of a particular book\, became popular in the nineteenth century and often featured elaborate\, personalized illustrations along with the owner’s name. We’ll take some time to draw inspiration from the grounds and gardens of the Old Manse before creating and printing our own unique designs! \nThis activity involves sharp carving tools and is recommended for those aged 12 and up. Pre-Registration for this program is required. Ticket cost covers all materials needed for the activity. \nCancellation Policy: In the event The Trustees cancels a program due to severe weather\, low enrollment\, or other circumstances\, we will notify registrants by email and issue a full refund or transfer to another scheduled program within two weeks of the cancellation. To cancel a reservation\, please contact the Old Manse 7 days prior to the start of the program to receive a full refund. Refunds and transfers will not be granted for cancellations placed fewer than 7 days before the start of the program.

SUMMARY:The Westerners: Mythmaking and Belonging on the American Frontier
DESCRIPTION:Join the Concord Museum for an evening with Megan Kate Nelson as she explores the captivating lives of women and men moving through the American West—Indigenous peoples\, Black Americans\, Mexican Americans\, and Canadian and Asian immigrants—in the nineteenth century. Her new book\, The Westerners\, tracks the attempts of many Americans to remove these individuals from history\, through a frontier myth that lionized individualism and conquest and celebrated white settlers traveling west in search of prosperity.

SUMMARY:Whorl: Vertical Gallery Activation by Debra Fleury
DESCRIPTION:Whorl: Vertical Gallery Activation by Debra Fleury\nSeptember 23\, 2026 – February 26\, 2027 \nOpening Reception: Tuesday\, October 6\, 6 – 8 PM (RSVP appreciated)\nDrop-in Drawing Activity: during Free Family Day\, Saturday\, October 10\, 2 – 4 PM (registration appreciated) \nOur inaugural Vertical Gallery Activation features a multi-media installation from Massachusetts artist Debra Fleury. Influenced by the human experience\, Fleury’s work seeks to encourage exploration and evoke a sense of joy and wonder. \nTranslucent fabric has been painted in a watercolor effect and sewn together\, creating channels and undulating patterns that are then filled with wire. Through this process\, “a hidden internal world is made visible\, giving shape to what is deeply felt but not easily named.” The work’s suggestion of structure and mercurial nature constantly transforms the piece\, allowing for a range of viewing experiences. Fleury’s installation evokes a sense of curiosity in the viewer as they explore and experience the energy and evolution of her work in real time. \nThe Umbrella Arts Galleries are free and open to all.

SUMMARY:Menjunje/Amalgamation: An Exploration of Language and Identity by Shelly “Lola” Freund
DESCRIPTION:Menjunje/Amalgamation: An Exploration of Language and Identity by Shelly “Lola” Freund \nSeptember 23 – November 16\, 2026 in the Wedge Gallery \n  \nOpening Reception: Tuesday\, October 6\, 6 – 8 PM (RSVP appreciated) \nDrop-in Fingerpainting Activity: during Free Family Day\, Saturday\, October 10\, 2 – 4 PM (registration appreciated) \nArtist Talk: Friday\, October 23\, 5 – 6 PM – Artist Talk (RSVP appreciated) \n  \nArtist Shelly “Lola” Freund utilizes brightly colored renditions of her own fingerprints and objects reminiscent of family keepsakes to reflect on her multicultural identity. By using her own body as the subject of her work\, Freund asks us to consider how identity is categorized and interpreted in our modern world.   \n  \nFreund’s sweeping canvases feature vibrant pinks and blues that shimmer with the additions of rhinestones\, glitter\, and copper. As light bounces from one canvas to the next\, the viewer is taken on a journey through the artist’s own diasporic origins. Whorls of string create pathways\, as she weaves between English\, Spanish\, and Hebrew\, reflected amongst the titles. \n  \nFreund’s painted geographies ask us to engage with questions of multiculturalism\, social tensions\, and attempt to identify the line between assimilation and acculturation. \n  \nThe Umbrella Arts Galleries are free and open to all.

SUMMARY:Native American Jewelry Show & Sale
DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with their 15th anniversary\, Artisans Way in Concord Center will be hosting Diane Whitman of Sandia East over the weekend of Sept 26-27 for a show and sale of Native American Jewelry and Craft. Through her more than 35 years in the Native American jewelry business\, Whitman has established relationships with artisans from various tribes and pueblos in New Mexico. She travels to the Southwest several times a year to hand-select hundreds of pieces of jewelry\, accessories\, and pottery and has been the exclusive source of Native American craft for Artisans Way since their opening in Concord in 2011. \nOn Saturday\, September 26 and Sunday\, September 27\, Whitman will be displaying solid sterling silver jewelry pieces (bracelets\, earrings\, pendants\, rings\, etc.) made in the tradition of the Navajo Nation as well as beaded necklaces designed by the natives of the Santo Domingo Pueblo. In addition\, there will be silver pieces incorporating set stones and inlays created by Zuni tribe members and a broad collection of their hand-carved animal fetishes (small stone figures\, said to house a spirit which can give assistance to the owner that have been used by southwestern Native Americans since prehistoric times.) Examples of both traditional and contemporary styles are sure to appeal to all appreciators of Native American crafted jewelry. \nAlongside jewelry and fetishes\, Whitman will also be featuring a collection of individually selected ceramic pieces created by both Navajo and Acoma Pueblo tribe members.  The ceramic artists employ a variety of techniques\, including etching and coloring on traditional “horsehair” and black-and-white pottery. \nArtisans Way is both honored and excited to be representing and promoting the exceptional work of the Native American people. A collection this extensive\, of unmatched quality and variety\, is rarely found outside of Native American territory. The public is invited to this free event from 10am – 6pm on Saturday and 12pm – 5pm on Sunday. During the show\, all Native American jewelry and craft purchases will be discounted 10%.  For additional information or details\, please call (978) 369-4400 or go to www.artisansway.net/events.
